I Skipped My Run (Oops) + Meet My Friends!

I was supposed to get up super early and run six miles before work this morning. But that didn’t happen. I am just not a morning person at all. The fact that I get up early on Saturdays to do my long runs is kind of a miracle!

Oh well, I am not going to feel bad about missing the run because I am too excited that I get to see these ladies today:

These are my grad school girls and I almost wish I was still in grad school just so I could see them multiple times a week again! That’s Peta-Gaye on the left, Bre in the middle and Shaundi on the right.

They are three of the smartest people I know and why they hang out with me is a mystery!

Peta-Gaye is a fancy communications director for a big corporation. Bre teaches middle school and her students call her The Pretty Teacher and Shaundi is a college professor.

We don’t see each other very often anymore, but we do try to get together four times a year for each other’s birthdays. Today we are celebrating Peta-Gaye’s bday!

Bre is a runner (and former collegiate athlete – she played on our university’s basketball team) and she is so inspirational. She ran her first half marathon in January of this year while she was seven months pregnant! My hero!

In grad school we would sometimes skype during late night classes (you know, while taking notes ….) and this was one of my favorite conversations ever:

We decided those emoticons represent our group! PG’s because she wears glasses, mine because I have black hair, Shaundi’s because she is so nice (and her faith is a big part of who she is) and Bre because she can be very girly.

We were probably a little giddy here because it was 9:48pm and class ended at 10pm!

I have to say, I don’t miss my grad school schedule at all. I used to get up at 4:30am and work my full time job as a marketing manager from 7-4pm. Then I would teach a section of public speaking at my university from 5pm – 6:30pm, and then I would go to class from 7pm-10pm.

I would then drive 45 minutes home and eat dinner, do homework and get somewhere around 3-4 hours a sleep.

During the weekends I would pretty much sleep all day and night.

I do NOT miss that at all! But I do miss hanging out with PG, Bre and Shaundi. They made the long days and sleepless nights a lot more fun!

Everything is better with friends!

Do you still keep in touch with your college/grad school friends?

What did you major in? Do you have a minor?

I bonded like Gorilla Glue to my grad school cohort. Something about the high pressure/stress makes those friendships rock solid. I miss them a TON, but those friendships are the kind that distance can’t chip away at.
