My Dietitian is Sending Me to the Doctor

I did a bad thing over the weekend. I didn’t go grocery shopping. This is bad because I pretty much ran out of dinner ingredients after cooking on Sunday.

I told myself it was fine. That I would just go after work on Monday, but after work I did not want to go grocery shopping. Big surprise!! Who else is shocked?

Adam and I live in walking distance of a grocery store, so I just nipped over and picked up just enough ingredients to make chicken and veggies for one night.

I told myself I would place an order with our grocery delivery service on Tuesday morning. That would mean by Tuesday evening when I got home from work I’d have all the groceries I needed for the week.

Unfortunately I forgot to place the order. So when I was driving home yesterday I really needed to stop at the store and do a full shop. But instead I pulled into Fresh Market.

The Fresh Market near my house caters to the young professional crowd. It’s really small and mostly just has freshly prepared ingredients that you can whip together fast — freshly chopped veggies, freshly prepared meats. It’s expensive but convenient.

You definitely can’t do a full food shop there unless you’re willing to spend $100 on three days worth of meals.

Okay that may be an exaggeration but it’s probably also pretty close to accurate.

In addition to prepared foods and pre-chopped fruit and veg, they also carry tons of things that you don’t need. But that you probably want.

Skipping the candy for me is easy, but the little coffee bar was calling my name last night.

It’s just so hard for me to say no to hazlenut coffee. Is there anything like that you have trouble saying no to? As soon as I smell it I just gotta have it!

Mmmmmm #heaven.

I ended up picking up some turkey burgers and some veggies for dinner.

I have been eating really healthy ever since I started working with a dietitian again earlier this year. The frustrating thing is that even though I eat clean over 80% of the time I’m not losing weight like both I and my dietitian think I should be.

I’ve been keeping a photo food log for her and she approves of what I’m eating and yet I have actually gained 1lb over the last couple of weeks… and I’m constantly feeling super bloated. (I know the 1lb could be nothing, but nothing isn’t exactly what I want either.)

My dietitian wants me to go get my free T3 levels checked to see if my thyroid is out of balance. She said last time I had the test done they checked T4 and TSH. So back to the doctor I will go.

I feel like I have spent more time this year in the doctor’s office than ever before.

I used to just go once a year for my annual woman’s exam and that was it, unless I caught a cold or something. I definitely used to have anxiety about seeing the doctor, getting blood drawn, having tests done, etc. but as of this year I feel like I am a pro at it!

I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or not. Maybe this is just what being 30 is like :).

BTW 28 days until I can finally have the compartment syndrome test done. Not that I’m counting or anything!

How often do you grocery shop?

I love Fresh Market but definitely spend too much money there! I cant say no to chocolate covered pistachios:) I have spent a ridiculous amount on doctors this year. It depresses me to think about it!

    1. Kristina

Ohhh I’ve never tried choc covered pistachios – those sound amazing! May need to pick up a scoop next time I am there :).

I totally get it, the amount of money I’ve spent and anticipate spending, on doctors visits this year is unreal!

You could be on to something. I often think I must be crazy because it’s just a number, but I feel like my body has changed since I turned 30. I feel like I need more rest and recovery from running during this training cycle than I ever did during the last ones (granted, hat could be heat related too), and the pounds don’t melt off as easily as they used to. Losing weight really does get harder with age, but we seem so young still!

Good luck at the doctor, and sorry you’ve had to go so often.

WE ARE STILL YOUNG! I keep telling myself that every day, even though it seems like my body is falling apart! 😀

Welcome to 30! I actually noticed more stuff (eyesight getting worse, aches & pains) after 40, but not much. Who knows what 50 will hold next year (eek!). Bummer you are getting so familiar with Dr visits! I just recently saw my family Dr for an annual well check, instead of my OB/GYN and a got a blood test as a result. I haven’t had my cholesterol checked in forever, so hopefully the test won’t result in any surprises! I hope you get your issue straightened out.
We have been going grocery shopping several times a week, which I don’t like. I prefer once a week, but with my husband at home, he goes and gets things he wants, and I’m never ready with my list of things I want, so it’s multiple trips. That feels very disorganized to me!

Fingers crossed on your test results!

In college I used to grocery shop like every day. Now as an adult I prefer to go once a week. Going every day like this is reminding me of being in college!

Good luck at the doctor’s office! It must be so frustrating to be doing everything right and not seeing the results that you and your dietician expect. I’m pretty sure that my struggle to lose weight this summer is directly tied to my inability to say no to craft beer…though I’m sure being in my 30s is not helping anything either.

Hahha I honestly thought maybe I was drinking too much creamer in my milk and that was sneakily adding a million calories, but I cut out creamer and I’m still struggling! Actually I’m going to start adding creamer back in because I miss it and there’s been no difference in my weight since I stopped using it!

Good luck with your tests on your thyroid! My doctor always does a complete blood test + thyroid every year. Never hurts to check!

    1. Kristina

Thanks Susan! I honestly really hope the tests come back and say that something is out of whack so that I have something to point to as the problem!

Well, it sucks that you have to go back to the doctor and that you’re not losing weight like you should be. But I’m glad your nutritionist is smart enough to know when something else could be going on and you are getting it checked out. I am so not familiar with thyroid problems but I know it is a big reason people are sometimes unable to shed weight. Just one more thing for you to deal with. I’m sorry. 🙁

Ah it’s okay! I keep reminding myself that my health woes are like NOTHING compared to what other people are going through. Someone I work with has been dealing with cancer and watching what he’s gone through has made me grateful for my little problems if that makes sense. Grateful probably isn’t the right word but you know what I mean.

I love fresh market! I like things being convenient…I don’t have time to chop and cook lol
I feel your pain about the weight loss, I have more or less given up, it is so hard for me to budge the scale. i am not sure it is worth it anymore. My endocrinologist wants me to stay off meds because i have had stress fractures issues so I got what I got. I started to write about this , but I like to take time to digest how I feel before I write things out. It is very hard and it can be discouraging but it also can flip. I have lost the weight a few times and it is just so restrictive I can’t sustain it…
Hang in there and see what they say and who knows maybe you will start to see some changes soon!

    1. Kristina

Hahahha I don’t have time to chop either. Even when I buy from Publix or TJ’s I buy pre-chopped. We wouldn’t have been good cave women :).

I’m sorry that you’re strugging with some weight related issues as well. The good news is that there is SO MUCH MORE that we have going for us! We’re smart, we’re funny and we are great cat moms! 😀

I’m sorry to hear that you have to keep visiting the doctor! It sounds very frustrating!

At 34, I can tell you that many things in your body change from your 20s. I was listening to the Menopause podcast on Another Mother Runner, and it seems that things just get worst later on…

I love Fresh Market!! but only go there for desserts, and madelines.

I hope you make it to the grocery store this week!
