If I won the lottery tomorrow…

Thank you to Jennifer @ The Final Forty for nominating me for a Liebster Award. With this award Jennifer has give me 10 questions to answer to help you get to know me better.

1. What are some of your hobbies (other than running)?

  • Reading (or rather re-reading my favorite books over and over and over again)
  • Making candles
  • Watching lots of football and basketball

2. What do you do for a living?

I work for an advertising agency and get to combine my creative and analytical side every day.

I would say the hardest part of my job is hiring for intern or entry-level positions. I am constantly surprised at how out-dated the coursework for advertising/marketing is these days!

3. When and why did you start blogging?

I started blogging in November 2012 on tumblr, but switched over to this blog in March 2013. I mostly used tumblr to look for inspirational/motivational graphics since I was very new to running. Eventually I decided I wanted more flexibility to connect with the running community and started this blog.

4. What are some of your favorite ways to stay fit (other than running)?

  • Weightlifting
  • Intervals on the stationary bike
  • Reading blogs that motivate me to get up off my butt when I feel lazy : )

5. What would you say is your greatest accomplishment?

Oh man, that’s tough. I don’t think I’ve done anything worthy of being called the greatest achievement… yet!

6. If you won the lottery tomorrow… what would you spend the money on?

It would depend on the amount I received, haha. One thing I would really like to do is start a nonprofit, so I would probably use the money to invest in that.

I would also buy the Clippers from their racist owner and become best friends with CP3.

Oh, should I include something about running in here too?

I would buy SO MANY PAIRS of my favorite Under Armor capris… and I would get all of my favorite running bloggers/readers to do Ragnar Vegas with me 🙂

7. What’s your favorite song on your running playlist?

I haven’t been listening to music while running lately, so my last playlist was created back in January. Favorite song on that playlist is Super Bass by Nicki Minaj!

8. What’s your biggest pet peeve?

When I can hear someone eating/chewing. UGHHHH.

9. What has been your favorite race experience thus far?

I actually think it was my very first 5K which was a Color Me Rad run. I had fun running through the colored powdered, and when I saw the finish line I got SO EXCITED! Running that last .10 was awesome.

10. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Tough question, but I think it’s “live for today.”

It’s so easy for me to get caught up in what I want for the future, that I forget to just relax and enjoy the present.

If you won the lottery what RUNNING thing would you spend it on???

If I won the lottery, I’d buy a house somewhere with mountains and beaches…then I’d make my own school.

It’s interesting that the coursework for advertising is outdated! Can you give me an example?? I always think “school world” vs. “real world” is an important distinction.

If I won the lottery the week after you won the lottery I think I would come live in your neighborhood. Having mountains and beaches sounds perfect!

I would say the most frustrating thing is that most recent college grads have very little understanding of advertising/marketing analytics and how to use data to make informed decisions. The applicants usually have a thorough educational background in copywriting, using creative tools like Illustrator and Photoshop and knowledge of marketing channels; however, they have not learned what data to look for when analyzing a campaign to understand which parts were effective and how to use that information to make the next campaign better.

For example, yesterday I interviewed someone for a social media position. She told me that since she grew up in the digital age she obviously knew how to use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. and that she had learned how to use the channels for business in her classes. However, she could not tell me what she would look for in analytical software to determine if a post was successful or not, how to track sales from a social media post or how to a/b test a post or landing page. She had no knowledge of a/b testing whatsoever, even though this a key factor in any campaign in the real world. I don’t blame her for not knowing, since she was interviewing for her first job ever. I do wish that the curriculum at universities was updated to include the data-driven aspect of marketing.

LOL I loooooove the things you would do if you won the lottery- especially buy The Clippers! I would book a million fabulous vacations, buy a home in California, and install a copy machine in my classroom.

I agree with taking the Clippers away from their current owner but how do you not invest in the Miami Heat??? What???

    Another list of great Q&A

    • April 30, 2014 / 11:21 am

I totally love Micky Arison as an owner… and I can’t imagine him selling a team that has LeBron James on it.

IF he was up for it, absolutely! If I could own the Heat or the Dolphins I would be the happiest person on earth!

Every single day of my life I wonder what LeBron’s 5K time is lol

my hubby says that he would pay off our house…that’s all he can think about. then he starts to imagine all the other people that he could make debt-free. he actually fantasizes about this a lot :). i’ve never thought about what i would do. probably quit my job, but also hire a nanny and a house cleaner 🙂

    • April 30, 2014 / 4:54 pm

      Your hubby sounds awesome!

With no job, a nanny and a house cleaner you would have so many hours in the day to go running!

    Love this! 🙂

OMG, I can’t STAND hearing people chew…totally grosses me out, haha.

If I won the lottery, I would be registering for races like there’s no tomorrow…I would definitely complete my mission of running every single runDisney race, that’s for sure. 🙂

    • April 30, 2014 / 4:55 pm

If I won the lottery I would buy you entries into all of them too, but I have no doubt that you’re going to run them all anyway 🙂

  6. April 30, 2014 / 8:54 pm

I think that your candle making is a pretty big accomplishment – not everyone can say they make and sell a product!!!
I love that you would start a nonprofit if you won the lottery – very cool.

  7. April 30, 2014 / 8:56 pm

Great to learn a little more about you! I had no idea you are in advertising. My husband is a partner in an advertising/marketing company here in Bend (he is the director of PR). I love his job – all kinds of fun perks! My husband and I were recently in Kenya and gave away our running shoes while we were there. It was humbling to see how grateful people were to receive a pair of good shoes and we felt like we wanted to do more. If I won the lottery I would spread the shoe love and send shoes (both new and used) to places all around the world.

I love all your answers 🙂 If I won the lottery I’d never walk through the door at my job again lol and I’d buy a top of line Garmin and enter a race every month in different states and never put on real clothes – just running clothes lol and I would sponsor a girls get -a -way week!
