A Day in the Life!

Last Thursday I decided to document my day for another Day in the Life post!

(You can see a Day in the Life post from last May here and a Day in the Life video from January here.)

These days my alarm goes off at 6am which gives me roughly an hour and a half to eat breakfast, shower and get ready before I have to leave the house.

My current tools of the trade:

20150429_070448

My hair is fairly straight on its own but it’s also really limp so I am big on the volumizing and texturizing sprays. Truthfully, these items give me about 2 hours of volume and then my hair is flat again… argh If you have any suggestions for better volumizing products let me know!

I leave the house around 7:15 – 7:25 each morning and settle in for a one-and-a-half to two hour commute into work.

This commute situation is only temporary – thank goodness!

My company’s main office is currently under construction while they work on a build out, so for the time being I’m working from our other office which is quite far south. It also requires me to drive through some heavily congested parts of Miami where I just sit with my foot on the break for VERY long periods of time #annoying.

On Thursday I got a bit of a break though as I needed to be at a client’s office near my house first thing in the morning. This meant avoiding early morning rush hour traffic in Miami! Whoo!

20150430_094958

Since my team members joining me for the meeting were coming from Miami I arrived early and got to sip some coffee in the lobby before they arrived.

20150430_095802

The meeting lasted quite long and I didn’t arrive down at the Miami office until 1pm! I park in a garage that’s about 2 blocks from the actual office so I walk a bit to get there.

20150427_090441

As long as it’s not raining out or super humid the walk is kind of nice. On mornings that it rains out I valet because … walking in the rain is for the birds!

My temporary desk is in the middle of an open room which is a bit annoying because it can get noisy and people are always walking by which is distracting. I’m also sitting in this cheap-o $20 Ikea chair instead of my super comfortable orthopedic chair which is back at the main office.

20150430_184213

Can you tell I’m looking forward to being back in our normal building?! I’m so looking forward to it! I miss my desk, my comfy chair, my parking spot and my much shorter commute!

(But I am grateful to have a job and all of that – I really should complain less! I’m working on it!!!)

The bonus of being at this office is that the building has some premium views. The conference room provides a great overlook of the city:

20150501_135933

And the break room has a nice view of the water:

20150430_184317

I am also enjoying meeting new colleagues and learning about their skills and experiences. They will eventually be joining me up at the main office once the build out is complete.

Lately I have been leaving work at 7 and 7:30pm – mostly because I’m busy – but also because it allows me to miss the majority of rush hour traffic on the way home. That means I don’t get home until 8pm or later which sucks … but I’m dealing with it. (That’s why I’ve been blogging less!)

Last Thursday after a long day at the office I came home to watch the start of the NFL Draft with Adam (go Dolphins!) and then we headed out to the 10:45pm showing of The Avengers.

20150430_223512

Why I agreed to this late night showing of the movie is beyond me! I would say 15 minutes after the lights dimmed and the movie started I was asleep. ZzzzzZzzzzzZz!!!

Oops!

We got home around 1:15am and I rolled right into bed to catch a few more hours of sleep…

Noticeably missing from this post was a  run, and that’s because I didn’t run at all last week. My left hip felt twingy and I wanted to make sure the bursitis went away completely before I jumped back into training.

I am back as of this week! WHOOOO! Could. Not. Be. Happier!

Do you have a long commute into work?

Any suggestions for amazing volumizing and texturizing hair products? 🙂

PS: If you ran the virtual race for PAWS here’s an update: I called the race medal company yesterday and COMPLAINED FOR 10 MINUTES straight about not having our medals yet. They assured me they will ship … within the next 5 days. Probably. UGH. I’m so sorry about the wait!!!!

Such a fun post — love to “follow people around” to see what their day is like. You are right–you have some amazing views. Will be nice to be back to the norm, however! That commute would kill me. I work remotely 3x per week so have no commute. The other days I drive to Fort Collins which takes about 20 minutes each way. As for hair volume, I am in the same boat. When I get ready my hair looks “big” but then if I see a picture of myself, it is just so flat against my head. Good thing I don’t live in TX where big hair rules.

So happy to hear you are back to running! Can’t wait to hear about how that is going.

That’s so nice that you get to work from home three days a week. Adam works from home 3-4 days a week as well and loves not having to put mileage on his car! I sometimes get a bit jealous when I arrive home and he’s still in his pajama pants! haha

The Oscar Blandi texturizing spray works wonders for my hair and gives it a pretty long lasting lift, but I’m trying to find a cheaper alternative to use for “normal days” so I can save the Blandi spray for the days that I have to look sharp.

My commute us an hour each way. A little part of me dies everytime I get in the car.

For hair volume, I like root pumping Products. My two favorites are Redden and Big Sexy. They come in cans and are foamy.

Ohhh I am sorry that your commute is an hour each way. My commute when I’m headed to our main office is 45 mins each way so I definitely understand!

I just got myself a bottle of the Big Sexy root pumping spray today – I’m looking forward to trying it out!

Ugh traffic and long commutes are the worst! Im sure you are looking forward to being back in your regular office. I don’t think I could handle getting home at 8pm- by then I like to be relaxing and thinking about getting ready for bed!

It is not ideal, that’s for sure! The other night I didn’t get home from my run until 9pm … and then I ate dinner. It’s too hard to get in a quality run that late because I’m literally running on fumes. I need to figure out a better schedule for the next month or so!

I love day in the life posts! I like to know that you park in a garage and walk 2 blocks to your office! Why do I like knowing this? I do not know.

My mouth DROPPED when you said how long your commute was and instantly realized why you weren’t blogging as much! I am glad it is only temporary.

My commute is about 17 minutes. Not bad at all. I like that I do NOT live in the district I teach in. I do not want to be out and about and hear, “Mrs. Coooooney!!!!!” Kids, don’t talk to me.

      That commute time is awesome!!

Haha that’s too funny about the kids. I remember when I taught a semester of public speaking I felt the same way. When I was at the store I would be constantly on high alert to make sure no students saw me!

That commute sounds awful! My commute is only about 30 minutes each way – but it includes driving for about 10 minutes then taking a bus the rest of the way into town (I’m all about the free parking!).

When my hair was longer, I would blow dry it with my head flipped upside down. Then, while my hair was still warm from the drying and before I flipped my hair back, I would twist it into a top knot until it cooled. This (plus product) really helped create volume at the roots. But Michigan isn’t really known for its humidity, so I’m not sure how much that will help you.

Love your views, but that commute does not sound fun! When we lived in Chicago, my husband had a ten mile commute, and sometimes it’d take him 15 minutes, other times it would take over an hour. Ugh!

The views from the other office are pretty awesome. I sit in a cube far from Windows, pretty much a bomb shelter.

I come into work super early so I miss most traffic. Makes my commute about 30 min, not bad.

No solution for hair, I cut mine super short so I don’t have to worry about it lol.

Oh wow, the commute from Ft Lauderdale to Miami is the worst! I imagine having that nice view does make it a little better, though. My commute is like a 5 minute bike ride, but there are no windows in my lab, so I guess there’s a trade off.

This is such a cool post, I think I’m going to steal this idea!

That commute sounds awful. You are such a trooper – I would just die if I didn’t get out of work until 7:30 and wasn’t in bed until 1:00 AM! I’m so fussy about getting enough sleep.

    LOVE the views!

That is a long commute! I have a long drive too, except I end up back at the same place I started! 1.5 hours round trip to drop off the kids at school, then again in the afternoon again, except track practice breaks it up. I am really into listening to audiobooks lately.
…My hair is the opposite, I am always trying to de-friz!

That commute sounds brutal! No wonder you haven’t been blogging as much!

I don’t know how much I can help with volumizing advice. I have exactly the opposite problem, but I do know that a friend of mine who has very fine and slightly oily hair swears by Lush’s dry shampoo. She keeps it in her work bag and applies a little to her roots on her lunch break and then “fluffs” her hair to distribute it. It seems to work well for her, so maybe it’s worth a try? I know Lush is usually good about giving samples of things.

Oh my gosh what a commute, glad you do not have to do that everyday. A couple of years ago my longest commute was 1.5-2 hours to northwest Baltimore (away from the city) and did that for a couple of years until I was put on a new project (which is 1.5 miles from my apartment)…so a walk commute is under 30 mins 🙂 PS – great hair day (even if it was 2 hours of volume) and shirt!

Ohhh, Kristina that is a long drive 🙁 I am glad it’s not forever, that’s just too many hours of your day being eaten up. I have always been about a 40 minute ride to work away. This last job ( not quite a year yet) is like 10 min. from home, it is seriously life changing.
My hair is super frizzy! I looked mess in FL lol
Your hair looks good in the picture, so what you have is working 🙂

No worries on the medals! I know you’re trying!

Oh my goodness how do you do it!? 2 hours!??? I would be negotiating a hotel room or something. I bet you are so ready to get back to your old office. My drive is about 25 minutes, not bad at all and gives me time to drink some extra coffee and listen to some music to get me going in the morning.

I love Dove volumizing mousse. My hair is really really thin so I have the same issue with it falling flat. Dove products seem to be the only ones that really work for me, unless I want to spend $45 on a salon quality mousse, which I don’t 🙂

  22. Cocomama

Those of us made of sugar MUST NOT walk in the rain. 🙂

Unfortunately I have to drive the kid 5 miles in the opposite direction to school before heading to work which adds 10 street miles to my 12 mile fwy commute. The upside is that on summer break she is my car pool buddy!

I love seeing the Oregon 26.2 sticker on your car!!! I have the opposite problem with my hair products. It is 100% dry where I live in Oregon and I do all that I can to add moisture to my hair and skin! Whenever I travel tropical or humid, it completely throws my hair/skin off! Haha.
