A Relaxing Weekend Leading into the Kickoff of My Next Training Cycle (Starting TODAY)!

I woke up SUPER early (4:30am) on Saturday to take advantage of the cooler temps we’re seeing here in South Florida during the pre-sunrise hours!

Unfortunately about a mile in I went to jump over a little puddle and pulled my hamstring. It was feeling pretty tight but not painful so I debated with myself for a little bit about whether I should cut the run short or not. In the end I decided to walk home.

When I got home I showered and climbed back into bed for a couple more hours (ahhh that felt good). Later in the morning I took care of business stretching and rolling. IMG_0485

Cecil gave me some pointers and then we read through Kim’s blog and Meg’s blog for some additional non-running workout ideas!

IMG_0482Afterwards Adam and I walked to the beach for lunch!

The beach was pretty packed for a day in the middle of October, but the weather is still really warm here in the afternoons.

IMG_0474I hope it cools down a bit soon! Not just because it makes running easier, but also because I love bringing a book and a blanket to the beach when it’s deserted for an afternoon of reading in solitude.

Plus I want to start drinking hot chocolate!!!!

Sunday was filled with football, football and more football as usual! I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Today marks Day 1 of my “I am Going to Get a Big Half Marathon PR This Winter” training cycle!

I feel pretty comfortable saying this because I would have achieved a 12 minute half marathon PR if I had stopped at the halfway point at the Portland Marathon!

After a month of inconsistent running due to vacation, tapering and marathon recovery, I am SO looking forward to getting back into the routine of running six days a week! I love routines!

Congrats to everyone who raced this weekend! I love that fall is here and my Instagram feed is full of smiling faces and shiny new race medals!

How did your (long) run or race go this weekend?!

What is your favorite fall dessert? I’m in a baking mood! : )

Hahaha, at first I read “I went to jump over a little poodle” and I was all “why on earth would she jump over a poodle?! And why was it just stanging there?! Whaat?!” Hahahah, then I re-read it and felt hella stupid xD
Ouch, sorry about the hamstring injury :/ Hopefully it will recover quick.
You’re so lucky to live so close to such a beautiful beach 😀 When is your half marathon?
My long run this weekend went pretty great 😀 Even though the last 10 km was kinda.. not so great, I’m still really proud of it 🙂
Anything with chocolate is a good dessert hahaha 😀

    • October 20, 2014 / 12:49 pm

Hahah I mis-read stuff like that all the time!

My hamstring is already feeling better! I think I just slightly pulled or tweaked it when jumping or landing but after stretching it really good it’s feeling great! 🙂

My next half marathon for fun is Nov 9th but my targeted race day is January 25th!

So glad you had such an awesome long run this weekend! You have such a pretty location to run around with the mountains and beautiful fall leaves. Maybe we could house swap for a weekend? haha

  2. October 20, 2014 / 7:25 am

Pumpkin anything! Did Cecil show his version of Downward-Cat? haha (ok that was pretty corny). So excited for your next training cycle! Fall in FL looks marvelous, I want to go to the beach 🙂

    • October 20, 2014 / 12:50 pm

      Hahaha 🙂

Come visit! You could totally sign up to do the Miami Half again!! #PeerPressure

  3. October 20, 2014 / 8:01 am

I hope your hamstring feels better pronto! I understand wanting to get back to more consistent running. It’s weird, with marathon training it’s SUPER consistent until taper, the race, and then like the week after. It’s like your LIFE revolves around the race for the week before and the week after! You will totally hit that half PR. VERY cool you would have PR’ed in the MARATHON haha.

    • October 20, 2014 / 12:52 pm

Yes! I somehow totally glossed over the fact that I would have hit such a big PR in Portland since I was so focused on the poor second half of the race. It does have me excited about what I can do down here on a nice flat half marathon course!!

I thoroughly enjoyed the decreased mileage for a while, but now I’m ready to get back into the game!

  4. October 20, 2014 / 8:29 am

Hope your calf is feeling better. And you TOTALLY got this pb in the bag. Anyone who wakes up at 4:30 am deserves a pb! Haha. My long run/race went great. I pulled off a pb and I’m happy 🙂

    • October 20, 2014 / 10:53 pm

Haha I agree! 4:30am is just insane. They say you have to get out of your comfort zone to make the magic happen and getting up any time before the sunrises is wayyyyy out of my comfort zone 😀

  5. October 20, 2014 / 9:10 am

Here’s to a new training cycle! Yay!
My long run this weekend was 5 miles. The calf is still bugging me. But 6 more days!
Favorite fall dessert–anything I didn’t have to bake. I did bake gf brownies (from a box, Krusteaz). They were good!
    430! That’s hard core!

    • October 20, 2014 / 10:54 pm

Sorry to hear that the calf is still bothering you, but six more days is a lot of time. I know you’re really taking it easy and hopefully things clear up for race day!

I will have to give the Krusteaz a try, I can’t believe I’ve never used any of their products before!

  6. October 20, 2014 / 9:16 am

Very wise decision to walk home. No sense pushing it during a training run. Had a long run and fun race on Saturday. Both went well except this will be my first AND last Color Dash lol. Mrs schlub started making Apple pie, my goodness it’s my favorite every day desert :).

    • October 20, 2014 / 11:02 pm

Mmmm tell the Mrs to send a piece to Florida! 🙂 That sounds like the perfect post long run treat!

Sorry you two didn’t love the color dash – maybe it could be fun if you bring your kids someday!

  7. October 20, 2014 / 1:09 pm

Six days a week! You go girl 🙂 I had apple crumb cheesecake at the beach, good grief it was delightful lol I like Cecil’s stretching picture 🙂 I seriously have to wonder if I lived in Florida if I would ever get cold enough to drink hot chocolate, it rarely happens here lol

    • October 20, 2014 / 11:04 pm

Haha you would just have to adopt the South Floridian’s definition of hot chocolate drinking weather which is basically anything below room temperature 😉

Apple crumb cheesecake sounds soooo good!

  8. October 20, 2014 / 1:23 pm

Yay, new training cycle! I also love the routine of training for a race. I think the obsessive planner in me just likes to be able to plan my workouts ahead of time, even though I always end up changing them around.
Are you following a specific plan?

      • October 22, 2014 / 5:13 pm

oh, cool. I checked out her page and she looks great! Maybe I’ll ask for some coaching for my birthday…

  9. October 20, 2014 / 2:14 pm

Bummer on the strained hamstring – you were super smart to listen to your body and not keep pushing on. Hope it’s better!!!
Thanks for the link love – you are very sweet!!!!
No long run for me – I rested my sore quad (actually it’s around my knee but when I run my quad gets tight and my leg from my butt to my calf hurts) and tried to run this morning – didn’t go well:(

    • October 20, 2014 / 11:09 pm

Thank YOU for posting your workouts! I would pay for a subscription to your blog just to see them 😀

Sorry to hear that your run didn’t go well today, hope you’re back at it soon!

  10. October 20, 2014 / 4:33 pm

YAY for our new lives of running SHORTER races! Your pics almost make me wish away this cool fall weather in favor of a beach on a summer’s day…almost 🙂

I was totally rooting for y’all against the Bears this weekend. BOO BEARS GO PACK GO!!

    • October 20, 2014 / 11:11 pm

Aaron is on a ROLL! I’m really happy for you/him since he is the love of my life and everything 😉

I’m enjoying our new lives so far! haha

  11. October 20, 2014 / 5:18 pm

Mmm we really HAVE been having some nice weather!! FINALLY! I love winter in Florida!!

I hope your hammy is feeling better. And I’m soo excited for your next training cycle!!

    • October 20, 2014 / 11:12 pm

It could be a LITTLE colder! But I don’t want to sound too greedy! haha

I’m really excited to focus on a goal time! I’ve never really done that before and I feel like it’s adding a whole new exciting dimension to my life! Sad but true 😀

  12. October 20, 2014 / 6:01 pm

My long run was my half race and it was a ton of fun! Hope your hamstring is better and glad you got an extra few hours of sleep after that. Football was awesome yesterday! I missed most of the midday games, but we walked to Mile High to see the tailgate action before the game began. We then came home and were able to follow along and see all of Peyton’s touchdowns. I am still a Steelers girl through and through, but I don’t mind the Broncos. Peyton is a class act 🙂

    • October 20, 2014 / 11:15 pm

It’s so cool that you live so close to the stadium!

I was glued to the TV waiting for Peyton to reach the big goal too! He really does seem like a great guy (although I heard that he cheats on his wife? I hope that’s just a dumb rumor!).

I’m watching the Steelers now and thinking of you! Fingers crossed!

  13. October 20, 2014 / 6:19 pm

Reading on the beach under a blanket is my absolute favorite thing to do. I woke up this morning wishing I had nothing to do because I wanted to go to the beach so bad!

  14. October 20, 2014 / 7:54 pm

Please tell me that Cecil partakes in Kim and Meg’s workouts. That would be awesome. I watched a lot of football this weekend too. My poor Seahawks. What has happened? Sad face. I am exactly like you in that I like a routine when it comes to running and working out. I’m so glad that I signed up for another and get to start training again. I love baking pumpkin cake cookies, loaded with frosting of course.

    • October 20, 2014 / 11:20 pm

I feel for your Seahawks. How could Russell have such a good game and still lose? It’s just not fair!

I’m glad you signed up for another race too because your training recaps are the best 🙂

  15. October 20, 2014 / 8:16 pm

I am so excited for your HM goal! I bet you will beat your PR by a lot more than 12 minutes if you were able to do that while running a full marathon!

    • October 20, 2014 / 11:26 pm

      I hope so!!!!

I know I was holding back a bit in the marathon plus … all those hills … on a flat course here at home I hope that I can kick butt!

  16. October 20, 2014 / 9:33 pm

Please share with my your running secrets of how you stay injury free! I’m dying over here.

    • October 20, 2014 / 11:29 pm

Aww Amanda, I really wish I had some magic fairy dust I could send you so that you could get back out there running. But in the mean time you are getting somehow even better at yoga! And making delicious looking food!
