I hate to start a post off negatively, but my right hip has turned into a nightmare.
Some days it doesn’t bother me at all, and some days it hurts really bad unless I’m laying down. I’ve been diligently stretching every single day but it doesn’t seem to make a difference. Some days I’m fine and some days I’m not.
I haven’t run since Wednesday.
I had hoped that a few days of uninterrupted rest would heal things up, but I still feel the same. I’m going to take myself to the doctor this week to get a professional assessment.
On one hand I think it’s great that this is happening during a lull in my training. On the other hand I don’t really understand WHY it’s happening now.
I’ve learned that a tight hip is possibly one of the worst things that can happen to you because your hip affects SO many other parts of your body. On the days that my hip feels the worst my IT band is also tight, my achilles is tight, my glutes are tight and even my lower back aches a bit :(.
Hopefully the doctor can refer me to a couple of PT sessions and I can get back on track.
I didn’t do any running this weekend but I did go on a nice walk. Our weather dipped down into the 60s briefly and it felt SO NICE! If only this weather was sticking around!
I also spent some time outside grilling!
I could feel someone’s eyes on me as I was turning the chicken.
Cecil had to supervise and make sure I cooked everything to his liking.
The food may not look like it came from the pages of a cookbook, but it sure tasted GREAT!
^ Grilled chicken with honey BBQ sauce, grilled zucchini and squash, hot dogs and a salad with candied walnuts, craisins and fresh grapes.
I’m really getting the hang of this grilling thing!
If only I could get a handle on whatever it is that’s wrong with my hip I’d be in really good shape.
How was your weekend? Do you like to go for walks or do you think they’re a waste of time? I couldn’t stop thinking about running while I was walking!
Yikes, I’m sorry about your hip. Hopefully the doctor can get to the bottom of things. I pretty much only care about an injury in the context of how it affects my physical activity 🙂 I love walks. They are so refreshing and a great way to stay active when more intense cardio is not an option.
I am so sorry your hip pain hasn’t gone away. I hope the doctor can give you some stretches and exercises to do to get it feeling better! That couch stretch I do really targets the hips. You know, I feel like i have had every running pain known to man but I have never had pain in my hips, I can’t even imagine what that feels like? I don’t mind saying that either because I am not superstitious. But knee shit… dang I have felt it all!
When I took some time off running I walked every day. It started to feel normal and I didn’t miss running as much. Once I worked my way up to walking 3-5 miles, I would be just as tired as when I ran!
Please keep us posted on your hip!

I love the couch stretch. It definitely gives me immediate relief, and some days I am doing it 3-5 times per day just because I NEED it. Other days, like today, I feel perfectly normal and I only did it once just because I want to stay loose if I can. I just don’t understand it!
I thought about you and your 5 mile walks while I was walking! I don’t think I could tolerate walking that far!
So sorry about your hip! I hope you find some relief soon, injuries can be so frustrating.
Oh no! So sorry to hear about your hip. Hopefully your doctor/PT will be able to get you running again soon. Injuries are the worst.
Sorry to hear about your hip! That must be so frustrating. I hope that the doctor can help you figure out what is going on so you can get back to running soon.
Sorry to hear about your hip! I hope your doctor and PT get you feeling better soon. Also, Cicil is pretty awesome sitting there by the window.

He’s my little watch dog! 😉
I am sorry about your hip 🙁 I sympathize about not being able to run. Do you remember when my hip used to burn? I developed a bursa and steroids, prednisone, helped me a lot! I took long stretched usually four or five days off and it helped. Anyway, just a thought.
The food looks yumm!
How far off is your next race?
Author
I definitely remember that!
My next race is a 5-miler on 4/11. I really want to do it, even if just for fun, but we’ll see…. fingers crossed!
Uggghh no not another runner with a faulty hip!! I can relate to so much about this—- some days it feels fine and other days its so painful! Gets worse even with a decrease in training. It seems to be one of those injuries that makes no sense!
I wish I had an answer or suggestion for you but I don’t. I hope that you are on a much faster track to recovery than me!
Author
Yes, it makes absolutely no sense! I have been reading back over some of your older posts for PT ideas.
I’m hoping my doctor can shed some light this week! Fingers crossed!
So sorry about your hip – that is no fun at all!!
Your meal looks amazing – I love grilled chicken and salad!!!
I think your meal looks so yummy! Invite me to dinner anytime 🙂
I have hip issues too. I am in PT to address it and have learned so much about my issues and how to work through them. If you want to email me I can share more about my experience. Might help (?). Glad you will go get an expert opinion.
Author
Thanks Susan! I will definitely shoot you over an email tomorrow. At this point I will take all the advice I can get! 🙂
Ah that stinks about your hip! 🙁 Hopefully you can find some exercises or stretches that will help.
Your food looks awesome though! I am so ready for grilling weather–it is supposed to be 60 here today, so maybe Spring is actually coming? I can hope! 🙂
Author
Ahhhh 60 degrees really is the perfect temp! I love the cool, crispness of air at that temp. Plus, it’s great for running 🙂
Oh no I’m so sorry about your hip! Glad you are going to a doctor, hopefully they can recommend something that can help!
If it’s tightness, do you have a heating pad by chance? I often use my heating pad on my tight areas when stretching/massage don’t help and it works like a charm. Good luck!!!
Author
GREAT IDEA! I’ve been using the ice pack on it sometimes, which actually feels pretty good for a while, but I bet the heating pad would feel better and really help loosen it up much better than cold! Thanks!
Hmm…I wonder why your hip is hurting!! I totally agree that a tight hip really affects everything else. I hope you figure something out for it!
That food looks amazing. I’ve really loved this break in the super hot weather. Florida remembered that spring exists I guess…for awhile it seemed like we’d be shot straight into summer!

I never really thought about how closely linked the hip is to EVERYTHING until this issue cropped up.
As I’m hobbling around I just keep singing to myself, “the hip bone is connected to the everything bone!!!!”
Those pictures of your walk are beautiful! I’m sorry to hear about your hip. The only running injury I’ve ever had was with my hip. It hurt so bad that I couldn’t even sleep on my side at night. I was able to treat it successfully (and pretty quickly) doing Yin Yoga, which is different from regular yoga in that yin yoga targets and strengthens connective tissue, which is important in injury prevention. I continue to do yin yoga (a DVD) once a week and haven’t had another problem with my hip. I’ve posted about it on my blog, but let me know if you want more info.
Author
Yes! A couple of nights my hip has hurt so much that I couldn’t sleep on my side. I have never tried yin yoga but I am going to look that up right now. Thanks Jennifer!
The chicken looks yummy!! ALL food is better after it’s been grilled! I can relate to thinking about running while you’re walking: “I would have been done 15 minutes ago if I’d ran instead of walked”. My mind goes there every single time.
Have you thought about a chiro? I love my chiropractor. He fixes everything!
Author
I’ve never been to a chiro. I’m going to see my doc this week and I think he night refer me to PT. If that doesn’t work out I may need to find a chiro… or a magician or something! 🙂
I hope the doctor has some insight into the situation with your hip. It can be especially frustrating when there doesn’t seem to be a rhyme or reason!
I like the pictures of all of the foliage along the road–it’s nice to see green!
Your grilled food looks great! we put out our patio furniture this weekend–prematurely for sure,as it is currently getting covered with snow…
Author
It’s STILL snowing up there? Wow! I hope it clears up for you soon. It’s almost April!
Oh no! I’m so sorry to hear about your hip! Definitely keep us posted on what your doc says. I never lucked out getting a second opinion on my hip but some rest time with no running helped me.
Your food looks amazing to me!! So sorry to hear about your hip 🙁 hopefully the doctor can get things figured out!
): best of luck with your hip hun.
I love your neighborhood! The pictures you took look like a rainforest – so lush and green! Haha great picture of Cecil supervising! I hope your doctor is able to recommend some good exercises for your hip, sorry to hear its been giving you pain.
Author
It always amazes me that we have these beautiful trees right smack in the middle of a neighborhood! I love it!
Cecil is a very good supervisor. Demanding but he only wants to bring out the best in me 😉
Your food looks awesome but I’m not too happy to hear that your hip is bugging you. 🙁 My hip has been causing me problems recently as well and it also makes my lower back sore. This is the first time I’ve had this issue so I’m kind of working through it with massage and stretching right now. Keep us updated!
Author
The sore back part is such a killer. I think I could deal with the IT band, glutes, etc. but having a sore back really stinks. It really makes me feel for people who have chronic back problems. I hope that you’re feeling better soon!!!! You gotta go crush it at Boston 🙂
Oh no, this is terrible news. Get yourself to the Dr pronto.
Hey that grilling looks amazing, don’t count yourself short.
Keep us updated on the hip.
I am so sorry to hear about your hip pain. What a bummer! Did it slowly start creeping up on you or did you just start feeling a lot of pain one day?
I absolutely love that the grill and patio area is right outside your apartment, of course so Cecil can partake in all the action as well. Has he ever been outside?
There are moments when I love walking and other times when I get to antsy and just want to run. But walking is better than nothing, that’s for sure!
I’m sorry to hear your hip hasn’t been feeling well! Hopefully the doc can give you some good recommendations to get everything back into working order…
You aren’t giving yourself enough credit-that food looks AMAZING! Yummmmm.
