Catching Up on Life!

The last few days it seems like life is conspiring against my training aspirations. Monday morning I woke up very excited to get in a run after not running all weekend but then I spoke with Adam.

You may remember that our master bedroom and bathroom are open concept.

(^pls excuse the unmade bed and light switch that is missing a face plate.)

We love the open concept, it was actually a top selling point of the house. However,Β on week days I get up about two hours before Adam does, and what we discovered Monday morning is that when I’m getting ready I make a lot of noise and it wakes him up prematurely.

So, after work on Monday instead of heading down to the beach for a run, we headed to IKEA so that I could buy a desk that could also function as makeup vanity for the office.

We have two other bathrooms beside the master bathroom in the house, but the previous owners weren’t big fans of counter space. The other two bathrooms have ZERO counter space, and instead just have free standing sinks.

We’re going to renovate both bathrooms and add traditional sinks and vanities, but those are projects that are still a couple of weeks out. Until then it was easier just to buy a desk that could be assembled quickly and easily.

The office is one of the things I’m most excited to decorate, but that probably won’t happen until January. First things first, I need to find my monitor. It may have gotten lost in the move… aka I may have lost it so I have an excuse to buy a new, nicer one :).

So the IKEA trip happened Monday after work,Β which means yesterday after work I was chomping at the bit to get out for a run. I left the office suuuuuuuper excited, and then… I sat in traffic for 2.5 hours.

I didn’t get home until 8:35pm and by that time I was too frustrated/hungry/tired to go running. I decided it would be more productive if I just went inside, ate some dinner and did some small work around the house.

I’m trying not to freak out too much about not having run for the last five days. I’m still plenty of weeks out from the race for this to be an issue, I have a good running base and I’m not shooting for a PR.

It’s still hard not to feel a bit crazed about not running. It’s just such a normal part of my daily routine to miss it feels incredibly odd. It’s totally throwing me off!

Now for a couple of totally random bits…

The other day at Target I was looking for some inexpensive but nice face illuminator. Now that I am 30 and also a homeowner I have dark circles under my eyes and other signs of general tiredness written all over my face :).

I found this illuminating palette from Elf which was only like $6 but it’s so pretty! The colors are very pigmented and long lasting. Good job, Elf. (They’re cruelty free too).

And for any Cecil fans out there, the king is doing quite well in his new castle.

He’s not really used to the two story situation yet. Sometimes when Adam and I are upstairs and he’s downstairs (or vice versa) I’ll hear him crying, but I’m sure he’ll get used to it soon. Every day he seems a lot more confident!

I hope that your week has been off to a great start. Cross your fingers for me that I am able to put up a RUNNING POST tomorrow!

Best part of your week so far?
What’s the longest your commute for work has ever taken you?

I have to commute on a major interstate and Thursday and Fridays stink. It would be 45 minutes without traffic but it easily takes me 1.5 hours on those days. My new goal in life is to not have a commute because I spend so much time in the car. And whenever that happens, I’m going to trade my Honda Civic in for a car that is not practical at all πŸ˜‰

I’m excited to see how your house comes along. Offices are so fun to decorate πŸ™‚

Oh wow!!! I wonder why it gets so bad on Thursday and Fridays?

I flippin love your goal of saying goodbye to the commute and getting a non-practical car! πŸ™‚

I’m loving my week so far! PR-ed my Thruster at Crossfit Monday — and today’s my last day before Winter Break!

      WAY TO GO SUSIE!!!!!!

  3. December 14, 2016 / 7:44 am

Poor Cecil thinking he is abandoned when really you are just a floor away. Little kitty is the same way even though we have lived in our condo for almost 2 years. Sometimes she will just cry and cry until I yell down to her to in exasperation “Just come upstairs!” and then she will run upstairs like she knew all along where we were and was just waiting for an invitation. It is one part adorable, one part annoying πŸ™‚

Hahhaa yes, same! As soon as we call to Cecil to come upstairs he runs upstairs. Of course he must know we’re up there, he surely can hear our voices and hear us moving around. I think he’s just lazy and wants to see if we’ll come to him if he cries long enough hahaha. Cats are so funny, I love them!

  4. December 14, 2016 / 9:24 am

Hooray new house! I haven’t run since Saturday and – confession time – I may not run at all until this coming Saturday. Scheduling has gotten in the way of some runs and also, the average temperature this week is like 10 degrees and why deal with that? I mean, if I were in training, sure I’d suck it up…but I’m not…and I’m not running a half until March..soooooo…LOL. I figure I might as well take extra time off while I still can!

    • Kristina
      December 14, 2016 / 10:12 pm

YES!! I second your comment 100%. Enjoy the holidays and all they have to offer! Running will be there for you when training starts up in earnest again! Plus 10 degrees… hell no to running in that. It’s gotta be as bad as running in 90 degrees!

  5. December 14, 2016 / 10:35 am

Wow! you have had a busy week! I say during moving time, there is more priority on unpacking and getting settled.

I love the idea of an open bathroom! it looks so cool!!

    • Kristina
      December 14, 2016 / 10:14 pm

We love it too! It makes both the bathroom and the bedroom feel so much bigger. The only downside is that when you step out of the shower it’s kind of cold since there is no door to trap in the heat/steam! haha

  6. December 14, 2016 / 11:07 am

Awww, I can just imagine your kitty crying from the other floor! It’s like “hey cat, I’m right here! Can’t you hear me?? Just come downstairs!”. So silly! I’m sure Cecil will get used to it soon. Love his new view!
The longest commute I had was 45 mins each way, out into the country. There were no stores/shops/gas stations anywhere along the route! I did get to listen to a ton of audiobooks on my commute, which was nice, but in the winter is was a real drag making that haul. It was almost like auto pilot. I would just zone out when I was driving and next thing I knew I was at work! No traffic jams ever. πŸ™‚

      December 14, 2016 / 10:15 pm

I know exactly what you mean! If I have a great podcast to listen to I can totally go on auto pilot for most of the drive. A good portion at the end is in stop-and-go traffic though which brings me back to reality and is not so fun haha

  7. December 14, 2016 / 12:09 pm

Haha we run into this issue also. I move all my stuff out to the family room before we go to bed and the bedroom is off limits in the morning. No way I’m waking the wife lol. Great solution until the bathrooms are renovated. Don’t worry about the running. You have plenty of time to be grinding through a training plan, enjoy the flexibility you have right now.

      What a good husband!

  8. December 14, 2016 / 1:35 pm

Our master bathroom is the same, however, I get up at the same time as Dave so it doesn’t really make a difference. New houses always have quirks you have to work through. My downstairs bathroom does not have ANY storage or counter space, and I think it is a challenge. We are slowly renovating, so we will get there eventually…

    • Kristina
      December 14, 2016 / 10:17 pm

Oh it’s definitely a challenge! I don’t understand how people live without counter space. If I have counter space available to me I’m going to use it … all. πŸ™‚

  9. December 14, 2016 / 1:55 pm

Very pretty! It is nice having a blank slate to start with and build on πŸ™‚ I need a blank slate lol I have to dig out first lol
I would take over another bathroom and have my own space for sure if I could πŸ™‚
Cecil will get use to it soon! It is freaky to change houses, when I moved all my cats freaked out for a few weeks!

      December 14, 2016 / 10:19 pm

Awwww poor babies! Cecil has always been go-with-the-flow and never had trouble adjusting to new apartments. This is the fourth place that he’s lived with us, but I think because it’s double the size of anywhere we’ve lived before it’s a lot for him to take him. The house must seem so big to a little baby cat! He’s really just a tiny kitten! πŸ™‚

  10. December 14, 2016 / 3:24 pm

I am intrigued as to why you like the open bedroom/bathroom concept. That is a really good idea to just get a desk until your other bathrooms can handle your makeup routine. πŸ˜‰

What a hellish drive home yesterday! So sorry that happened. I would have cried.

Your run tonight is going to be awesome!!!

    • Kristina
      December 14, 2016 / 10:21 pm

My run tonight felt soooooooooo good. Nothing like a random/sudden/drastic taper to make that happen I guess haha!

We love the open bedroom/bathroom concept because it makes both areas feel extra big! Plus it’s pretty trendy down here. All of the fancy houses on south beach do it hahaah.

  11. December 14, 2016 / 4:30 pm

My commute was a big reason I left my job πŸ™

I’ve never seen an open concept like that! Very interesting!

    Cecil has quite the view!!!

    • Kristina
      December 14, 2016 / 10:23 pm

Oh wow, I didn’t realize you had a long commute before!

Cecil loves looking out at all the trees/ birds now :). He looked out into a courtyard before but there was never a whole lot to see there since it was surrounded by apartments on three sides!

      • Kristina
        December 15, 2016 / 7:49 am

LOL luckily the toilet has it’s own area with a door :). In the bathroom pic above you’ll see a room to the right of the shower — the toilet is in there!

  12. December 14, 2016 / 6:53 pm

I hope you were able to get in a run today! I hate when bathroom sinks don’t have counter space. It doesn’t make any sense to me!

    • Kristina
      December 14, 2016 / 10:24 pm

It doesn’t make any sense to me either!!!! ESPECIALLY because there are also no medicine cabinets on the wall. Like, where were these people storing their things?! Such a mystery!

  13. December 17, 2016 / 1:28 pm

I’ve been meaning to buy some cheap highlighter (even though I’m terrible at applying it), so I think I’ll try the ELF palette!

Smart move on getting a desk/vanity so you can get ready elsewhere without waking Adam. I like that our bathroom “suite” has doors so I can get ready without waking Matt, but I wish there were room for a sit down vanity so I could do makeup more comfortably. I hate standing while I do it!
