A Runfession!

I need to be brutally honest and make a confession: I only ran three times while we were on vacation.

All three were easy runs (on the treadmill) that lasted about an hour. One day was a little over an hour, so I guess you could call that my “long run.” Oy. I had planned for a down week knowing that fitting in mileage while on vacation would be a challenge, but I still expected to run almost every day.

could have fit in runs each day but truthfully I just chose not to. Most days Adam and I were absolutely exhausted when we got back to the cruise ship. I think four nights we were in bed asleep by 9pm which is very unlike us. You know we’re night owls that usually stay up past midnight. Not only that but we were busy walking for several hours each day trekking around Italy.

If I had been in the middle of a training plan I would have forced myself to run, but since I’m just in the middle of the Hanson’s base builder I gave myself the freedom to be flexible. I don’t even know if I would call it lazy since it felt anything but lazy – we really did have very active days.

During our day in Rome and the Vatican City we walked over five miles! (More about that awesome day soon!)

The down week was nice, but now it’s time for me to get back on track. Mondays are a rest or cross training day for me, so I got to ease back in slowly. I woke up yesterday at 2:30am thanks to some serious jet lag, so I hit the gym before work which is something I never do!

I don’t know how you early morning runners do it. By the time I was done with my workout I was absolutely starving. I can’t imagine waking up and then doing speedwork with nothing in my stomach.

Do you wake up early enough to eat before you run? How much earlier do you wake up so that you can eat and digest before hitting the pavement?! Do you not enjoy the comfortable feel of your bed and pillows?! : )

Cecil enjoys a good sleep just like I do!

He’s such a little sweet potato ?.

Oh and before I go, I promised Megan and Lisa I would share photos from the brothel we saw in Pompeii! I didn’t get a picture of it, but outside of the brothel was a large, erect penis over the doorway from which the Romans hung a light, how funny is that?

The walls of the brothel were lined with paintings like this one that depicted sexual positions the patrons could choose from:

And here is what one of the rooms inside the brothel looked like. Presumably the Romans would place a mattress and pillows atop the stone beds for comfort (otherwise I feel bad for the prostitute’s knees)!

This particular brothel had 20 rooms. I believe our guide said that there were two brothels in Pompeii and even as such the lines were often long. The Romans enjoyed wine, spa days and sex. Can you think of anyone else who also enjoys those things ?  LOL!

Hope you have a great Tuesday. Talk again soon!

Do you stick to a strict running/workout schedule while on vacation?

I think its good to take a break on vacation, especially with all the walking you did! I wake up about 30 minutes before I run, and usually drink some coffee and if Im doing a harder run I’l eat something like a banana. But I don’t really feel like I need time to digest. And yes, I like the feel of my bed and pillows but its just become such a habit to get up early that I don’t even think about it anymore:)

That’s so interesting that you don’t need time to digest. If I run immediately after eating I always, 100% of the time end up needing a bathroom break within 10 minutes!

Hahah, I guess that is the same with me and running after work. Even when I’m tired it’s just part of the routine!

I am so intrigued by the brothel haha! I love that they just straight up post the pictures. 🙂 I wish you had taken a picture of the penis. I bet I could google image it BUT I will do that when I am home so I’m not on my work computer. 😉

We get exhausted on our vaycays too because we usually do very active things like you and Adam! So I don’t blame you for only running a couple times. You still got in some great time on your feet.

Morning running: YES I LIKE MY PILLOWS!!! lol. I run on an empty stomach in the morning. So I know you’re not supposed to do this but I like going to bed with a full belly. 🙂 When I wake up in the morning, I am not hungry at all. After my run I am hungry though. My belly usually starts to rumble when I am in the shower.

I’m impressed that you ran 3 times on vacation! I would have probably skipped them all, especially just being in the middle of base building.

Morning running: not a fan. I’ll do early runs on the weekends, but it is hard for me to get out of bed for a run before work. I know that I will have time after work so I just end up hitting snooze. Except I actually hauled my ass out of bed at 5am this morning to meet a friend at the track at 6. I ate a very small breakfast as soon as I got up (half serving of Kodiak power pancakes topped with berries, maybe 125 calories total. much smaller than my normal breakfast) and I’m eating a second breakfast right now.

DAMN, a 5am wakeup call to go running! I bet you kicked butt at the track!

I hit snooze even on days that I don’t plan on getting up to run 🙂 Yesterday and today were an anomaly since I got up way before my alarm (stupid jet lag)!

I am terrible at running while on vacation. I usually just tire myself out and can’t find the motivation to go for a run. I also worry about getting lost. I’m not really the best at directions. I totally want to see an old Roman brothel! That sounds super cool. I guess they were a lot more open about sex than we are now. I can’t really see most people wanting to stand in line for a prostitute, allowing everyone to see them there.

As for morning running, which I do in the summer… I have to eat and drink coffee before I go. I usually make coffee the night before and have it on ice in the morning. I eat some oats, wait like 30 min and then I can go. I don’t have too much trouble running after eating, so it has never bothered me before.

Yes! They definitely were a lot more open with sex and their bodies. The concepts of shame/humility/modesty with regard to the human body didn’t really seem to present an issue. From what I understand they were open but they weren’t “crazy” with sex and nudity, apparently the idea that they went really overboard is filtered through a Christian lens.

The brothel we saw was actually quite small. I think you can tell from the picture that the individual rooms were very small. There were 10 rooms on the bottom floor and 10 on the top floor along with a “bathroom” which was just a hole in the ground behind a wall lol.

Welcome back!! Sounds like a great trip and walking around Italy is definitely cross training lol.

Thanks!! Ah, yes, you’re right! I didn’t even think about it as cross training, but all of the walking definitely was since we were always going up and down large groups of steps on steep hills!

  6. May 10, 2016 / 3:59 pm

OMG! If you could see me right now I am viewing the pics with wide eyes and my hand over mouth in disbelief!! That is hilarious, and pretty [cool] [odd] [awesome] that they had such open ideas about all that sex! Still not sure which opinion I have! 😉 Wow. That’s a good heads up if we ever take the kids there!
Early morning running – Nutrigrain bars are my go to. Just enough to give me a bit of energy, and I can run 2 seconds after eating them because they are very stomach-friendly for me! Any run over 5 miles and I eat one first thing in the early AM.
I pretty much told my coach that I will run on my vacation because I enjoy it, but don’t expect anything of structure! I like to relax – and I agree, when you’re sightseeing you’re hardly just being a couch potato!

Hahahaha! I know what you mean, I totally wasn’t expecting to see a brothel at all, let alone the pics and giant penises!

We did have one family in our group with a child that was about 5. Our guide discreetly spoke to the mom before we headed over to the brothel to ask if she wanted to wait that one out, but she didn’t think her daughter would really understand so they came along.

I think not forcing yourself to run is part of vacation. You hiked, you were active, it was good to give your body and mind a break and just do what felt good. And I’m impressed that you did an hour on the treadmill 3x. Usually on vacation I do like…20 minutes on the treadmill at most.

Also the brothel picture is cracking me up. I can just imagine men looking through the menu and considering what they were in the mood for! What if you wanted to change your mind halfway through?!

I am glad you didn’t force the run thing while on vacation! This is a trip of a lifetime and you did the right thing by enjoying it. Sometimes I workout on vacation but sometimes not. When we went to Panama and Costa Rica it was nothing more that hiking, snorkeling, walking around. Normally when we go to Mexico I try for a few days of running but I really don’t beat myself up if it doesn’t happen. This last trip to Half Moon Bay I would have loved to run, but it just didn’t happen so I figured three total rest days would do me good. I hardly ever give myself three days off on a row. LIfe is too short for me to place that much importance on running. I feel much better choosing life experiences over working out.

I wake up at 3:45 am–eat a rather large breakfast and then get out and run by 5 am. I can’t workout on an empty stomach so I have trained my body to eat and go and it works well for me.

I do love my bed and that is why I am in it every night by 7:30 pm and reading and then totally sacked out by 8 pm!!
