Catching Up!

Happy Monday! Today I thought we could sip some coffee and catch up!

1. WeekendΒ Running:

On Saturday my old nemesis Calf Tightness came back. My doctor couldn’t find anything wrong with me in my blood work, but I think the tightness seems to rear it’s ugly head the day after I eat something salty. On Friday night I ate a chicken dish from a restaurant that was super salty and then Saturday, BAM, there was the tightness.

Sunday the tightness had mostly gone away. My calves were a little tight the first mile but it totally disappeared by mile 2.

I forgot my earbuds on Sunday which was annoying but I survived a music and podcast-less run. Because I didn’t have my earbuds I heard this guy yell to me “SLOW BUT STEADY!” He then raised some sort of drink in a brown paper bag at me.

I am taking his words as a compliment. I am glad that he noticed how steady my pace is :D. To be honest though, he said this during my FAST finish mile lololololol. Oh well!

2. Goodbye Apartment:

This past weekend Adam and I went back to the apartment to patch up the walls and pack up our final belongings.

IMG_1368

We still have the apartment through the end of the month and have some small odds and ends to do. For instance, I need to schedule Good Will to come and take the furniture that we have decided not to keep.

Did you know that Good Will will send a team out to come and take your unwanted furniture for free? I had no idea until my mom did it with all of her furniture when she moved from a house into an apartment. It’s such a win-win. Someone comes and takes our big, heavy furniture away for free, and Good Will gets to make money off of it to help people in need!

3. Home Gym is Underway:

This past weekend Adam and I started on our at-home gym! We lose access to the gym at our apartment on the last day of the month so it’s GO TIME for getting everything set up.

IMG_1389

What I learned this weekend is that gym equipment and weights are excessively expensive! We are thinking about this as an investment though. We have to pay a lot of upfront, but then neither of us have to pay a monthly gym membership.

Our local gym charges $20/mo so that’s $40/mo that we’ll be saving by having an at home gym.

We bought some dumbbells this weekend but we still need to buy:

  • Power cage with pulley
  • Barbell
  • Plates
  • Rack for weights
  • TV (this is obviously super optional, but something we’d like)

Luckily Adam’s dad has a bench that he doesn’t use so he’s going to give it to us. He also has gym floor tiles that we’ll be able to use as well.

We’re going to try and see if we can get anything used on OfferUp and Craigslist before we buy new. We looked this weekend and didn’t see much but we’re hopeful!

4. Beautiful Rainbow:

During my run on Saturday it rained very briefly and then this beautiful rainbow appeared!

(Note: turn your volume down as the wind is kind of loud!)

I see rainbow’s pretty frequently at the beach, but usually they disappear into the sky so you only see a half or quarter rainbow. This one spanned across the whole sky. So beautiful!

5. Awesome Smoothie:

Now that I’m waking up super early and eating breakfast at 5am, I start getting hungry around 9am which is obviously too early for me to take a lunch break. Around 9am is actually when the office is just starting to come to life, which means it’s also a tough time to make a snack and eat in peace.

To keep my hunger at bay I’ve started bringing a smoothie to work as my mid-morning snack. It doesn’t matter if I’m on a call, in a meeting or in the middle of a project, I can always sip my smoothie!

IMG_1349

My current go-to flavor is Very Berry Banana from SkinnyTaste.

To keep the smootie cold, I put my Thermos in the freezer overnight. In the morning I make my smoothie with frozen berries and a frozen banana, and then I pour it into my Thermos.Β A Thermos can keep a drink ice cold for up to 19 hours!

IMG_1350

One day last week I didn’t drink my entire smoothie in the morning. I took a sip around 4pm right before I left the office and it was still as cold as if I had just made it!

It’s probably too cold out for most of you to even think about cold smoothies, but if you live in a warm state like me give it a try! πŸ™‚

Before I go, Cecil and his friends wanted to say hi!

I hope you have a great Monday!

Do you have a home gym? Where did you buy your equipment?
How did your run(s) go this weekend?
Were you able to run in shorts this weekend?

I think we have gotten all of our home gym equipment on Amazon. Only problem is not being able to see the stuff in person (or try it) before you buy it! I think its been months since i had a smoothie…definitely too cold lately! Sometimes I will drink them in the winter but I need to already in warm inside the house.

I have been looking at a few things on Amazon (bosu ball, etc) but weights looked even more expensive online? Probably due to shipping!

We are putting together a home gym at B’s house. We just got a few kettle bells at TJ Maxx. I’m also looking in Craigslist,

NICE! I always forget that stores like TJ Maxx sell workout equipment. I’ll need to go check out my local shops. Thanks for the tip!

I hope you’ll share what the gym looks like when it’s done!!

The smoothie thing is a great idea, especially since you live in a warm climate. I did not know that about Good Will! Do you work today? I have in service and they are using my room for a meeting that doesn’t involve me so I am kicked out. Ugh.

I was wrong – it’s actually Salvation Army that does the free pickup!

I did work yesterday, unfortunately. Adam was off so he and his dad did some work around the house. When I got home they had installed recessed lighting in my office! I’m so happy, now I can film in there!

That’s so annoying that you couldn’t use your room. They should have given you the day off! But at least you didn’t have to teach on a day when you’re still getting over your cold!

Yes a home gym is an initial big investment but totally worth it. I have had mine for 9 years and have a Smith machine, dumbbells, kettlebells, treadmill and rower. You never have to wait for a piece of equipment and it’s always open πŸ™‚

YESSSSS I am very excited that I’ll be able to go at any time since that is what I’m used to! The local gym has pretty good hours for most people 5am to 10pm, but I would need to lift in the morning (prob 4:30am) so that I could still run after work, so their hours weren’t great for me! Although, let’s face it, who knows if I would be able to get up at 4am to workout at 4:30am haha!

Hopefully you’ve found the cause to your calf tightness. We have one of those small bench press/leg curl machines in our garage. We bought it for my step son a couple years back. He uses the gym at the high school now so I’ve been using it couple times a week. You are so right, gym equipment is expensive. The machine came with some weights and the rest I got from family. I would try offer up and Craig’s list also.

I ran in shorts and tank this weekend. We have amazing weather right now. And my race this weekend was AMAZING!!

That’s so awesome that you were able to get things from friends and family! We’re definitely hunting OfferUp and CL, but right now everyone is still sticking to their NY resolutions so no one is selling, haha!

I am loving the smoothie idea πŸ™‚ I had not thought about making my smoothie and taking it with me. I usually get hungry for a snack about 9:30 because I am up early. It would be a healthy option.
I have a set of dumbbells and a push board now all over my living room. I don’t have enough room to get a real home gym going, good thing planet fitness is $10 a month.lol
It is a great investment! You will have it for years πŸ™‚

    1. Kristina

That is awesome that you have a PF nearby! We don’t have any “name brand” gyms in our area. A new PF opened in Fort Lauderdale, but on the opposite side of the city!

I had serious calf tightness last week ( I think the stress caused it). I recovered with cross training, recovery runs, massages, and patience (lost of patience). I’m glad your tightness is gone by now!

That smoothie recipe looks so delicious. I might try it out soon.
By the way, I live in Miami so I did run in shorts yesterday haha!

Do you think stress can cause calf tightness? If so that would totally explain why I’ve had calf tightness since we bought the house LOL!

You will love the smoothie! Following the directions as-is makes it really thick, so if you like a thinner consistency, I would cut back on some of the frozen fruit and add a little bit more liquid!

  8. Hanna @ minimal marathoner

I sometimes wish I could have a home gym! But, being honest, for the amount of money I’d have to sink in I don’t think I’d use it enough. But it is very convenient, especially during our unreliable winters!

I hope your calf tightness stays away! I was on a big smoothie kick a couple of winters (yes, winters) ago and I’m trying to get back into it. I only use greens and fruit in mine, and it’s a great way to get greens in since I don’t eat nearly enough of those.

    1. Kristina

Thanks, Hanna! I have tried greens in my smoothies and it makes me hate the smoothies haha. I would rather eat my greens on their own. Something about the combination of the tangy-ness of spinach/kale combined with the sweetness of fruit just doesn’t do it for me. I am trying to incorporate greens into more of my meals throughout the day though instead of getting to dinner and thinking “okay I need to eat ALL THE VEGGIES because I haven’t eaten any yet today!” haha

  9. Ali @ Hit the Ground Running

I have found that if someone is going to yell at me on the run, if they take the time to say something kind of specific, it seems like rude. “Slow and steady!” sounds like it was meant to be encouraging! Way better than “looking good hot stuff” or a random honk lol!

YES I am pretty sure he meant to be encouraging! His tone was positive/bright and he toasted me with his brown bagged alcoholic beverage, haha! Way better than when a homeless guy shouted that I had nice tits! Like, really?

Cecil is so sweet! Love him! I hope you can finally figure out the calf thing–maybe you are onto something with the salt. We do have a home gym with a bench, free weights, barbells, pull up/dip unit, TRX, a rowing machine and a bike on a trainer (used to have a treadmill but sold that to my PT after I broke up w/ treadmill running). I REALLY want a cable unit. Ugh..so pricey! Which ones have you guys looked at? It’s my goal to get one this year but travel is calling too πŸ™‚

  11. Ana

are you drinking enough water? At least there is nothing wrong with your calves, as far as the doctor is concerned.

We have weights, a kettle bell and some resistance stuff at home… Roger can do any sort of torture… auhm…. I mean work out, with those things. He also has a punching bag, which sometimes he carries around for a work out.

I did ran in shorts!! inside, at the Y! it is too hot in there to run in leggings.

The combination running, eating with workouts is great. I am also trying to adjust my diet. Frequently, I don’t drink a lot of water. So bad!
