A Long Run With a Fast Finish

My long run this weekend was weird but good. It was hot out but thanks to cloud cover it didn’t feel bad at all.

Hot tamale!

Hot tamale at 6pm!

My training plan said to do 8 easy miles and then finish with 2 fast miles. I ended up doing 9 easy miles and 2 fast miles. I’m usually really on top of my stats during a run, but somehow an extra mile snuck in there and I didn’t realize it until I got home and plugged in my Garmin.

(Actually I know how it snuck in there…halfway through the first mile I turned around to go home and use the bathroom and then I restarted my Garmin and forgot about the first mile. Stupid bathroom break.)

My favorite running view.

My favorite running view.

In all honesty, the first 9 miles felt like they flew by so fast. I literally felt like I was only out there for 30 minutes before I needed to gear up for my hard miles! That kind of run is always nice : )

I’ve never done a long run with a fast finish before. It was HARD but I kind of liked it! I missed my goal pace by 10 seconds on the second hard mile, but I’ll get it next time!

After the run this guy climbed into my lap and we spent the rest of the night on the couch. The best way to spend a Saturday night in my opinion.

Sunday Adam and I took his dad out to the movies and to dinner for Father’s Day. Wish I could have seen my dad but I’m glad we got to celebrate with A’s dad!

We saw the X-Men movie which was pretty good. I like most super hero movies because they always end with the good guy beating the bad guy!

Are you a morning runner, or do you like to get out in the evenings?

Last movie you saw at the theater?

PS: I am really proud of the HEAT and their season this year. The Spurs deserved their win last night and I am actually really happy for Tim Duncan. As a basketball fan I have nothing but respect for him. Onward to next year and getting back to the finals for a FIFTH year in a row! (And no, I don’t think LeBron is leaving Miami this summer!)

I like to run in the mornings on the weekends, but on weekdays I get up at 5:30 for work. There is no way I could get up even earlier to get a run done.

    Your kitty is adorable!

Thank you so much, I will pass on the compliment to Cecil! He will be so happy 🙂

I could never get up early enough to run before work either! I hit snooze too many times as it is!

84° and feels like 91°, really?? lol j/k. I love those runs that go so smooth you feel like you were out there half the time you actually were. Even better is when you have goals for new training and you are right on them, great job. Sounds like a great father’s day.

I run in both, depending on Mrs schedule. But I think I prefer the morning. Agree 100% about the heat, so much has been accomplished in such a short time you can’t be upset. Definitely tip my cap to the Spurs, they played great.

I know, my weather is cold compared to AZ! haha

But we did have crazy humidity to deal with!!!

Hey Kristina! I found you on Hanna’s blog and I’m glad I did. I’m running my first full in October and I’m freaking out already! I’m looking forward to following along on your marathon journey!

    • June 16, 2014 / 10:12 pm

Hi Courtney!!! I can’t wait to follow along with you as well 🙂 I’m so excited about running a marathon this fall! I probably should be more nervous but I can’t wait!!!

Congrats on a great run in the heat no less! I hate it when it’s hot out but most of the time I run after work so it can be pretty hot during the summer. I would normally run in the morning on the weekends.

Thank you, Kris! I always run after work too when it’s extra hot. Aside from being really thirsty by the end of even a short run I don’t mind it *too* much. You kind of get used to it after a while, right? 🙂

As you know, I am a morning runner during the school year and in the summer, I’m a “whenever I get out of bed, drink my coffee, eat my breakfast, and get done screwing around on the computer for an hour” runner. Today I did plyos outside and it was sooooooooooooooooo hot. But I was working on my sports bra tan so I sucked it up.

    I’m a morning runner!!
    Great job on the 9 + 2 fast miles – that’s awesome!!!
I can’t even remember the last movie I saw in the theater – it’s been awhile!

    • June 16, 2014 / 10:16 pm

      Thank you 🙂

We rarely go to the movies too. It’s expensive and the only theater near us is REALLY old and musty. We had to drive about 30 mins to the “nice” theater to see X Men haha

Awesome work on your run Kristina! Great way to recover afterwards too, with Cecil’s help. 🙂

I am definitely a morning runner, although I do go for occasional evening/night time runs when I’ve chosen to sleep in instead, haha…

Ahh, I hear you re: the heat and humidity. It is already stinking hot/humid here and its only half 4 in the morning at the moment!

    🙂

Cecil really knows how to kick back and relax. It’s easy to follow his lead 🙂

I cannot imagine getting up to go running at 4AM! I did that I think maybe two or three times last year and decided it just wasn’t worth it, haha

Great job on your run. Only runners “forget” about that extra mile they did…:)
I am a morning runner–but not an early morning runner. During school I am a “get everyone breakfast-ready for school-pack lunches-drive them 40 minutes to school” then come home and go for a run runner. In the summer, I am a get up, procrastinate, then go for a run runner…

    • June 16, 2014 / 10:19 pm

I couldn’t believe i had forgotten about the first mile … my legs are usually too tired by the end to let something like that happen 🙂

40 minutes to school???? Wow! That’s a long drive! You must be so happy that it’s summer!

way to kill your long run! throwing in fast miles at the end is so hard…and you did it even with an extra mile as warmup. incredible.

i’m an anytime runner. whenever i can lace up my shoes and get out the door.

    • June 16, 2014 / 10:20 pm

Thank you! I am in awe of when you head out in the daytime with the stroller! That’s so hardcore!

I’ll bet FL is starting to feel pretty soupy huh? 🙂 I took my kids to see Maleficent. Hated it, but you do what you gotta do for your kids. 🙂 I’m a morning person, but a night run feels good if I’ve had caffeine late. I’m waiting for it to cool down to a nice 95 degrees tonight so I can fit in my run. LOL. Found you at Hungry Runner Girl, glad to ‘meet’ you.

    • June 16, 2014 / 10:24 pm

Hi Jessica! 🙂 Waiting for it to cool down to 95 degrees?!?!!? Crazy! Way to get out there!

  11. June 16, 2014 / 11:44 pm

What an amazing run! Great job!! You are totally killing it this summer Kristina!

I like to run in the morning when I’m doing a long run, but in the evening if my run is shorter.

When nine miles (plus two) go by “easily” you know you’ve had a good run. You sure get to run in a beautiful area. I am a morning runner myself. My energy level tends to decline as the day goes on. My husband and I saw THREE (that is not a type) movies this past weekend. The weather was not good at all and there are so many good movies out right now. We saw Maleficent (obsessed with Disney), X-men, and 22 Jump Street. It was a good variety.

  13. June 17, 2014 / 8:55 pm

I am having runners envy right now! LOL I need a great long run. That’s awesome you pushed out two fast miles 🙂 That’s pretty darn to have a great run in. We saw 22 Jump Street – the bromance in made me laugh, it was over the top lol
