Hey there!

So, you want to know what I did this weekend? Sleep. I didn’t run one single mile. I didn’t make plans to see my mom or any friends. Adam and I didn’t even make any plans. In between sleeping all I did was watch football and Master of None.

Last week I saw how much lack of sleep can negatively impact your life. I was only getting about four hours a night and my runs felt terrible, I made poor food choices and I had very little motivation. I don’t feel bad about having the laziest weekend ever because I finally feel well rested and ready to tackle life!

While I didn’t go running I did keep up with daily stretching. Have you seen this Insta from Mindy? She really is just like us.

Well, she’s similar to me anyway. When I foam roll my face is usually scrunched up and my mouth is open while I yell obscenities. Usually the F word on repeat.

Speaking of the F word, let’s talk Florence! Adam and I have started planning our big vacation for the year and I think it’s going to be a tour through Italy. We’re looking at Florence, Rome, Verona, Naples and Venice in May. From what we’ve read all of the cities are quite close to each and accessible via train (and plane too).

If you’ve ever been to Italy please share your top places to visit and things to do. We’ll definitely want to hit all of the major landmarks and tourist-y sites but hope to have a few off-the-beaten-path experiences too. And we want to eat at the very best places that the locals love. No Sampler Italiano from the Olive Garden during this trip ;).

Where is your absolute favorite city in the world to visit?
Was your weekend busy or super lazy like mine?

Glad you were able to catch up on sleep and get some rest! I know there is no way I could function on 4 hours of sleep!
Your trip sounds amazing! I went to Italy while I was studying abroad, you are gonna have a great time! My cousin just finished studying abroad in Florence so if you have any questions I can ask her for you:)

Ohh thank you! I’ll probably have lots of questions as the trip gets closer!

Hi Kristina! This was my first weekend of training for marathon #2! I think Florence was one of the best places I have ever visited, I really recommend getting tickets to the Uffizzi Gallery, we had to queue for ages but it was so worth it. We visited Siena and San Gimigniano too – I highly recommend both. (Also I read The Medici: Godfathers of the Renaissance while there and it really improved my experience to know about the history of the region.) Top tip: eat gelato daily. Have an amazing time and let me know if you pass through London 😉

The Uffizzi for sure!! So so so worth it.

GO JASMINE! That’s awesome! Keep me updated on how training is going!

Thanks for the tip about Uffizzi and about reading The Medici. I’m adding both to the list!

Last night we watched the episode of Master of None about Indian people on TV and during a discussion about brown face, his friend goes, “Is Mindy Kaling real!?” I laughed so hard!

I am introducing Paul to Will and Grace soon. He agreed to watch two episodes with me to see if he liked it. I think he will. I know that is a random comment but we were talking about it while watching Master of None so that’s why it came to mind!

Italy will be SO WONDERFUL! When Paul and I finally make it to Europe I will need travel tips from you! I would have no idea how to plan a European vacation,

Hahaha yes, I just watched that episode this weekend! I loved that line!

I never watched Will and Grace, but I think I would really like it.

I think you would too. 🙂 I didn’t watch it when it first came on. I think it was after college when I finally started watching it.

that sounds like an exciting vacation! I would love to “eat my way through Italy!”
I am glad you were able to catch up on sleep, I wouldn’t make it on 4 hours a night!

Florence is such an awesome city! I second the recommendation to visit the Uffizzi Gallery. Also, don’t miss going to see the Duomo. We were lucky and went during the off-season, so neither place was too busy, but both of them would be worth a wait! There is an awesome gelato place near the Duomo called Grom (well let’s be honest, all of the gelato places are amazing, but this was stood out!). You will love Italy!

I’ve definitely had those relaxing and lazy weekends before and honestly, I love them. Nothing is mentally better to me than just laying around when you desperately need it!

  7. January 11, 2016 / 12:16 pm

Wow! That sounds like an amazing trip. You should definitely do it. I’m not really much of a city person, but I do love Seattle and Boston. I’ll go ahead and call my favorite city Moab, since that means that I’m close to some pretty awesome hiking. Also, lazy weekends are the best!

  8. January 11, 2016 / 12:30 pm

Italy sounds amazing! My old roommate loved her Italian honeymoon last year, I can probably ask her for recs. I believe they also went to Tuscany. Mangia mangia! PS – lazy weekends are the best!

Sleep is hard to fit in! but a necessity, I need like 9 hours a night to feel really great.I usually get about 7.
Italy sounds lovely, I have never been.

  10. January 11, 2016 / 4:00 pm

Lazy weekends are the best! You totally deserved one after last week.

Oh – and on the Italy front… you may regret asking for advice because I studied in Florence for a semester in college and after graduation took Henri back for a very similar trip to what you mentioned. I have too many restaurant, museum, shopping advice that I’ll send you an e-mail instead of posting it all here… you’ve been warned! 😀

  11. January 11, 2016 / 5:46 pm

I completed a marathon…..of Walking Dead reruns! It was the best!

  12. January 11, 2016 / 7:10 pm

When I don’t sleep well, I eat like crap (I think for comfort?) and rarely workout. It’s a bad cycle! I’m a total sleep diva.

Italy is my favorite European country to visit, even though I don’t speak Italian! Florence is GORGEOUS and totally worth staying in for a few days. Venice is nice, but a day or two is all you really need there. It’s always packed and very touristy. I’m soooo jealous that you can take a big trip like this!! Enjoy!

  13. January 11, 2016 / 9:21 pm

Catching up on rest sounds like the perfect way to spend the weekend! I worked on Sunday so that wasn’t very fun. Getting more sleep is actually something I know I need to work on in the new year. I will go stretches of time where I only get about 5 hours, and like you described- your health starts to suffer.

I LOVE ITALY!!! I went there many many many years ago (2003?) and still dream about going back. I went to Florence, Rome, and Naples (as part of a cruise of the Mediterranean) and fell in love with Rome. It really is a beautiful city. I wish I could have spent more time in Florence. Naples was really neat because of the history – we went to Pompei. If I were to go back, I most certainly would want to hit up the Amalfi Coast. Have fun planning this AMAZING vacation!!!
