My First Video Update & Other Stuff

Hey! GREAT NEWS over here, we *finally* got our Internet hooked up at the new apartment so I am back in business on the blog!

It’s been so weird living without Internet! It was like I traveled back to the mid 90s.

When I last posted a million years ago (or two days ago) Meg asked what the gym is like at my new apartment complex…. it’s pretty awesome!

I made a little video tour so you can see it:

This is the first video I’ve ever made in iMovie so please, please, please be gentle!

I know it looks like a second grader filmed and put it together 🙂 . I promise I will get better because learning video editing is one of my top creative and professional goals for this year!

On the running front everything had been going great until my long run this weekend. I aggravated my calf strain and now I feel like I’m back to square one there. The Miami Half is only a couple of weeks away now so this whole situation is really frustrating.

I’m going to take it easy for a couple of days and hopefully I can be back to running easy SOON! I want to be in tip top condition for the race later this month.

If you have any advice for speeding up recovery for calf strains I am all ears!

On the pet front… we had a minor setback on Monday when Duke barked at Cecil )we think because he is scared of Cecil/all cats). Yesterday when I got home from work I did a lot of training with the two of them and we made a ton of progress!

Now Duke no longer shows signs of being scared when Cecil is around. He also learned the “look at me” command which will be handy not just for cat training but in lots of other situations. I am thinking about signing him up for basic obedience classes soon.

Did you take your dog to obedience classes?

What’s one thing you wish your gym had/offered?

I love KT tape when I am nursing an injury. It is not a cure all but helped me a lot!! I would love to have a gym near where I live! I have to drive 20 minutes to the closest one…boo!
Glad to hear you are being able to resolve the little issues between Cecil and Duke now so they aren’t long lasting!!

    • January 7, 2015 / 7:42 am

Thanks for the KT tape tip! I’ve never tried it before but have heard good things. I’m skeptical about the science behind it (because I am skeptical about everything, hahaha) but I may need to give it a try!

  2. January 6, 2015 / 6:36 am

I took my pups to training. I can’t say enough good things about it. It really helps, and the key is consistency! I had a trainer come out to the house once a week.
I hope your calf feels better soon! That is great that you have such a nice gym in your complex. Makes my treadmill in the basement look like, well, a treadmill in the basement!

    • January 7, 2015 / 7:43 am

Hey, having a treadmill in the basement is awesome! During a hard speedwork session you can make all the loud noises/complaints/grunts you want without judgement! haha

  3. January 6, 2015 / 7:53 am

Oh no! The calf monster strikes again!

Remember when I went through this in the fall? Arg, very aggravating but hopefully you’ll be as lucky as I was and it will go away on its own. The key for me was REST. I took a whole week off from exercise period. I stretched my calf regularly. When I finally ran again, I just did an easy 3 miler, listened to my body, and cooled down with lots of calf stretching afterwards.

Best of luck healing!! I’ll think of you. When is your half? I also have a half coming up this month.

    • January 7, 2015 / 7:44 am

I am hoping it will go away on its own! My coach is having me take a week off of running completely and we’ll re-evaluate from there.

The Miami Half is Jan 25th!

  4. January 6, 2015 / 8:07 am

That is an amazeballs gym! In your apartment complex!! I am totally jealous. Every apartment ‘gym’ I’ve ever had before has had one treadmill, one old bike, maybe one elliptical, and a small set of weights. Yours is great! I loved the video! I’ll look forward to many more! 🙂

    • January 7, 2015 / 7:45 am

What your describing is exactly what my old apartment gym was like…. although I loved it! There’s something nice about a small gym that I really find comforting!

  5. January 6, 2015 / 8:19 am

Wow the gym looks awesome. I think the video came out great for your first one, much better than my bouncing trail videos lol.

Hope your calf gets better soon, rest us definitely the best remedy. Ah the kids are acting up already. We had the same issue when we brought dog #2 into the house. They still squabble here and there, I think it’s normal but it sounds like you two are on top of it.

    • January 7, 2015 / 7:45 am

I like your bouncing trail videos because of all the action shots! Plus I don’t have that terrain here so it’s awesome to see!

  6. January 6, 2015 / 8:38 am

Girl, that gym is fab! I’m so jealous!

For a calf strain I’d say some deep tissue massage (or foam rolling) and anti-inflammatory medicine definitely help. Fingers crossed it’s better ASAP for the Miami Half!

    • January 7, 2015 / 7:46 am

Thanks Amanda! I have not taken any anti-inflammatories but I should do that. I’m weird though, even when I have a headache I don’t take Advil. I’m just not a big pill popper hahahah

  7. January 6, 2015 / 9:12 am

Sorry to hear about your calf! Take it easy and hopefully it wont be a big issue!
Isnt it so weird to not have internet? It makes me realize how much I am dependent on it!

    • January 7, 2015 / 7:47 am

Yes! It really did make me realize how often I use it! Our phones weren’t able to get signal for the first couple of days as well so I couldn’t even pick up my phone to check on things! It was so weird!

  8. January 6, 2015 / 9:23 am

Oh no, so sorry to hear about your calf strain. I’ve dealt with the same thing and the key was lots of rest and taking a break from running. I did do some swimming though, I believe.
    Hope you’ll heal up quickly!

    • January 7, 2015 / 7:48 am

Thanks Liv, I think you’re right about needing rest. I’m going to take a full week of rest from running and hopefully get back on track next week. I am looking forward to using the new pool for some pool running!

  9. January 6, 2015 / 9:43 am

Awesome gym! The treadmills are great 🙂 Glad you got settled into your home. If things have been that smooth between Duke and Cecil I am sure it will be okay:0) I never did classes with my doggie, but would probably be fun.
Stay off that leg a few days at least. I know it stinks, but being off my leg all that time I was sick really did help, it was like 5 or 6 days and I noticed a big improvement in the pain I was having. Hope you feel better soon!

    • January 7, 2015 / 7:49 am

      Thanks Karen!

5 and 6 days seems like such a long time, hahaha. I am going to take a full week of rest from running though and hopefully I’ll be better after that. I can definitely see how continuing to run set me back!

  10. January 6, 2015 / 9:51 am

Your gym is WONDERFUL!!! Thanks for the video- I look forward to more!

I am sorry to hear about the calf strain. Calves are the one thing I have never injured but I am sure my day is coming. You are smart to rest!

I have friends who took their dogs to obedience training and rave about it! I used to watch a show on the Animal Planet channel… it was about dog training and a lady would come into your house and train your dog for you. Fascinating stuff, and the main takeaway was how dogs love routine, love to know who is in charge (Cecil!? hahaa) etc, etc.

    • January 7, 2015 / 7:50 am

The thing about the calf is that it doesn’t feel like a real injury. I don’t know if that makes any sense at all…. like when I am running it hurts but it’s not a sharp pain more of a dull pain that I *could* ignore if I wanted to with some distractions. I know that would be dumb though, so rest it is!

      • January 7, 2015 / 11:50 am

I know what you mean- I hate describing minor aches and pains as “injuries”. When I think injury, I think it means I’m going to be out for awhile, not just resting for a couple days.

  11. January 6, 2015 / 5:09 pm

Sorry to hear about your calf strain 🙁 Hope it feels better after a couple days of Miami (cue Will Smith’s song…I do that no matter what).

Your apartment gym is amazing!! Everything looks new and modern. I also liked the captioning you entered “Yayy” haha 🙂

    • January 7, 2015 / 1:05 pm

Hahahah when I was getting ready to move to Miami in 2006 I used to listen to the song on repeat all day and night!

I will definitely add it to my race playlist!

  12. January 6, 2015 / 6:08 pm

Oh no! Sorry to hear about your calf strain. I imagine icing, resting, and compression would work here too.

That looks like an awesome gym for an apartment complex! Much bigger than most I’ve seen, and ideal for when the weather is just too hot or humid (or when you want to take speedwork into the A/C).

Yikes! Glad Duke has learned a new command that will prove useful to you. I hope Cecil and Duke are getting along better since then.

    • January 7, 2015 / 1:07 pm

I think you are right, I’ve gotta be all about RICE this week so that I can toe the starting line in a couple of weeks at the Miami Half!

The gym is really awesome and modern. The gym we had at our old place was nice but small and somewhat outdated. This one brings together the best of everything — new gym equipment like the big chains but no crowding since it’s just for our complex!

  13. January 6, 2015 / 6:45 pm

    Your voice is adorable!

That sucks about your calf strain. I wonder what’s going on…do you need new shoes maybe??

    • January 7, 2015 / 1:09 pm

      My voice! Ugh!

I actually just got new shoes in December (same ones I always wear, just new). I think I might have actually tweaked the muscle at the 5K last month and it’s just gotten worse since then since I didn’t take time off. At first the twinge was so acute I just ignored it, which is just never a good idea!

  14. January 6, 2015 / 8:21 pm

That gym looks great! I like the idea of video updates from time to time.

I’ve never dealt with a calf strain, but my go-to for running injuries is ice massage. I fill a little dixie cup with water and freeze it and then use it to massage the sore spot. The ice both helps reduce the inflammation and the pain while you’re massaging. If I’m being really good I’ll foam roll before I do the ice massage. It seems to help the random sore spots that pop up.

    • January 7, 2015 / 1:09 pm

Oh I love the dixie cup idea, I’ve never done that before but will give it a shot tonight. Thank you!

  15. January 6, 2015 / 9:22 pm

Wow that gym is awesome!!! We have the dinkiest of dinky gyms at our place. I would love a place like that for when it rains or is too hot to go outside!

    • January 7, 2015 / 1:10 pm

The treadmill is just really really amazing. It has more tv stations than we get in the apartment! LOL

  16. January 7, 2015 / 8:12 am

Wow – that is an awesome gym!!! I love that all of the cardio equipment is facing out a window!!!
And, I saw a BOSU and stability ball!!:)
I hope that you don’t have any problems with Duke & Cecil!!!

    • January 7, 2015 / 1:11 pm

YES! As soon as I saw the bosu ball I got excited and thought of you!

I am now even more impressed by all the workouts you do with the bosu because balancing on it is really hard!

  17. January 7, 2015 / 9:32 am

It’s so cool that you’re going to start making vlogs, I’m so excited! 😀
Those treadmills look so awesome with the little tv screens haha.
And congrats on getting the dog, he is beautiful! Hopefully he and Cecil will be bestbuds soon 😉
AAAND I’m keeping my fingers crossed for your calf strain recovery! 🙂

    • January 7, 2015 / 1:12 pm

Thank you, thank you, thank you! The treadmill gets about 2,000 more TV stations than I get at home so I am really excited about it, hahah
