I Needed This Win (and I Need Your Vote)

Happy Monday! I hope you are feeling energized from a great weekend. I am feeling refreshed but also sore. On Saturday Adam and I did a workout together and I went for a new squat max. Still 160lbs but I did FOUR reps (last week I only did two reps).

We filmed it and I’ll have that clip up in my vlog probably tomorrow :).

Adam thought it might be interesting to share what my warmup for squatting 160lbs looks like:

-8 reps @ 45lbs (the bar)
-8 reps @ 95lbs
-8 reps @135lbs
-1 rep @ 150lbs
-4 reps @ 160lbs

The hardest set for me is usually the second set at 95lbs because my legs are just getting used to feeling weight on them. It’s just like how always we say “you can’t trust the first minute of a run” because your legs are just getting warmed up.

My legs actually aren’t that sore today, but we did a core workout after legs and my core is sore! I honestly have a very weak core. I always have… even when training for a race core work is the thing I neglect the most. It’s nice to have someone else push me in that regard.

Adam and I used to workout together all the time back in like 2012-2013 and we stopped because our workout schedules got out of sync. It’s nice to have our schedules synced at least one day a week now!

Anyway, I’ve been thinking about whether it would be interesting for you if Adam and I filmed a full workout? I mean neither of us are personal trainers so we wouldn’t be giving advice or anything, but you could see more of what I do besides squatting (to get stronger as a runner and in general) during my comeback.

If you’d like to see a full workout vlog-style please hit the heart below so I know:

Honestly I needed these last few squatting wins after such a crappy fitness year. It feels so good to be challenging myself even if it’s with two feet firmly planted on the ground.

Thanks for following along :). Have a great Monday!

What’s your current favorite form of cross training?

  1. Sam @ Grapefruit & Granola

It sounds silly but I really like Kayla Itsine’s Bikini Body Guide. You really get some great strength training mixed in with cardio. I wish I had found her program before my triathlon training! Hoping 2018 is a fantastic new beginning in your running / fitness journey!! <3

I have the BBG too, I love that it gives illustrations for doing everything. It’s definitely a great cross training program!

  2. Megan @ Meg Go Run

Congrats on your squat PR! That is so freaking awesome. Yes I’d love to see a workout! I really wish I could squat but it bothers my ITB so much. My PT tried to get me to squat but it just never worked. It would always pulsate after. It sucks. 🙁

Thanks! Yeah that’s such a bummer that it bothers your ITB so much. Riding the regular stationary style bike always makes my ITB feel strained and then it pulsates so I never do that anymore. I was a little worried that spinning would do the same, but I guess because you’re in a totally different position it doesn’t bother me (much, just a little).

  3. Heather [is probably running]

I don’t know if I could even squat just the bar. You are so strong!

Hot yoga is my favorite cross training. I’m looking forward to getting back into it after my marathon.

I bet you could squat the bar! I think the most intimidating part is feeling the bar across your back and thinking “oh no this is heavy” and that’s because it IS heavy across the back… but our legs are so strong from running that once you get down into the squat position, pushing yourself back up is the easy part! It’s just getting past the mental part of “oh this feels heavy I won’t be able to get back up if I go down!”

  4. Lisa @ TechChick Adventures

I’d like to see a workout! That is a great accomplishment. My daughter just started “conditioning” (weight lifting) for track and she tells me every day how sooooooore she is.
In a week or so I hope to be telling you that my favorite cross training is riding my new spin bike. 🙂

Ohhhhh does that mean you ordered it? Very exciting!!!! 😀

Hahahah yeah I am right there with your daughter! My legs are surprisingly not that sore, and my butt isn’t as sore as I would expect, but my core is a mess!

Awesome job! That is amazing, girl! It’s hard for me to pick a favorite sport because I give them all equal love and I like them all for what they offer. I will say I do love how strong I feel when I do weights and yoga! I am not nearly as strong as you are but I really enjoy it.

Thanks Susan! You are definitely an equal opportunity exercise lover, I really wish I was more like you in that regard. I definitely have my favorite things to do and have to force myself to do the other stuff.
