A Quick Marathon Training Update

You know that blog post I published yesterday saying I was on a plane back to Fort Lauderdale from Vegas? That was a lie.

I ended up contending with 2 delayed flights and 1 cancelled flight before finally get rebooked on a redeye that brought me home at 10AM this morning. FUN FUN FUN!

I still haven’t gone through most of my pictures from the trip (and honestly, right now I don’t even want to THINK about Vegas), so I thought I’d post a quick update on marathon training instead of a vacation recap.

Week 1 of Marathon Training

Week one started off great:

  • Got in a solid speedwork night even in “feels like 96*” temps
  • Finished my first ever 14 mile run!!!
  • Overall weekly pace was faster than it’s been since early spring when the weather was cooler – this is giving me confidence for a decent time this fall!

The only negative was that I missed two of my runs while I was in Vegas.

I purposely scheduled my long run before I left for vacation knowing that missing runs would be a possibility with our packed schedule.

I only missed two short runs though, so I’m not overly worried. I got in the most important ones before I left plus we did a ton of walking which has to count for something!

Week 2 of Marathon Training

I’m currently in week 2!

This week got off to a bad start considering I spent literally ALL DAY yesterday at the airport with 0 miles run (and very little activity in general).

I’m home now though and back on track.

I’m feeling a bit sleep deprived after my redeye flight, but I fully intend to get in an easy run tonight before crashing.

Do you worry when you miss easy/short runs or only when you miss the big ones (speed runs and long runs)?

Can you recommend an airline that never has delayed/cancelled flights? : )

    Oh No! There is NOTHING worse than missed/delayed/cancelled flights. And red eyes mess you up for at least 3 days. Did you have to take an extra day off work? I’m sorry. But your marathon training sounds awesome so far! Starting out with a big 14-er is always a good way to go!

      Luckily I have an awesome boss who let me work from home today. I got through everything that was on my must-do-today list and then took the best nap ever!

    Sadly, I don’t think there is an airline in the world that doesn’t occasionally have delays and/or cancelled flights – very frustrating!!!
    No, I don’t think the short runs (especially this early in your training) will hurt at all – sometimes it makes the next runs that much better, too!!

      I think Adam is a bad luck charm when it comes to cancelled/delayed flights. His last three work trips have resulted in cancelled flights and then this trip included a cancelled flight!

      I may have to leave him home for the next vacation 😀

      I did find it interesting how many people were willing to just lay down right on the airport floor. Kinda gross if you ask me, haha.

    Must be Vegas, I’ve only dealt with a delayed flight a few times and of course my leaving Vegas was like your situation, we were delayed and got home way late. I wouldn’t worry about shorter runs or speed work, the long run even at a very easy pace is one you should never miss, that’s what everything I read seems to harp on. The long run builds that endurance and you nailed a 14 miler so feel great! The 15th is getting closer and my run buddy is going to log on and try to get us bids for the princess half this Feb. I am getting excited and I hope it happens. I really want to meet you! Do you think that can happen in Feb. if I am in Florida? Have you ever thought about running another Disney event?

      That would be awesome! Are you going to do the glass slipper challenge, or just the half marathon? Maybe I will sign up to do the 10K next year for the Princess Half weekend so we can meet up!

      I am planning to do the Expedition Everest Challenge next year with some friends — it’s a 5K with obstacles and a scavenger hunt 🙂

    I wouldn’t worry about those short runs. Especially since it’s not like you started running yesterday. Thems the perks of being a seasoned runner!

    I am sooooo sorry you were stuck in the airport for so long. That happened to us once when we few standby. Kept getting bumped and bumped- buy at least we KNEW that was possible and had discounted tkts because of that. I think airlines should REFUND your money if they delay your travel by a certain number of hours. You know, WE are not allowed to change flights without a fee. Why should they get to????

    Coming back from CO, our flight got delayed because one of the fight attendants didn’t get the required amount of rest time between flights. They said “Due to FAA regulations….” I wanted to scream NO, DUE TO YOUR POOR PLANNING!!! So we were going to miss our connecting flight and be stuck in the airport for 2 extra hours (I know, nothing like 15 hours but at the time I was pissed!) Well, the pilot ended up making time up in the air and we had 20 minutes to get off the plane, hop on a TRAIN to the next gate, and then get on our last flight home. We were running Home Alone style and WE MADE IT!!!!!!!!

      What! That would have made me so mad too!

      I’ve been there with the whole running through the airport thing and it is NO FUN at all. Adam and I had to run through the Atlanta airport which is like the biggest airport in the world or something. It was awful!

      That must have added so much stress to the stress you already have about flying… or maybe it was a good distraction?!

    Way to go week 1! I wouldn’t worry too much since its early in the training cycle. The running group I am in, the coach said they created the schedule with multiple builds knowing people would miss a week here and there b/c of summer vacation.

      That makes sense! I’m glad I didn’t miss my long run, but it’s annoying to miss the short/easy runs since those are the fun ones 😀

    Flight delays are never fun. I hate spending an excessive number of hours in an airport, especially when traveling home. Did you know there is a website where you can look up gyms in/near airports? Whenever I have a super long layover and want to get in a workout, I look to see if there is a gym nearby. The website is airportgyms.com

    I don’t worry too much when I miss a run, however if it is a long run I make sure to get it in within the next couple of days.
