I Escaped for a Quick Weekend Away

On Friday after work I hopped in my car and drove up to Orlando for a girls weekend with my mom. The year anniversary of my step-father’s unexpected passing was in April, and it was time for my mom to get away and have some fun. My mom lives north west of Orlando and I live south east, so it’s the perfect middle ground for us.

We did some shopping and lots of eating. Pretty sure I ate enough gourmet food to feed a small town.

My mom and our delicious dessert (I was adopted).

I didn’t do any running during my weekend getaway, although my mom and I did do a lot of walking. On Saturday night my heel was feeling a bit tender, and I was worried I wouldn’t get a long run in at all this weekend.

When I got home on Sunday, after watching the disastrous HEAT game, I hit the treadmill with a goal of 10 miles. I told myself if I felt any heel pain at all I would immediately stop and go home (that’s the beauty of treadmill running). After miles 3, 5 and 8 I stopped for water and assessed how the ol foot was doing – and it held up!

Afterwards I soaked my legs in the pool. The water was hardly cold (it was probably 80+ degrees), but it felt good anyway! I highly recommend soaking your legs in the pool for a few minutes while chatting on the phone post-run.

Ended up finishing the week with 18 miles. Prior to my heel thing (whatever it is) I expected that number to be closer to 28 than 18, but sometimes these things are out of our control.

Do you feel weird taking pictures in a restaurant?
– I know it’s a pretty common thing now, but I always feel so weird taking pictures of my food when I’m out and about. My mom thinks the idea of photographing food for the blog/facebook/instagram is pretty funny.

Great mom date, looks like tons of fun. Plus the did liked delicious. Glad your heel held up on the treadmill, good job stopping periodically to check on the heel. Don’t worry about your weekly total, mending your heel and taking care of your body is most important. We take pics in restaurants all the time lol.

Don’t get me started on the HEAT, totally bummed.

Haha it’s so normal to take pictures everywhere now! I don’t feel weird if I’m taking pics with or of people, but when I’m taking pics of my food I feel like everyone is judging me! haha

We ate at Citricos inside The Grand Floridian on the Disney property. I’m not a really big Disney parks fan, but I LOVE Citricos and it will always keep me coming back! It’s great because the food is fancy, but you don’t have to dress up too much because you’re at Disney! 🙂

Oh – so glad that you were able to make it through the entire 10 miles without any heel pain!
And, fun that you and your mom spent the weekend together – good for both of y’all!

It was so good to see her in person. I have my fingers crossed that she’ll move down by me SOON! 🙂

Fun tip: most dessert sauces are GF. Gravies and dark/thick sauces meant for savory dishes often have soy sauce in them and aren’t celiac-friendly.

Whenever I crave a crazy GF dessert, I go to Outback for the Chocolate Thunder from Downunder. That baby is gluten free and devilishly good!

That food = amazeballs! I am salivating right now (yep, no breakfast yet, now, boom, really would like that dessert for brekkie!).

Sounds like a fantastic weekend, and woohoo! No heel pain for your treadmill run! Great stuff. 🙂

I hear you re: the feeling of taking food pictures when you’re out. I too feel a little self-conscious when I do this. But, so glad you did, as we got to see it and it all looked ace.

Glad you had a great weekend! 🙂

The dessert had bananas in it, so it could maybe pass for a breakfast food? haha.

I always snap a super quick pic of my food and pray that it’s in focus. I feel so weird about doing it!

I take pictures of my food every so often, when I remember. Sometimes I get so excited to eat that I get about 10 bites in before I realize, “oops, forgot the picture.” I want to travel to Florida SO BAD!!! Orlando is on my list – you are so lucky!

Orlando is very touristy, come to the MIami / Fort Lauderdale area for the best of Florida 🙂 I will show you around my favorite beach running loop 🙂

That’s so sweet you went for a mom weekend 😉 I know she must really appreciate you that’s a hard loss to go through. Great job on the long run! I always feel funny snapping pics too lol but it’s the norm now right.

It really is the norm! When I was done snapping my pics I looked around to see if people were laughing at me, but of course they were just snapping their own pics 🙂

Yay for you for being a good daughter and spending quality mom time with your momma! And of course yay for running with no heel pain. Soaking legs in pool post-run = amazing!
