My Super Simple Skincare Routine

I feel like I haven’t done a makeup/skincare post in a while so today I thought we could chat about our skincare routines. The truth is most of my life I didn’t have a skincare routine! I literally just washed my face with water and went about my life carefree.

Then I got into my late 20s and started having new skincare issues. I developed pimples even though I never had any in my teenage years. Eczema flared its ugly head and left me with red, itchy cheeks. I also finally got sick and tired of having the most oily skin in the whole world, so I ventured into the skincare section of the store and had a look around.

Before I went cruelty free I was using the La Roche Posey Rosalic moisturizer, which I still think is one of the best moisturizers in the world. Unfortunately they test on animals and I don’t want to be a part of that, so I had to find a replacement. I’ve gone through a lot of trial and error over the last couple of years in search of my holy grail products, and I think I’ve finally found them.

Daytime Skincare

My daytime skincare routine is super simple. I spritz my face every morning with a Mario Badescu facial spray. I honestly don’t think it has any true skincare benefits but it instantly makes me feel awake and refreshed so I’m going to continue using it :).

After the facial spray I apply a moisturizer. My two current go-to products are the Mario Badescu Control Moisturizer and the Ole Henriksen Counter Balance moisturizer. I much prefer the Ole Henriksen one, but I don’t dislike the Mario Badescu one it’s just VERY watery.

When I was talking to the skincare specialist at Sephora a while back he told me that, you probably wouldn’t guess it but, Ole Henriksen is their top selling skincare brand. I was pretty shocked because prior to that conversation I had never heard of Ole Henriksen!

Evening Skincare

I’m a big fan of the Ole moisturizer now, and I know Sam is too, so there are two votes of confidence. I am also OBSESSED with the Ole Pore-Balance Facial Sauna Scrub. I know I’ve mentioned it before a couple times but I’m seriously so in love with it.

I have sensitive skin but this scrub doesn’t irritate me, and it feels so awesome to use. As soon as you rub some between your fingers it starts heating up, but then as you wash it off your face it cools down. It really does give a mini sauna-like experience in the shower!

This is my second bottle of the scrub and I’m pretty sure I’ll be using it for the rest of my life :).

Aside from the scrub, to remove my makeup I also like the Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Deep Dive cleansing gel.

The gel is gentle around my eyes and does a great job at removing makeup, including my waterproof mascara! Ignore the Coconut Miracle Oil, it’s actually a haircare product (but it is my favorite hair oil and I use it every time I get out of the shower to keep my hair feeling soft).

The last and final product I keep around are my facial cleansing wipes. My all time favorite ones are the Pacifica Coconut Water ones, but I found these Burt’s Bees ones somewhere on clearance for $3 and couldn’t pass that kind of deal up!

I use the cleansing wipes to take off my makeup after work before I start my workout. If you remember back when I used to run after work everyday I kept a pack of cleansing wipes in my gym bag too so I could wipe off my makeup before a run.

I am a big believer in removing all products before getting sweaty because it’s been proven that leaving it on can cause breakouts and irritations. Breakouts don’t bother me too much but as someone with eczema I cannot stand when my skin is irritated (and I know what that feels like all too well).

So all-in-all my skincare routine is pretty simple. I went through a phase where I was using toner and masks and other stuff on a regular basis, but it got expensive and I was pretty sure they weren’t making a difference for me.

I’m really happy with the products I’m using now and likely won’t change for a long time (if ever… Ole Henriksen I love you).

What are your current fave skincare brands or products?

I am sooooo basic. I wash my face with some sort of generic face wash (usually Dollar General Brand) that has salicylic acid in it. If it’s in the winter and my skin is dry, I use a little bit of Nivea moisurizer cream (Paul’s!). SOMETIMES I use a makeup wipe, like if I have eye make up on. I never ever ever go to bed or workout with make up on. As soon as I’m “in” for the night, I take off my make up. It’s weird, I do breakout sometimes but I wouldn’t say my skin is oily.

Adam uses a generic face wash too and he has great skin! I don’t think I’ve ever seen him breakout …ever!
