Hey there! I hope you had a fun weekend. Adam and I didn’t do much besides watch football on Sunday, but we had a pretty productive Saturday.
We started the morning bright and early at Brooklyn Water Bagel. We loooooove their omelets and their coffee is decent too, although not quite as strong as Starbucks. Then we headed to Best Buy to pick up some new earbuds I ordered on Friday night.
I got the beats X in matte gold. This is my “return to running” gift to myself :). I know I’m still more than a week away from running but I am cleared to walk now so that’s sort of the start to it all isn’t it?
Also I just really needed a new pair if wireless earbuds. A little over a year ago I was gifted earbuds to review on this blog. I used those for a while but then they stopped pairing with my iPhone. Then I bought iPhone AirPods but they’re not really made for being active, and they slip out of my ears when they get sweaty.
I love that the beats come with multiple earbud cover sizes because the standard “one size fits all” never fits my tiny ears. The sound quality is also really good, which is what you would expect from beats I suppose!
I wore then when Adam and I lifted on Saturday night and was very happy with the experience!
I’m outside in the pic because we were deadlifting and we have to deadlift outside. Our home gym is on the second floor of our townhouse and because Adam deadlifts over 400lbs we need really solid flooring. The idea of the ceiling crashing in as he drops the weights after a PR attempt is a nightmare I can’t deal with, haha!
This was just the second time I’ve deadlifted since I got back into lifting heavy-for-me.
Just like with my squats I’m still trying to figure out what my true max is. Back in the day (2013) my max deadlift was 175lbs. However, when I deadlifted on Christmas Eve I thought 105lbs was a struggle.
I think a lot of that had to do with the fact that I was struggling with my form. My body just wasn’t used to the deadlift movement anymore. Saturday night I was able to get the form right during my warmup which helped me lift more.
I ended up doing:
- 10 x 55lbs
- 7 x 105lbs
- 7 x 125lbs
- 6 x 145lbs
Why didn’t I go for seven on the last set? That’s a really good question. I’m so mad at myself for that because I feel sure it would have been tough but I could have done it. Since I was able to get so many reps in at 145lbs I’ll definitely go up in weight next time.
After lifting it was time to make a protein shake. I had a free sample of this 22 Days vanilla powder at Veg Fest last year and really liked it. The aftertaste is there but it’s not terribly strong like some other brands.
I think it’s less noticeable in the chocolate powder but since I make my shakes with mango and pineapple I thought vanilla would combo better.
For a long time I didn’t add protein powder to my smoothies and shakes because I made them with cow’s milk. However, when I was at the doctor the other day he asked if I eat enough protein. He said that two of the most common reasons wounds heal slowly is because the person has diabetes or because the person doesn’t eat enough protein.
At my last physical all of my numbers were regular so IDK if it’s diabetes. It’s possible I could have developed diabetes since then but it’s been less than a year.
However, I did (mostly) cut out dairy last year which means I’m not getting protein from milk or cheese anymore. I’ve also been trying to eat less meat. The more I think about what animals go through to become a meal the less I want to eat meat. I went vegetarian for a year back in 2010-ish but ended up eating meat again. I’m not exactly sure if my goal is to go vegetarian again but I do want to eat less meat.
Anyway this is all to say I’m back to using protein powder. Also I tried this powder the other day and it was HORRIBLE.
It’s so sweet that it’s seriously undrinkable. I took about five sips of my shake before I had to dump it down the drain. I do not recommend unless you like seriously sweet drinks.
For any Cecil fans out there I have to tell you that this cat actually jumped into the shower with the water on. Adam opened the door to walk in and Cecil ran in before him!
Adam shouts, “baby you need to come get the cat, he jumped in the shower and I can’t go in there like this (aka nude) with his claws” LOL! Honestly this cat is so social he always wants to be with us and will even brave the water in the shower :D.
I don’t really like to show close-ups of my scars on the blog because I know it will gross some people out, but you can see one of the scars in the pic above. It’s just a small thin line with some pink skin around it. From what I’ve read the skin around a scar will remain pink for about 6 months before it starts fading into your normal skin color.
I’m at the five month mark now (since the first surgery) so I expect the scars to fade even more over the next few weeks. If you want a close-up DM or email me.
Once I get cleared to run for good I’ll be sure to do a wrap-up style post and I’ll probably include pics in there for my own purposes. I think it will be nice to look back and see the whole process documented… so whenever I’m taking running for granted I have a solid reminder to be grateful for each step!
How as your weekend?
What kind/brand of protein powder do you like best?
Anyone else have beats X? Love/hate them for running?
