Catching Up!

Hey there! I hope you had a fun weekend. Adam and I didn’t do much besides watch football on Sunday, but we had a pretty productive Saturday.

We started the morning bright and early at Brooklyn Water Bagel. We loooooove their omelets and their coffee is decent too, although not quite as strong as Starbucks. Then we headed to Best Buy to pick up some new earbuds I ordered on Friday night.

I got the beats X in matte gold. This is my “return to running” gift to myself :). I know I’m still more than a week away from running but I am cleared to walk now so that’s sort of the start to it all isn’t it?

Also I just really needed a new pair if wireless earbuds. A little over a year ago I was gifted earbuds to review on this blog. I used those for a while but then they stopped pairing with my iPhone. Then I bought iPhone AirPods but they’re not really made for being active, and they slip out of my ears when they get sweaty.

I love that the beats come with multiple earbud cover sizes because the standard “one size fits all” never fits my tiny ears. The sound quality is also really good, which is what you would expect from beats I suppose!

I wore then when Adam and I lifted on Saturday night and was very happy with the experience!

I’m outside in the pic because we were deadlifting and we have to deadlift outside. Our home gym is on the second floor of our townhouse and because Adam deadlifts over 400lbs we need really solid flooring. The idea of the ceiling crashing in as he drops the weights after a PR attempt is a nightmare I can’t deal with, haha!

This was just the second time I’ve deadlifted since I got back into lifting heavy-for-me.

Just like with my squats I’m still trying to figure out what my true max is. Back in the day (2013) my max deadlift was 175lbs. However, when I deadlifted on Christmas Eve I thought 105lbs was a struggle.

I think a lot of that had to do with the fact that I was struggling with my form. My body just wasn’t used to the deadlift movement anymore. Saturday night I was able to get the form right during my warmup which helped me lift more.

I ended up doing:

  • 10 x 55lbs
  • 7 x 105lbs
  • 7 x 125lbs
  • 6 x 145lbs

Why didn’t I go for seven on the last set? That’s a really good question. I’m so mad at myself for that because I feel sure it would have been tough but I could have done it. Since I was able to get so many reps in at 145lbs I’ll definitely go up in weight next time.

After lifting it was time to make a protein shake. I had a free sample of this 22 Days vanilla powder at Veg Fest last year and really liked it. The aftertaste is there but it’s not terribly strong like some other brands.

I think it’s less noticeable in the chocolate powder but since I make my shakes with mango and pineapple I thought vanilla would combo better.

For a long time I didn’t add protein powder to my smoothies and shakes because I made them with cow’s milk. However, when I was at the doctor the other day he asked if I eat enough protein. He said that two of the most common reasons wounds heal slowly is because the person has diabetes or because the person doesn’t eat enough protein.

At my last physical all of my numbers were regular so IDK if it’s diabetes. It’s possible I could have developed diabetes since then but it’s been less than a year.

However, I did (mostly) cut out dairy last year which means I’m not getting protein from milk or cheese anymore. I’ve also been trying to eat less meat. The more I think about what animals go through to become a meal the less I want to eat meat. I went vegetarian for a year back in 2010-ish but ended up eating meat again. I’m not exactly sure if my goal is to go vegetarian again but I do want to eat less meat.

Anyway this is all to say I’m back to using protein powder. Also I tried this powder the other day and it was HORRIBLE.

It’s so sweet that it’s seriously undrinkable. I took about five sips of my shake before I had to dump it down the drain. I do not recommend unless you like seriously sweet drinks.

For any Cecil fans out there I have to tell you that this cat actually jumped into the shower with the water on. Adam opened the door to walk in and Cecil ran in before him!

Adam shouts, “baby you need to come get the cat, he jumped in the shower and I can’t go in there like this (aka nude) with his claws” LOL! Honestly this cat is so social he always wants to be with us and will even brave the water in the shower :D.

I don’t really like to show close-ups of my scars on the blog because I know it will gross some people out, but you can see one of the scars in the pic above. It’s just a small thin line with some pink skin around it. From what I’ve read the skin around a scar will remain pink for about 6 months before it starts fading into your normal skin color.

I’m at the five month mark now (since the first surgery) so I expect the scars to fade even more over the next few weeks. If you want a close-up DM or email me.

Once I get cleared to run for good I’ll be sure to do a wrap-up style post and I’ll probably include pics in there for my own purposes. I think it will be nice to look back and see the whole process documented… so whenever I’m taking running for granted I have a solid reminder to be grateful for each step!

How as your weekend?
What kind/brand of protein powder do you like best?
Anyone else have beats X? Love/hate them for running?

I’ve been using Vega Protein which I don’t even really taste in my smoothies. How are you liking the wireless headphones? I got Aftershokz for Christmas but they were took big and I had to return them. I am still using the cheap ones I got on Amazon but the sound fades in and out alot. It would be great to get a better pair but I really don’t use them that often anyway.

The sound quality is really good and the middle size earbud is perfect for my ears so they stay put which is nice! I bought them on sale over the weekend for only $120 at Best Buy, but I think they are that price normally on Amazon!

I can’t believe those little earbuds stay in your ears. I think my ears are deformed because nothing fits in them except the cheap $7.99 wrap around kind I buy… but the cord freezes so I guess I can only use them when it’s warm out!

Your scar doesn’t look bad at all. My incisions on my knee were like little X’s and the skin was actually bumpy at first, like he overlapped the skin or something when stitching it shut, so I thought I would always have those bumps. Nope. Gone. And you can only see one spot where there was an incision if you look reeeeeally close. It’s amazing how the body eventually heals itself.

Do you have to carry all the deadlift weights downstairs and then back up again or do you have enough that you always have the deadlift weights outside?

Hahah no I hear you, the only earbuds that have ever fit my ears well are Apple earbuds (but not if sweaty I guess), YurBuds and these. All other earbuds are usually too big and hurt my ears!

I wouldn’t have cared too much if the scars were big and ugly but I am happy that they have faded so well. I think they will fade even more to the point that they are barely noticeable. I need to ask Ali though if her scars are hurting now. I think all the numbing stuff has finally wore off, and now that I have feeling back in the area they are pretty sensitive to hard touches.

OMG I wish we had enough weights to keep a set downstairs. I actually said to Adam yesterday my dream is to buy another set of weights and a container so that we can have them down there but right now we carry them up and down the stairs. Adam says “it’s a bonus workout” I’m not sure if I agree 😀

Your scar looks so good! Sometimes, after I’ve just been lounging around so there’s no a lot of blood flow in my legs and my skin is just normal colored (it changes color if I’m sweaty or cold lol), I can’t see my scars AT ALL. It’s actually really weird.

How do you guys get the deadlifting stuff outside? Or is it out there all the time?

That’s great! In some lighting it’s really had to see my scars. Like in my home office the lighting is really yellow and hard to see them!

Ugh, we have to bring the plates downstairs and outside. It’s honestly a workout in itself just dragging them all day and then carrying them back up after. Carrying them back up after is the worst! My dream is to buy another set and keep them in a bin outside, but weights are so expensive and it’s hardly a necessity so we prob wont do that for a while.

    Those headphones are so cool!!

The extremes your doctor gave you, shocked me! how can they say “it’s not enough protein or diabetes?” What? that’s crazy!

Way to you on your lifting!! I’m starting to feel lazy, haven’t done any weights in a while.

Well to be fair the doctor said something along the lines of “the most common reasons for slow wound healing are diabetes and low protein intake, but it could also be a variety of other medical conditions.” I just figure protein intake is something within my control so it makes sense to try to increase that since I think my protein intake is probably low now that I’m off dairy and eating less meat, and it’s a common reason for slow healing. It could just be that it’s slow to heal for some random reason though!

Cecil in the shower is super cute! Elly bolts as soon as I turn the water on. Although, she does sit on the other side of the door waiting for me to get out. She’s such a social cat.

I am vegetarian and mostly vegan. I do not use a protein shake, but I do add black beans to most of my lunches and dinners. I’ve never had issues with protein intake and when I have tracked what I eat, I usually get about what the USDA recommended amount is. I’ve never liked protein powders much.

BTW, your scar looks pretty awesome! I am glad to hear that you are going to be back to running soon.

Wow, I can’t believe it’s been 5 months since your first surgery! The scar looks really good from that pic. Not bad at all!
