Monday Morning Update!
If you celebrated Thanksgiving last week I hope you had a great day! We spent the day with Adam’s family where I ate so much turkey that I napped through the afternoon football games and dessert! Can you believe no one woke me up for pie? They must not love me very much.
Friday I opted out of all shopping activities and instead got outside for a nice, windy run.
When I got home I found Cecil laying on the couch like this – what a weirdo! ?
Saturday I did a four mile run/walk on the treadmill (because my right hip was bothering me), and some strength training before DATE NIGHT! Adam and I went to see Creed at the dine-in theater. If you’re not familiar, it’s the latest movie in the Rocky series.
I thought it was really good – very emotional – but Adam thought it was just okay. He said there were too many story lines jammed together and none of them got properly explored. I agree with that but I bet they’re just setting us up for the next movie.
Sunday was all about football as usual. I woke up with a pounding headache so I slept in until 11am… and then I took a nap. Not going to lie, all that sleep actually left me feeling pretty good.
When I finally got out for my long run/walk in the evening I had quite a bit of energy at the start.
Fighting against the wind definitely was a challenge. I ended up flipping my Garmin around so I could run by feel. You can definitely tell which miles I was running into the wind vs. which miles I had the wind at my back.
Since I did run/walk to baby my hip I had a good amount of energy still left in the tank at the end. My hip isn’t hurting me or anything like that, it’s just really tight.
I’m probably babying it too much at this point… but I don’t care. I don’t want to have to take any more time off from training this year. At this point I’d rather keep on with the run/walk and run lower mileage than sit on the sidelines!
Week 1 of A1A Half Marathon Training:
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: 2 miles @ 13:14 | 73*F, 31mph gusts of wind
Wednesday: 2 miles @ 13:06 | 75*F, 29mph gusts of wind
Thursday: Rest
Friday: 5K @ 13:43 | 77*F, windy, right hip feeling tight
Saturday: 4 miles run/walk @ 15:10 | treadmill, hip still tight
Sunday: 8 miles run/walk @ 14:36 | 77*F, windy, hip still tight
Total: 19.1 miles @ 13:57
I didn’t hit the mileage total that I wanted to for this week, but I’m telling myself it’s not a bad week one. It was definitely a confidence boosting week for me in that I finished my 8-miler with plenty left to give – of course I’m sure the run/walk had a lot to do with that. Even so, my hope for the Cape Coral half is to finish at least one minute per mile faster than I finished the Michelob Ultra half earlier this month.
That was a really humbling race for me, but I don’t think it was a true indicator of where I’m at. I built a nice base during marathon training, and although I had to take a few weeks off from long runs and speed work after Chicago, I know that base is still inside me waiting to be tapped.
If I can improve by a minute per mile for Cape Coral, then I think I’ll feel confident enough to run Miami using the same pacing strategy I used to get my PR in January. After that I hope I’ll have the confidence and the training to go after a new PR at A1A in February.
That’s my thought process right now anyway, we’ll see how it goes!
On a scale of 1-10 how do you feel about your training last week?
Is it snowing where you are?
PS: Vlogmas starts tomorrow 🙂 New vlogs every other day!
Sounds like you are being really smart about your hip! Better to be careful than to push it. The wind can be so rough, but at least you get those nice beach views while you run:)

I CAN’T WAIT FOR VLOGMAS!!! I am going to watch your Vlogs while I eat my lunch. It will be just what I need before facing the rest of the long afternoon of work.
The pic of Cecil is priceless. It looks like he is mid stretch!
My week was good in that I had a good speed work session and lifted 2-3 times, but the rest of my running was recovery. I was just feeling pokey. I even pushed off my 10 miler until today!

Hahah great, I’m glad at least one person will watch the videos 😉
He does look mid-stretch except he wasn’t, he was just chilling like that! I’ve never seen him do it before, but I thought it was adorable!
I’m impressed that you can get in a 10-miler on a weekday! That would be way too much for me to handle before or after work! I need to be able to nap after a long run, haha
We had off Monday! That’s why I did 10 that day. 10 is too much during the week for me too!

Overall I think my training last week would have maybe been 5/10, but I was still pretty sick in the early part of the week. Once I was feeling better I got in some decent runs that I feel really good about. So I am going to ignore the sick part and give myself I 7/10. Even though I ran 3 times, I still skipped my strength training.
I think taking it easy on your hip is a smart idea. Better to be just a little bit too cautious then to cause a major setback because you wanted to push in during the first week.

Oh no! I’m sorry to hear you were sick for a couple of days, but I’m glad you got better quickly! Hey, a 7/10 sounds really good to me after being down and out for a couple of days!!
Good job on your training. It sounds like you had a relaxing weekend. I have been doing so-so with running. We are moving the 11th, so I have been busy packing etc. I am ready for snow, but we don’t have any yet!

A friend of mine was in the middle of moving last week and I told her that it’s good strength training! Picking up and moving boxes around sounds like a good way to get a sneaky workout in! 😉
I think it’s definitely the right call to baby your hip if it isn’t feeling completely right. It isn’t snowing where I am yet thankfully! After the winter we had last year, I would not be the least upset if I didn’t see a single snowflake all season.

Awwww I am really hoping to see a couple of snowflakes this year when I’m up in NY! Just a couple of them will make for a good Instagram picture LOL 😀
You had a good week! I wouldn’t worry about using intervals at all. Depending on how foot does I will go with the same strategy in December if I need to!
Cecil sleep postilions LOL
Gotta love a theater you can get a cocktail in 🙂

Thanks, Karen! For so long I was obsessed with moving away from run/walk but after all of my set-backs this year I’m definitely of the mind that run/walk is better than no run at all!!!!
Oh man, I love the dine-in theater so much! They charge an arm and a leg, but it’s so relaxing to kick back, have a drink and watch a good movie in big comfy seats!
I think you are wise to take it very easy on your hip. There is no reason to overly strain and risk further injury.
I can’t believe you missed pie! I would be so mad! I missed pie this year as well, but it wasn’t for a nap. We did a potluck thanksgiving and the person who promised pie got sick and didn’t make it. Fortunately the rest of the food was delicious, so I just had an extra helping of the main meal instead.

Hey, an extra helping of the main meal sounds like a good Plan B to me! I definitely enjoyed some left overs as my dessert later in the night 🙂
Great week, pain free is always a huge win. Training last week was about a 7. Had a couple good runs but def had too much R&R lol
Running Schlub recently posted…You Have to Break it Down
NO WAY! After a marathon you earned that R&R, especially during a holiday week!!!! 🙂
I can’t believe you slept through the PIE!!! You must have been napping like a champ (or, like Cecil).
That was smart of you to flip your watch around and not focus on pace running in the wind. I have never thought to do that. I’ll have to experiment on the next windy day. We have tons of snow right now. I had to put screws in the bottom of my shoes in order to run outside.
Running continues to get better for me! 🙂

I want to see Creed. I think the new twist on Rocky looks interesting.

No it’s not snowing here. I can barely get out the door when the temps are in the upper 40’s. I’m a total WIMP! I can’t wait to see CREED, I know i’m going to love it.

I think you’re doing awesome! Sounds like you’re doing the exact right thing with being overly cautious and taking care of your hip…finishing a longer run with gas still left in the tank is HUGE. Also…if I slept through pie I would’ve been soooo mad! 😉

Great first week of training! Really smart to baby your hip. Better to do that at the beginning of training so you can have a strong training cycle. This is the first year that I can remember where we haven’t had any snow yet! We are supposed to get some tonight but no accumulation. Happy December!
