Lou @ Running Through China nominated me for a Liebster Award! I know I’ve done a couple of them already, but I’m a sucker for Q&As : ) 


1. Do you remember why you started running and when this was?

In my early twenties I told Adam that I was going to run a marathon and he laughed.

I don’t remember the exact day or year, but I do remember sitting on the couch in our old condo and saying the words. There was no conviction behind those words, and I cannot blame Adam for laughing. At the time the hardest workout I did consisted of intervals on the elliptical.

This year I am going to run a marathon and it’s going to be awesome (and probably painful too, but still awesome).

There was no specific reason that I started running except that I decided I wanted to. I literally woke up one morning and was like I’m going to start running. It was the best spontaneous decision I ever made!

2. What’s your favorite post workout meal or snack?

I loooooove a good post workout smoothie. Frozen mango + pineapple + banana + vanilla greek yogurt is my absolute favorite! But I’m really lazy about cleaning the blender so I don’t have smoothies nearly as often as I would like : )

3. If you could rewind to any age or point in time right now, what would it be?

I would probably go back to my early twenties and tell myself to calm down. I was obsessed with graduating, starting grad school, getting a job, etc. and I missed out on really enjoying the college experience.

4. Do you have a favorite song? Or top 3?

I will tell you my all time favorite song, but you have to promise to not laugh, okay?

It’s Baby One More Time by Britney. Seriously.


I have no idea what it is about that song, but it always makes me happy!

5. Party drugs in your youth – yay or nay?

Nope. I tried pot but that’s about it.

6. What is your biggest fitness motivation?

My biggest motivation is reaching my distance goals. When I’m getting ready for a specific race I am committed to my training. I think perhaps that’s why I’ve been in a little bit of a slump lately. The Princess Half was my last race and I started the taper for that in mid-Feb.

I am really looking forward to jumping into marathon training!


7. Ever not quite feel real?

Yes, when I am really sleepy and my brain is foggy I feel like I’m just going through the motions of whatever I’m doing… like a robot!

8. What 3 things bring you the most joy in life?

  • Adam
  • Watching Cecil sleep
  • Eating chinese food

I’m a big fan of all three!


9. Ever try any crazy ‘fad’ diet such as Atkins, the baby food diet, etc?

Nope, I’ve never done any of the popular trendy diets.

10. What’s your biggest goal that you are working on right now?

My biggest running related goal for the year is crossing the finish line at the Portland Marathon!

My biggest non-running related goal has to do with reaching new heights with my little candle shop! I’ve got a few things in the works : )


The candles themselves are made from soy wax and completely eco-friendly. I’m currently working on updating all the packaging and mailing materials so that they are eco-friendly too.

For the last month or so I’ve been using bubble wrap that’s made from recycled materials, but I want to source some even more eco-friendly shipping materials that will still protect the candles en route to their homes.

What is YOUR favorite post workout meal or snack?

    Another great Q&A… Baby one more time, really? Lol. Very wise spontaneous decision, I’d say it’s paying off really well. Good luck with the candle stuff, I hour it takes off for you. Favorite song right now is Royals by Lorde, don’t know why.

      I love Royals too! I haven’t heard any of her other songs though, I should probably get her album on Spotify!

    Good luck in Portland! Favorite song of all time Glory of Love by Peter Cetera (song in the 2nd Karate Kid movie) 🙂 Might be embarrassing;)

    i think that a marathon is the best motivator, goal, reason to run ever! i have a very similar approach to running, i just decided that i wanted to see if i could go farther…turns out i could and then i was hooked 🙂

      I really think running is the perfect sport for people who love pushing themselves/setting goals. In team sports you’re fairly reliant on other people for the ultimate outcome, but with running you are in full control!

      I have so many pictures of Cecil sleeping! Adam is like, “stop taking pictures, he always looks the same” but it’s such a cute look 🙂

    That’s funny, I only make smoothies in the summer when I actually have time to clean the blender. 🙂 I remember the first time I heard Baby One More Time… I was driving home from HS. I was prob 16. I loved it right away! It was such a popular song.

      I saw Britney in concert when she was opening for NSYNC shortly after the song came out and I was hooked. Loved watching her sing and dance!

    I am glad I am not the only on who gets lazy about cleaning the blender lol I just ate a bigger lunch instead of making a shake because I thought wash that?? nah…
    I love the song choice! I have an old favorite song- Dreamer by Livin’ Joy it makes me run faster and since the early 90’s I never get sick of it lol I loved all your answers 🙂

      Hahah exactly! Every time I make a smoothie I think I should stop being so lazy because they are amazing, but really it’s such a pain to clean the blender!

    I like a lot of Britney Spears songs and “Baby One More Time” is definitely one of my favorites! One of my favorite songs to workout to is “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”! It also puts me in a happy mood!

      Yes! I love Miley’s version of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun … and I should probably stop sharing these facts about myself because they make me sound like a 12 year old 🙂

      They are such good mood songs though!

    Cool blog! Wish I had discovered it sooner. It’s so inspiring to know that you just decided to start running one day in your twenties and have come so far, because this is almost what’s happening to me! I’m 25 and had just decided a few weeks ago that I wanted to do a 5K and started running, and although I’ve not been running for very long, my spirit is high and I have no plan to stop any time soon! Good luck with your goals and upcoming races~~

      Hi Yang! That is so awesome — so glad to hear you’re hooked already! Once you cross that 5K finish line I bet you will start thinking about 10Ks, half marathons and full marathons 🙂 It’s really an addiction!

    Excellent spontaneous decision hey, glad you decided to start running, and you are going to smash your marathon this year! Wow, I am a little surprised re: the Britney song, lol… I have heaps of embarrassing songs that I like, from classic Bon Jovi songs to ones by Sheena Easton (is that how you spell it?).

    Oh, phew, glad there are others out there who also don’t feel real. 🙂
