I need to be brutally honest and make a confession: I only ran three times while we were on vacation.
All three were easy runs (on the treadmill) that lasted about an hour. One day was a little over an hour, so I guess you could call that my “long run.” Oy. I had planned for a down week knowing that fitting in mileage while on vacation would be a challenge, but I still expected to run almost every day.
I could have fit in runs each day but truthfully I just chose not to. Most days Adam and I were absolutely exhausted when we got back to the cruise ship. I think four nights we were in bed asleep by 9pm which is very unlike us. You know we’re night owls that usually stay up past midnight. Not only that but we were busy walking for several hours each day trekking around Italy.
If I had been in the middle of a training plan I would have forced myself to run, but since I’m just in the middle of the Hanson’s base builder I gave myself the freedom to be flexible. I don’t even know if I would call it lazy since it felt anything but lazy – we really did have very active days.
During our day in Rome and the Vatican City we walked over five miles! (More about that awesome day soon!)
The down week was nice, but now it’s time for me to get back on track. Mondays are a rest or cross training day for me, so I got to ease back in slowly. I woke up yesterday at 2:30am thanks to some serious jet lag, so I hit the gym before work which is something I never do!

I don’t know how you early morning runners do it. By the time I was done with my workout I was absolutely starving. I can’t imagine waking up and then doing speedwork with nothing in my stomach.
Do you wake up early enough to eat before you run? How much earlier do you wake up so that you can eat and digest before hitting the pavement?! Do you not enjoy the comfortable feel of your bed and pillows?! : )

Oh and before I go, I promised Megan and Lisa I would share photos from the brothel we saw in Pompeii! I didn’t get a picture of it, but outside of the brothel was a large, erect penis over the doorway from which the Romans hung a light, how funny is that?

And here is what one of the rooms inside the brothel looked like. Presumably the Romans would place a mattress and pillows atop the stone beds for comfort (otherwise I feel bad for the prostitute’s knees)!
This particular brothel had 20 rooms. I believe our guide said that there were two brothels in Pompeii and even as such the lines were often long. The Romans enjoyed wine, spa days and sex. Can you think of anyone else who also enjoys those things 😉 LOL!
