Just Another Day of Run, Run, Running!

I got home from work late tonight and decided to hit the treadmill instead of running alone in the dark where I tend to assume scary monsters and serial killers are hiding behind every tree.

Also, just a couple months ago the paper said some dude approached two young female runners with a gun just one city over from me …. both of the women luckily escaped but that story has been hanging in my mind. I live in a really good neighborhood but you just never know!

Anyway, the treadmill stinks, we all know that, and one mile in I was like UGH I can’t possibly go on!! So dramatic I know, but that’s definitely what I was thinking. Then this girl came in and got on the treadmill next to me. I think she must be doing the Couch to 5K program or something similar because she was doing short run/walk intervals. Seeing her push through those short run/walk intervals reminded me of this time last year when I was doing Couch to 5K.

You are going to want to give up, don't!

Watching her gave me the strength I needed to kick up the pace and put out another two strong miles for a total of three for the day. At the end I let out a little WHOOO which I think may have scared her even though it was meant as an expression of happiness on my part + encouragement for her πŸ™‚ Oh well, it’s okay if people think I’m weird because I probably am!

I felt like I finished the three miles strong though my shins are feeling a little bit sore. I’m not sure if that’s because of the treadmill or because I’ve been pushing the pace pretty hard lately or ???

Anyway, I emailed my run coach when I got home asking for advice and she just replied saying I should take a rest day tomorrow and do some swimming instead of running. That sounds like a plan to me — though I really need to go on my lunch break and get a good sports bathing suit so I can avoid flashing everyone at the pool when I’m doing laps!

Do you ever get sore shins? Do you use compression sleeves? If so, which brand do you recommend?

Nothing like some friendly competition to keep it moving! I have to do my speedwork on the treadmill today because it’s storming, and I’m going to really need to push it because speedwork on the treadmill is the worst.

I use ProCompression sleeves and LOVE them. Shin soreness is usually caused by either adding too much intensity to quickly, or having shoes that are too worn in. Compress, ice, rest, and foam roll! (Talk to your coach, too!)
