Let the 5K Training Fun Begin!

Yesterday I headed out for my run a little later than usual.

The moon was high and beautiful, but it was soooooooooooo HUMID out. I think I had steam rising from the top of my head by the end!

As many of you know, I am now officially in training to get a new 5K PR! With the weather already being so hot I’m kind of nervous, but I’m ready to give it all I’ve got!

Last night was just three easy miles, but atΒ the end of the run my coach had me go through this set of post-run power exercises (includes videos of Lauren doing the exercises).

These five exercises are meant to improve leg/stride power and increase speed!

My first of five upcoming races will be on March 22nd, so just a few weeks away!Β I’ll be running theΒ Kendra’s Kisses Memorial 5K.

I ran this race back in March of 2013, andΒ I also ran a then-PR on this course last September. I don’t love the course but I do like that I am really familiar with it. I like knowing what I’m facing when I’m attempting a PR!

In other news, I finally did one small thing in the way of decorating.

I hung up this beautiful piece of art.

Adam and Cecil. That’s my little family! πŸ™‚

^ Love that kid.

I’m going to sign off for now. I hope that your week is off to a great start!

What is one thing you really want to accomplish this week?

  1. March 3, 2015 / 8:27 am

I want to accomplish the Virtual 5K! True life: I tried it yesterday and my legs were like “Yuuup, nope, not happening” but I’m determined to do it this week!

Love the picture. It has taken me years to figure out where to hang pictures, I had SO LONG with blank walls. It was such a commitment to put a hole in the wall to hang something up!
Good luck with the 5k training!

    • March 4, 2015 / 10:54 pm

It is a commitment! I bought that cat picture like a month ago and just finally hung it!

  3. March 3, 2015 / 9:31 am

I’ve been looking for some 5k’s in my area in April. I think you’ve inspired me to do some speedier races!

My goal this week is to get better. I caught a cold, and I gotta beat it quick!!

    • March 4, 2015 / 10:55 pm

Whoo! Definitely do it so I don’t feel like I’m the lone long distance runner focusing on the 5K! πŸ™‚

I hope you’re starting to feel better!

  4. March 3, 2015 / 9:49 am

Love the art! Your Cecil looks kind of like our Bernie πŸ™‚ Lauren’s strength workout looks awesome, I may need to try it!

One thing I really want to accomplish this week is to get caught up at work and have a great, productive week. I’ve been going through kind of a rough patch at work lately, and my goal is to go into my 4 day weekend next week feeling like I can relax and not have to worry about what I’m missing/getting behind on at work – as much as I can, anyway πŸ™‚

    • March 4, 2015 / 10:57 pm

Cecil and Bernie are two cute cats!

I hope you are accomplishing your productivity goal so that you can have an awesome long birthday weekend :).

  5. March 3, 2015 / 11:45 am

Woohoo! I can’t believe it’s time for 5K training to begin – your half marathons went by in a flash it seems. Then again it’s also March, so maybe I’m just lost altogether haha.

This week I’m hoping to get outside for at least one of my runs. I was able to run outside on Saturday and it was so nice!

    • March 4, 2015 / 10:59 pm

I simultaneously feel like just yesterday I was getting ready for Portland and not even thinking about the half marathons and now they’re over! It’s crazy!

I hope you broke free of the treadmill today!

  6. March 3, 2015 / 11:47 am

The picture looks great! I have a long work to do list and most of it is planning/scheduling type stuff. Once I do that I will feel ACCOMPLISHED.

    • March 4, 2015 / 11:00 pm

      Thank you!

I hope your work stuff is going well. I cannot even begin to imagine the amount or prepping and organizing you have to do for your job!

  7. March 3, 2015 / 12:53 pm

So exciting that you are starting your 5K training – I have no doubt that you will see multiple PRs!!!

    • March 4, 2015 / 11:01 pm

Kim, I really hope so! It’s already getting so hot here so I am getting nervous about my chances, but I’ll just work as hard as I can and see what happens!

  8. March 3, 2015 / 3:36 pm

Yay for speedwork & getting faster! I would love to hear about your speedwork as you get into it – I’m always interested in seeing what other people do! And love the “You & Me & the Cat” artwork!

    • March 4, 2015 / 11:03 pm

I knew you would like it πŸ™‚

I’m going to start posting a lot more details about my easy v. speed paces, goals, etc. this training cycle! Tomorrow’s post includes info from my first official speed workout for my spring 5K attempts!

  9. March 3, 2015 / 7:26 pm

I have a hard time doing lunges on run-days, but I’ve officially added them to my non-running days! Jumping lunges hurt my knees :o( You are going to get SO strong and be SO ready for a new 5k PR!!

And yes, it’s been suddenly steamy and humid. My run the other night felt like 10x harder because of the warmer weather.

    • March 4, 2015 / 11:07 pm

Yes exactly! This week I’ve been wondering how I ever ran outdoors through the summer last year when it was in the high 90s/100s every day when I can barely get through the 80s now. I guess from here on out it’ll just get progressively warmer and we’ll get used to it!

Love your dedication and enthusiasm! It’s super contagious. You’re going to kick butt on those 5K’s. I desperately need to incorporate some core work into my workout. But I’m afraid to try anything new until the marathon which is in 2 weeks (yikes!).

    LOVE the art!!

    • March 4, 2015 / 11:07 pm

      Thanks Irene!

TWO WEEKS!! Let the countdown begin! You have to let me know how it goes!

  11. March 3, 2015 / 8:55 pm

Yay, speedwork! I’m looking forward to reading about your 5k training cycle. It’s sort of unfamiliar territory for me, so I think I’m going to learn a lot from you.

    • March 4, 2015 / 11:09 pm

It’s definitely unfamiliar territory for me too. I have never trained specifically for a 5K PR before! So far, so good, but then again I’ve only done one speed workout so far :).

  12. March 4, 2015 / 5:50 am

Beautiful moonshot – but ugh to humidity. I am looking forward to warmer weather here in DC, but not so much the humidity. The decoration is adorable… I think I may run my Virtual 10K this weekend… will see!

    • March 4, 2015 / 11:09 pm

Good luck if you run the 10K this weekend!

I’ve been loving receiving everyone’s results. I need to post an update on the race soon!

  13. March 4, 2015 / 7:31 am

It’s so nice you have a place you can do evening runs πŸ™‚
I love the decorating! I need to do my virtual race soon.

    • March 4, 2015 / 11:10 pm

I do feel really lucky to have a great place to do runs in the dark …. and that I live someplace where there are always lots of other runners out!

Can’t wait to hear back from you about how your virtual race goes! πŸ™‚

  14. March 4, 2015 / 10:36 am

That photo is so cute haha πŸ˜€

March 22 – that’s so close!:D I’ll keep all my fingers crossed for you that day πŸ˜€

  15. March 4, 2015 / 5:32 pm

    I’ll see you in Chicago!!!!!

  16. March 5, 2015 / 8:56 am

I’m excited to follow your 5k training! Thanks for the info about those 5 exercises. I think I want to start doing them too!

    • March 6, 2015 / 12:55 pm

My coach only has me doing them after easy runs, but they’re a nice little way to end the workout!
