Chicago Marathon Training Week #7

Last night I saw a water spout during my run!

Seeing it reminded me that last year during 4th of July weekend a water spout touched ground on the beach and sent people scattering. There must be something about this time of year that makes us prone to spouts!

The run was HUMID.

The rain never reached the beach so it was just sticky and gross out. Chicago is going to feel amazing this fall! (I’m counting on it.)

I hate going to the gym on Mondays because it’s always the most crowded night but I was able to work my way in and get in a decent session! Whoo!

I hope you had a great week last week and this one is off to a positive start too!

Have you ever seen any crazy weather related things during your runs?

Have you played with the Pokemon app at all?

  1. Staci

Is everyone in the gym trying to work off the weekend on Monday? 🙂 It really doesn’t seem like it has been 7 weeks since you started training at all! I am glad things are going good also.
I know that the weather up here has been more humid than usual yesterday we were at 88, feels like 93 with like 70% and we never are that high. It was not fun to run in at all. I don’t think I would survive a week down there in the summer while training.

Hahaha Adam said the same thing, “everyone goes on Monday because they feel guilty about the weekend!” There might be something to it because during the weekends the gym is usually empty!

the water spout picture is so crazy looking! No pokemon for me…i think i was even too old for pokemon in general when it was popular.

I never played it as a kid either, but it’s actually pretty fun. Yesterday during my run I saw a bunch of other runners holding their phones out. Part of the game includes walking a certain distance to incubate your poke egg. Some eggs will hatch after 2K, 5K, 10K etc …. being a runner is paying dividends right now with my eggs! 😀

  3. Megan @ Meg Go Run

This sounds dumb but I never even heard of a waters spot! Great training this week- 11 miles! Paul went on a hike w/ his pals at a state park yesterday and they saw lots of people playing Pokemon Go. They even stole stuff from someone’s party… or something like that. I am not saying it right I am sure!

Hahhah I’m not sure what that means but it might be true! I never played Pokemon as a kid so I’m just learning all of the terminology now!

A water spout is a small tornado that occurs over water and is connected to a cloud. I’ve never seen one in person before! It was really cool to watch because it actually dissipated but then touched down again a few seconds later!

  4. Denise

Woah, that water spout is incredible! And freaky! ha. I don’t think I’ve seen anything too crazy, weather-wise, on my runs. I’ve seen storms move in pretty quickly, but that’s standard. I love the Pokemon app, which I am embarrassed to say. 🙂 I am in grad school, and on campus, there are SO many people playing. It is half awesome to see everyone outside and half freaky that patterns can change so much due to an app! I haven’t played it too much, but I think it’s a neat game.

I am kind of embarrassed about the Pokemon app too. When I got to the beach last night I figured I would just collect whatever I could at the end of the run — but then I saw a bunch of the other regular runners with their phones out so I joined the party for my final mile. Sometimes it’s hard to keep my pace within the easy range, but playing Pokemon definitely helped! 😀

  5. Sam

I love that you’ve included looking for Pokemon on here. I don’t have that app. I don’t want it either because I’d spend all of my time looking for him (if that’s what you even do)

    1. Kristina

Hahahahah I love your comment so much!

  6. Heather [is probably running]

Eeeep! I don’t know exactly what a water spout is, but if I saw something tornado-y looking I would be running for cover.

A lot of my friends seem to be playing pokemon, but I haven’t downloaded the app. Mostly I just don’t get what is going on.

It is a type of tornado! It’s a small tornado that forms over water and is attached to a particular kind of cloud. I’ve never seen one in person before – but they appear to be really slow moving. Everyone along the beach stopped what they were doing to take pics and videos! What scared me even more was a huge bolt of lightning that hit way too close. It was in that moment I realized running at the beach has got to be one of the worst places to be when it’s lightning out because the sidewalk is covered with tall trees and metal light poles!

      1. Heather [is probably running]

Yeah that is really scary. If there is lightning I try to stay indoors. I love running but I don’t want to end up being killed (or worse, expelled).

^^Just a little nerdy reference to get you through your day.

That is the coolest picture! That would suck if it came on land though.
Week 7 done 🙂 You are nailing it!
I sure hope you get a good Chicago day, wasn’t it hot last year? Maybe that will help the odds to be cool this year 🙂 It is like my local race in Nov. it can be beautiful or it could be 80…

Guilty. I just installed Pokemon Go. I thought it would be fun with the kids. My son especially loves Pokemon, but he only has an iPod touch, so unless I hotspot it all the time, he will be out of luck. I caught my first one. That’s as far as I’ve gotten!
Chicago will probably feel downright chilly to you!

Ugh, it’s the WORST when there’s rain close by but it never actually hits. The humidity is indescribable.

Wow, week 7! Moving right along!

Wow that water spout thing is CRAZY. Not being from FL I would run for it if saw that thing.

We have monsoons out there so it’s clear skies, within minutes you have a wall of dust, wind, and rain, then minutes later all clear. Crazy stuff

Yes we are playing pokemon Go. I’m wondering if any of the mountains have pokemon in them..hmmm
