My Final PR Attempt of 2014 Will Be in the 5K!

Can we talk about the 5K for a minute?

It’s just 3.1 miles of hell, right?

A couple of weeks ago Adam and I signed up to do a Jingle Bell 5K the weekend before Christmas.

It’s a convenient race for us because the start and finish line are both within walking distance of our house, and it seems kind of fun because a lot of people will be dressed up as Santa for the race!

Screen Shot 2014-12-07 at 7.42.56 PM

In fact, instead of giving out t-shirts at packet pickup, all participants will receive a Santa costume to run the race in!Β

I won’t be dressingΒ up as Santa though because I’ll be gunning for a final new PR to close out 2014.

December in Fort Lauderdale can be brutally hot so I’m not sure if I would be wearing the Santa suit anyway, but IΒ hope other people do! πŸ™‚

I’m excited to be running another race with Adam – the last 5K he did with me was back in February. (I am using the phrase “with me” loosely since he runs at about 8 minute pace and of course… I do not!)

I’m not excited because it’s a 5K! I don’t think any other race distance intimidates me as much! I don’t do any specific training for 5Ks other than the speedwork that I do in general so it’s just sort of like tackling a race on the fly.

The last 5K I did was in September and my (positive) splits were as follows:

Mile 1– 12:05
Mile 2 – 12:33
Mile 3 – 12:58

My finishing time was 38:53 which was a 15 second PR.

Screen-Shot-2014-09-21-at-10.22.41-AM

When I cross the finishing line at the Jingle Bell Jog I hope to PR byΒ at least a minute (as always my goal will be to get as close to 36:00 as possible),Β and of course I hope my splits are moreΒ negative than positive :).

When I ran the 5K in September I was at the very end of marathon training. The weekend prior I had run my 20-miler and the day before the 5K I had run 12 miles. Β This time I’ll be going into theΒ 5K with fresher legs which gives me hope!

I’m writing all of this now a good two weeks in advance to psych myself up for the race.

I’M RUNNING A 5K AND I’M GOING TO PR!

We gotta close out the year with a bang, right?

Are you working towards a final fitness goal for 2014?Β

Have you figured out your goals for 2015 yet? Too early to talk about that?

PS: Congrats to Kristen for earning a shiny new marathon PR at CIM yesterday and congrats to my coach for coming in first place female at her half marathon over the weekend! Way to kick butt!

OMGracious…the 5k…it is a bad distance for me!! If someone tells me to go run 10 miles at a pace just fast enough that will be worn out when done and not have much left….I am game!!! If someone says go run 3.1 as fast as you can….ummmm…..yeah. I would rather not!! It hurts soooo much!!! haha!! You will do great in your race! You “should” be surround by jolly santa looking people and have a blast while PR’ing like crazy! You have had some really great runs recently so you should KNOW that you have this in the bag!!!

I am sooooooooo on board with running 10 moderate miles instead of 3 fast miles! I am really interested to see how many people dress up as Santa though. I think this could be a really fun(ny) race!

Must be fun for people to watch – a bunch of santas running around haha πŸ˜€
Sounds like the perfect way to end the year πŸ˜€ Much luck! <3 I know you'll do great :D!

I know! I might have to get someone to come spectate and take video, if the majority of people do dress up it’s going to be so funny/cute! πŸ™‚

      Thank you!

Last year I did the same thing… I signed up for a 5k in December with the hopes to finish out the year strong…and I did! Such a good feeling! You will do great in your 5k!!

Whooo! I hope I can channel you on race day and hit the finish line strong!

GOOD LUCK YOU’LL DO AMAZING! …I now really really really want to find a Santa 5K because that sounds hilarious.
2015 goal = stay in injury free and run my first marathon in March!

You will knock that 2015 goal out the park! You have been soo so so dedicated to your cross training and esp. strength training and stretching since you started running again! It’s inspiring!

  5. Jennifer

Yessss your description of a 5K is accurate! That is hilarious… can you take a picture of the Santa outfits even though you are not running in them – ahah that is amazing. My last run will be a 5 miler in 2 weeks with J&A – not sure if I want to race it or enjoy the lights.. hmmmmm.

I will definitely snap some pics before and after the race! Hopefully I can get someone to come and take video too, I bet it will be really funny and cute if a lot of people dress up! I’m worried not a lot of people will though if its like 85 degrees on race day :/. Hopefully we’ll have really nice weather!

  6. Hanna

Good luck! I know you can do it!!

5Ks intimidate me too. You have to run so FAST. Everyone thinks, oh, 3 miles, piece of cake, but it’s actually really difficult because you have to start out going fast and basically just hold on for dear life. Longest 3 miles ever!

2 little words make all the difference in 5Ks: WARM UP. Warm up warm up warm up. Since you have to start out fast, you’ll need a good warm up. 10 minutes of jogging before hand, some strides, and some dynamic stretching, skipping, lunge jumps, etc.

My 2015 goals are taking shape, I hope to talk about them more next week! πŸ™‚

Exactly! Last time I ran a 5K and I hit mile 2 I was like, “that’s it? still one super long mile to go? I hope I make it!” Nothing like a 5K to make you feel like you’ll never run a long run ever again!

I’m all about the warm up! I usually run an easy mile before the race!

  7. Maureen

I’ll be running that 5k too! Maybe we’ll run into each other πŸ™‚ You’re gonna kill it!

    1. Kristina @ Blog About Running

Nice! I’ll be sure to look for you. You’ll be the one in the red suede suit right? πŸ˜‰

  8. Jess

You are totally going to get that PR! πŸ™‚ 5Ks are honestly the worst. I never feel completely warmed up, even if I run for my warm-up and do lots of mobility stretches. Yet I come back to this distance a lot. Part of it is that there are a lot more 5Ks than 10Ks and half marathons!

Plus, it’ll be fun to have Adam running with you. Hope you’ll get some great photos in the process!

I know exactly what you mean. For every longer distance race there are a handful of 5Ks. I just don’t love racing or the distance enough to sign up for many of them. This will only be my third 5K of the year!

When Adam runs with me it does give me extra incentive to push the pace since I know he’ll be waiting for me at the finish line and I don’t want him to have to wait for too long! πŸ™‚

  9. Courtney @ Running For Cupcakes

That’s so fun that they give you Santa suits instead of a t-shirt. I don’t think I would like to run in it either! You’re going to do amazing and kill this 5k!!

Well that and the Believe journal that apparently every single other person in the world has!!! I saw yours this morning on Insta. I am now officially the only runner without one!

  11. running schlub

I wouldn’t be able to run in that suit either. I know you are going to kill that 5k and it will be the prefect way to close out 2014.

No goals for end of year, we have the marathon in February and this is the year of the podium so I need to train hard.
running schlub recently posted…Strong Race But Need to Stay The CourseMy Profile

    1. Kristina @ Blog About Running

Right? I can’t imagine how easily you can overheat in that suit! I think this race concept works better for cold weather states! But it will still be amusing to see if lots of people do turn up in costume!

  12. Karen

I love it!! Close out the year with a bang πŸ™‚ You can do this. Have you gone out and just ran as hard as you could without stopping for a mile or two? I tend to go for some fast miles randomly because I often run a mile or two to warm up before a weight lifting session and when I know I am only going that far I try to push. This helps me to keep a handle on how tired i will feel at what speed, just in case I decide to run a 5K. I actually love 5k’s.

    1. Kristina @ Blog About Running

The last time I just ran flat out as hard as possible for a full mile was back in maybe early 2013. But I do get in some speedy miles during speedwork, so I feel pretty confident about getting the PR this month! I know I can’t sustain 8 or 9 minute pace like during speedwork sprints, but I do think 12 minute pace should be doable if I don’t act like a baby (which I am prone to doing lol)! πŸ™‚

  13. Amy

WooHoo! I love your attitude lately! You are going to rock it, lady! Will you at least wear a red or green sparkly skirt to get in the holiday spirit among all the Santas around you? haha.

Oh good call! I should order a red or green sparkle skirt for the race!

I’ve been thinking I could probably pin the Santa hat to my head, but I’m worried my head would overheat!

  14. cheryl

The 5k is a beast! WARM UP! I can feel a new PR! Plus you will be chased by SO MANY Santas!

Isn’t that so funny? Chased by a bunch of Santas!!! HHAA!!

  15. Megan @ Meg Go Run

GO YOU!!! At first I was like, wait, what about the half? Then I realized that is in 2015! That is hilarious about the santa costume- I hope a lot of people wear it too! It would be funny to see a bunch of santas running down the street.

And I looove the Santa idea. So much fun. It would be better in a colder part of the country though.

  17. jessica

Oh and btw. Forgot to mention that i am TOTALLY intimidated by the 5k also. Even though I’ve ran more than any other race distance. But it’s just too quick for me.!!

  18. Jenn @ Running on Lentils

Yay! I bet you’ll knock that PR out of the water! Great way to end the year, too. 5Ks pretty much terrify me too. I’ve been debating and debating doing one more…it’s this Saturday so I have to decide soon. Gulp.

I know that you are going to PR in the 5K – in fact, I think you are going to surprise yourself and get way under your 36:00 minute goal!!!
