How We Chose Cecil’s Name

In honor of National Pet Day (which was yesterday) I thought I would share some pics of when Cecil was just a tiny baby!

I adopted him from my mom’s neighbor who had a female cat that was not spayed. The neighbor asked my mom if she knew of anyone that wanted a kitten and that would take good care of it. My mom sent me this pic and asked if I was interested.

Um, YES!

I actually wasn’t looking to adopt a new cat. Leo had passed away not long before and I thought I would never get over the heartache enough to have another cat. But this wasn’t just any other cat… I mean look at him, who could say no?!

Once I said yes to adopting the kitten Adam and I got down to choosing a name. I wanted something that would play off of the name Leo the Lion (in honor of Leo), and one day Adam said “what about Cecil the Cougar?” Done deal. I loved that it was unique. I had never and probably will never meet another cat named Cecil!

When Cecil was 9 weeks old I went, picked him up and brought him home :).

(^ Very unfortunate haircut on my part. I was so happy when it grew out. I look like a mushroom.)

I can’t believe Cecil is going to be 10 years old this year. He’s still my tiny baby!!! πŸ™‚

He’s also a jealous baby. Yesterday my mom dropped her cat Georgie off for us to babysit while she goes to the Keys for a few days. Cecil cannot stand when we pet Georgie. As soon as he sees us giving Georgie attention he runs over andΒ pushes him out of the way.Β It’s pretty funny!

The boys were getting along pretty well so I nipped out in the late afternoon for a RUN, yay!

I forgot my visor and was blinded by the sun :). It was pretty warm out but I was too happy to be out running in the afternoon to let anything get me down.

I did notice that Fort Lauderdale seems to be confused about which season it is. It looks like fall because the leaves are falling off all of the trees.

Is this normal? I honestly don’t remember seeing this happen before in the spring!

How did you decide on your pet’s name?
How old is your pet going to be this year?

Marcy dogs name has 2 origins. I am a huge fan of Peanuts (cartoon, but also the food) so I had wanted a name from a character. I also wanted to name her based off of the high peaks in NY, I was on track to finish hiking all of them when I adopted her. Marcy was the perfect fit. Although I chose the mountain spelling instead of the cartoon. πŸ™‚

Mitten: she has way too many toes and her front feet are shaped like mittens. It is singular (NEVER Mittens!) so I can call her Mitten Kitten.

I HAVE always wondered how Cecil got his name!

Our two cats: Geno is named for Evgeni “Geno” Malkin, an NHL player for the Pittsburgh Penguins (Kevin’s favorite sports team). Bernie was named by the rescue volunteers for the street they found him on, Burnham, standing at a stop sign meowing at traffic.

I love how the kitties got their names! Growing up I had a cat named Timberlake after JT so I totally get naming pets after favorite people haha!

I still cannot get over how much Georgie and Jelly look like each other!

No matter how old they get, our kitties will always be our tiny babies!

      Tiny little babies!

I think Georgie will look even more like Jelly as he gets older. He’s starting to fill out now. He’s always been super skinny. Adam calls him The Slinky because he’s long, skinny and wiggles out of your arms every time you try to hold him!

My family adopted three pets when I still lived there. Two dogs and one kitty. The first dog was already named Coco when we got her. Years later she had her son, Flea. We named him like that because we all love Red Hot Chili Peppers, and that’s the nickname for one of their musicians.

Last but not least, my brother got home one day with one of the most cute kitties I’ve ever seen. She’s all white, with light and dark brown stains, and light green eyes. We were so happy holding her until my mom asks “how are we going to name her?” and then I just replied: Sofi.

For some reason that name made a lot of sense for my family. Now she’s our cat Sofi, aka little cow.

It’s so true! When my mom asked if I wanted a kitten I was like “no I don’t think so,” and then I saw Cecil and it was all over! πŸ˜€

I think Cecil is a very unique but cool name for a pet. I love human names for animals, especially kind of unique human names. When is the last time you met a human Cecil?!
