Marathon Training Update: 15 Miles!

15 miles. 24K. CHECK.

The run went about as perfectly as I could have hoped for!

In my training log to my coach I wrote, “I think I could have run another mile… but I was also happy to be done.”


I ended up running 13 miles on the treadmill and only 2 miles outdoors due to high temps. I was in a nice groove on the treadmill so I didn’t mind.

I quite literally felt like I was getting stronger as the run went on. Awesome feeling.

The playlist I put together may have helped. It’s not the kind you’d listen to while taking a child to pre-school, but it’s perfect if you need to borrow a bit of energy and ego from the artist! : )

I snuck this song onto the playlist, because why not?!

When I woke up on Saturday my feet and hips were a bit sore. I’ve never had achy feet before. (Could have been because I wore my old sneakers, thinking the new ones might not be broken in enough for a long run yet).

I haven’t been sore the day after a long run in a while. It reminded me of how I would always wake up sore when I was training for my first half marathon.

The dull aches made me smile because I know my body is becoming stronger by taking on new running challenges! Someday 15 miles will feel like a breeze! (I hope!)

Before the run, I stopped into Marshall’s and Target to treat myself to a couple of new running things (hey, I’m in pre-birthday mode, remember? 😀 )

Cecil wasn’t impressed. In fact he seemed to really hate the socks!

I got everything you see for less than $35 which is AWESOME but man do I hate stores like Marshall’s. The disorganization is a killer!

A quick Cecil update: he’s been on his healthy eating plan (it’s a lifestyle change, not a diet! haha) for about a month now. He’s still not happy about it and lets me know frequently by meowing at the treat drawer.

I’ve tried to tell him the vet said he can only have 2 treats per day now, but he thinks I’m just being mean. Sigh. Being a parent is hard! haha

    Woohoo to 15 miles!!! I think you deserve you own special award for doing T13 of them on them on the TM!!!

    Cecil is adorable!

    We are getting a Marshalls here in Halifax soon. I’ve never been to one! I’m excited 😀

      Thank you! It was my longest treadmill run EVER! I didn’t even think of that until just now 😉 New PR lol

      You can find a lot of great deals at Marshalls (the running tops are usually only like $7-10!!!)! The 3 pack of Nike socks I got was only $4!

    Way to go on your long run! I can’t imagine the heat and humidity there…I did 13.5 yesterday…5.25 in am and 8.25 pm…tired legs today! I think I am going for a bike ride today to cross train. When is your marathon? mine is Oct. 27…

      How are you liking the split long runs? Is it hard to get out there for the second leg?

        I definitely see how it is training me to run on tired legs (and is REALLY good training for the ragnar I am doing in September). Surprisingly, my second run splits are faster on my second run than on my first. The bad points–I kind of feel like it eats up my day, and I hate having to wash my hair 2xs in one day (such a girly complaint, I know…) Is it harder going out the second time? Not really, I have been blessed that whenever it has been on the schedule, it has been a BEAUTIFUL day. It would be more difficult if it was on a really hot day. It rotates weekly, a split run then just a long run…So far, so good!

    Kick butt girl! 13 miles…so two hoursish on the TM and I am struggling to just stay on hour lol I ran 9 miles Sat. but it wasn’t pretty, the slowest 9 I’ve ever done, but at least I kept moving. You know I have never felt like anything over 8 is a breeze lol Cheers to getting stronger! My Otto does the same thing rolls all over anything i bring home 🙂

      I started out by watching an episode of Chopped which is 60 mins so that really helped the time roll by at the beginning!

      Cecil immediately gets on top of everything new that comes in the house, but he went nuts over the socks! He ripped the tags off and was chewing the socks! I think his “lifestyle change” (being down to 2 treats a day) is making him a bit cranky lol

    Way to dominate. 15 miles and you could keep going?? That’s awesome. Still can’t believe you did 13 on the treadmill, that is impossible for me. I agree the day after soreness is a great feeling.

    I threw down 15 on Sat as well, just following your lead lol.

      I think doing the majority of the run on the treadmill REALLY helped! The AC is a wonderful thing!!

    I was checking back here all weekend to see how your 15 went. I’m glad you KILLED it. I love that Miami song. Marshall’s is an awesome store for running clothes. Both of my running jackets that I wear when it is below zero degrees wind chill are from Marshalls- a steal at $38 a piece!

      OMG running in below zero. I would DIE!!!! Literally pass out and die.

      How do you keep your eyes open?? The cold makes my eyes water like crazy. I just imagine myself crying ice cycles!

    CONGRATS on 15 miles! So excited for you that you rocked it! I did 16 this weekend which was a distance PR for me. Can you believe our mileages are starting to get this HIGH? 26.2 becomes more real every week. We’re gonna CRUSH this!

      You are right, the marathon does feel REAL now! Even after I signed up to run a marathon, I don’t think it ever quite clicked in my head how many miles I would be running. it’s crazy… and awesome!

      Hahah yes, the playlist! Lots of throwback songs! I remember hearing the censored versions on TRL back in the day. One of the songs SHOCKED me with how much profanity was in it lol

    Nice job on the 15 miles! I thought that was a pretty intimidating long run distance for marathon training, exceeding half distance for the first time.

    I did 10 miles for my “long” run this weekend, but broken into three runs, to simulate Hood to Coast (that’s my goal running race for the summer). My legs were so tired by the third one!

      I cannot imagine breaking a long run down into three segments! I think I could probably force myself to get back out there for a second one, but I don’t know about the third!

    Nice job, lady!!! I remember my 15 miler last year…I felt like if I HAD to I could do the whole 26.2…I was tired/wanted it to end, but I also felt GREAT. It was also the first time I tried an ice bath because, like you said, my feet hurt after, which had never happened before. I think long runs are when the runner’s high hits you while you’re still running, instead of after! You are KILLING your training!

    I love/hate Marshall’s/TJ Maxx, too. So little organization, so many choices!

      Towards the end when I was wondering if I wanted to go for the extra mile or not I did start wondering if I could do the full 26.2 that day. I think it would have involved a lot of walking towards the end, but I think I could have gotten it done. I was really surprised at how much energy and pep in my legs I still had.

      I remember when you did 15 and 17 miles last summer too! At that time I couldn’t have even begun to imagine running that many miles. You were killing it before the foot issue, which means you’ll rock training this time!

    Congrats on your 15 miles of awesomeness this weekend!! Sounds like everything went as planned and you felt great. Pretty soon those 15-milers will be second nature. I did a 16-mile trail run this weekend and it seemed like just another run. Crazy how that happens when you get into those higher miles. Running a half marathon on the treadmill is quite impressive…

    My cat loves when I go shopping so he can curl up in my purchases and play around in the empty bags. He LOVES bags and boxes. 🙂

      Cecil loves bags too! He gets all up in the reusable cloth bags and I can tote him around the house on my shoulder lol

      Agreed! This was my first new playlist since JANUARY! The “new” music really helped!

      It’s so hard to put a pet on a diet. I wish I could just explain to him what’s going on!

    I had an 11-miler yesterday and now I’m dealing with major foot pain! I have no idea what I did, but I’m hoping some rest will fix it! I will never understand how you run more than a mile on the treadmill, I don’t have the patience or attention span haha

    WooHoo — great job on that 15 mile run!! Isn’t it crazy to think that now you can run these distances with just minimal soreness?! Awesome!!!
    I like TJ Maxx but Marshalls causes me some stress – I don’t like trying to dig through stuff!!!
    Love that Cecil has made a lifestyle change – so cool.
