A Different Kind of Post (Hair and Makeup Stuff!)

After being sick for over a week yesterday morning I woke up just wanting to feel pretty.

The last few days I’ve barely brushed my hair let alone styled it. Makeup? Just tapped on a little powder and blush before dashing out the door.

Okay, so actually that routine isn’t so different from what I do when I’m not sick to be honest! My “beauty” routine has always been pretty simple. I blow dry my hair and I go for a really natural makeup look.

Recently I’ve been wanting a bit of a change. It may sound ridiculous but ever since I received my promotion at work I’ve been thinking I should put more effort in when it comes to my hair and makeup. Since most of my girlfriends aren’t super girly, I started watching some beauty videos on YouTube a couple of months ago to get ideas. (I subscribe to Amelia Liana, Essie Button, Hey Claire and Clothes Encounters.)

I recently watched this video from Claire (who’s also asian) where she added a little wave to her straight hair and I decided I wanted to try that too! A VERYYYYY long time ago I permed my hair … it was not a good look. Because my hair is super straight and stubborn I had to get a perm with really tight curls…. I’m shuddering just thinking about what that looked like!

Anyway, Claire’s video showed me how I could (potentially) achieve a nice loose curl so I headed out to Ulta for some new styling products!

I came home with just a few things.

Okay, so not ALL of those things are new, but a lot of them are.

The hairdryer is new (it’s professional grade which means it should dry my hair 50% faster … or so the box says), the diffuser pieces are new, the curling iron is new, the TIGI Catwalk root boost is new, as is the Fructis Curl Construction moose, the Loreal Sleek It cream and the Tresemmé Karatin Smooth oil.

(Claire’s video recommended some higher end styling products but I did a little research to find cheaper alternatives.)

I’ve learned it takes a lot to make stubbornly straight hair a little bit wavy!

… ta da!

It sort of worked!

I think it’s hard to tell how much curl is really there in the pictures since my hair is dark and the lighting isn’t perfect, but there is wave and it held up for a few hours! I don’t know how often I’ll be recreating this look since it took way more effort than I’m willing to put in every morning, but I’m glad to have it in my arsenal for special work days.

I also picked up a few new makeup items while I was out.

I threw out old makeup pots and brushes that needed to go and re-organized my counter top.

I used to be a MAC girl through-and-through but one day I decided I was tired of spending a small fortune on foundation and I went back to drugstore brands. Honestly, I really think Loreal, Rimmel and NYX are just as good!

Those Real Technique brushes are AMAZING. Seriously, I kept hearing all of the YouTube beauty vloggers talk about them and when I tried them out yesterday I was like whoa! I like that they’re really dense.

Anyway, I know this post is quite different from what I normally write about, but I’m pretty excited about all of my new hair and makeup things and I wanted to share!

I’ll be back with some running talk tomorrow because I need to tell you about my June plans and goals!

Do you spend a lot of time on hair and makeup every day? Favorite products/brands? I’m asking for a friend ; )

I love your hair! You did an awesome job. I am definitely a hair/make up girl when I go to work or out for an event. I am currently looking for a good product, though, that will add hold to my hair but not make it crunchy. For make up I love Bourjois foundation, NYX blushes, Revlon eye shadows. I have very few high end cosmetics because I just have found more inexpensive options (a lot of the high end brands actually own the drugstore brands!).

Thanks Susan! I haven’t tried any Bourjois products but I’ve heard such good things about them… and they have such pretty packaging!

I’ve noticed that a lot of high end brands own drugstore brands like Lancome/Loreal right?!

Kristina, you are one of those people that I could read/listen to talk about anything- whether it’s running related or not!

Your curls and waves look very pretty! I love it. I bet it is nice cutting down the time it takes to dry your hair. Investing in a hair dryer that will save you tons of time is worth it, in my opinion!

I am so not into makeup and hair but I do like to look nice and I wear make up every day to work because my skin is not that great. I use a big brush from mary kay I have had for years. It is awesome for blush. I use cover girl liquid foundation and powder. Eyeliner, mascara, and eye shadow is whatever is on sale and may be from Dollar General. Blush is also cover girl. I don’t wear eyeliner, blush, and eye shadow every day.

I just got my haircut and I dyed it myself. It needed it. The girl that cut my hair was shocked at how uneven it was and how badly it needed trimmed because the ends were so split. It’s easy to over all that up when you have curly hair! I feel really fresh now though that it is all evened out with some layers and that I covered up the gray. Now just an eyebrow waxing (last time was Dec- eek!!!) and I will be like a WHOLE NEW WOMAN.

Thank you! 😀 I honestly am too afraid to wear eye shadow out. Since I don’t have a natural crease I have to create one and I’m always worried that I look like a clown when I attempt it! I wear a little eyeliner too just to make my eyes appear a tiny bit wider, but I don’t do it everyday. I have a terrible problem with rubbing my eyes when I get stressed/tired and have ended up with eyeliner all over my eyes and hands at work come 3 or 4 in the afternoon, haha.

Your eyebrows look great! I am too nervous to get my eyebrows done so they are always a mess. I think I could sit through the waxing but I don’t think I could handle the plucking after!

I love your curls! So soft and pretty.
I don’t spend much time on my hair or makeup because it’s not a super big priority to me but I do put on a bit of makeup like concealer, mineral powder, (I love Bare Minerals), mascara, and a little eye liner. For hair, I just use a little gel and a little curl cream when my hair’s wet. Easy peasy!

      Thanks Liz!

I’ve never tried any of the Bare Minerals products but I’ve heard such good things about it. You have such pretty curly hair – you’re so lucky!

I totally understand the straight hair problems!! It takes a massive amount of product to keep my hair “styled” and not fall out within a few hours. So, usually, I blow dry and maybe flat iron. Your curls look great! Favorite make up products by far are things from the Urban Decay line. I also love Stila. So great. Ulta gets a lot of my money….and my best friend is a salon manager so I even get my hair done there!!

    • June 7, 2015 / 11:26 pm

Hi Annette! Have you tried any of the Urban Decay Naked bronzer/highlighter palettes? I’m tempted because they’re so pretty! I tested it in Streak yesterday but wasn’t sure how long it would last esp. since it was already kind of light on my skin.

I’m definitely high-maintenance when it comes to makeup and hair products. I shudder thinking about how much I have spent on beauty products in the past few years. I love the real techniques brushes… they are the best. I have purchased several of their kits when they’re on sale at Ulta. A few tips with curling your hair: I find my hair holds a curl better if it has air dried or had very little heat exposure prior to curling. L’Oreal Elnett hair spray is basically amazing and holds a curl better than anything else. I also find that practice makes perfect and you will get A LOT faster at curling your hair the more you do it.

    • June 7, 2015 / 11:28 pm

Hey Sam! Thanks for the tip! I mostly let my hair air dry on Saturday. I started running out of time so I had to put some low heat on it to speed things up towards the end. I will have to check out the L’Oreal Elnett hair spray! Glad to hear that things should speed up as I get more comfortable with the curling!

The Elnett hair spray is awesome! You should definitely try it. I also love Bumble and bumble Styling Lotion. It really helps my curls last all day (and even the next day a bit), but it is pretty expensive.

I think the waves look great! I should really find a good weekday hair style. I wear mine in a loose bun probably 4 days a week.

I’m a big fan of tarte’s amazonian clay foundations and bb creams. They seem to work well with my oily skin. I also love Benefit’s Hoola bronzer. I swear it helps me look less tired!

I wear a full face of makeup every day, but it looks really natural and takes less than 10 minutes to do. I also curl my hair pretty often, usually with my straightening iron because I can’t work a curler to save my life! I love the FitMe Matte foundation and powder, but prefer the Dream Smooth Mousse (also Maybelline) for my foundation. I love experimenting with lipstick, too!
