New Sunday Blog Series

Thank you for your kind comments, emails and private messages on Facebook about Duke. I really appreciate every single one of them.

I’m coming at you today with a rare Sunday post because I’ve decided to start a “New Apartment” series here on the blog.

Instead of posting about the apartment during the week, I’ll keep Mon – Fri. posts about running and use Sundays for apartment decor posts.

I’ve never considered myself the interior decorating type at all. I briefly considered hiring an interior decorator for the apartment (a friend of a friend who would have done it inexpensively for us). Then I decided it was a creative project I really want to tackle on my own!

I’ve started a Pinterest board with apartment decor ideas and I’m ready to go!

My biggest issue right now is not being able to find a perfect couch for the living room! It’s. So. Hard.

Over the weekend we did buy stools for the kitchen island which I am very excited about because we now have a place to sit and eat dinner!

Since the living room is basically on hold until I can find the perfect couch, I’ve decided to move on to the master bedroom.

Here are some before pictures… I’m hoping by next Sunday I’ll have after pictures ready!

(Please excuse the messiness of the bed… we’re all friends here, right?)

Inside the big walk-in closet:

I’m only sharing a part of the closet since the other half that has all my clothes is in total chaos right now!

Since I’m going with teal as my accent color for the master bedroom and bathroom I think I’m going to have some pictures I’ve taken at the beach blown up to decorate the walls. I think the color of the water and sand will fit in nicely with the teal, white and grey.

That’s as far as my ideas go for the bedroom right now though. In between football games today I’ll be clicking around Pinterest for more ideas!

Where do you go for home decor ideas? Favorite stores or websites?
Any advice/tips for the master bedroom?

Oh, this will be fun! As we decorate and renovate our house, it will be fun to see you doing the same!

Exactly! I’ve been thinking about your living room setup. I love how you have your medals and trophies in the living room. I’m trying to figure out where the best place for them will be here!

I really like the grey and teal color scheme in the master bedroom and bath. I would definitely stick with those colors, because the dark teal really pops! I’m horrible at decorating. I’ve used pinterest for ideas and that seems to help with the little things. I love shopping at West Elm and Pier One for house decor. Restoration Hardware is another fancy place that I love, but it is SO expensive!!!

Do you let Cecil roam freely around the house (i.e., up on the counters)? We tried to teach Benny to stay off the counters, but it seems pointless. He does what he wants.

    • January 11, 2015 / 4:18 pm

I second Kristens’s question! I’m a major dog person and have never had a cat, so I’m always amazed when I see them strolling around on top of the counters.

    • January 11, 2015 / 4:27 pm

I really like West Elm as well! I’ve never even heard of Restoration Hardware before, I wonder if it’s a PNW thing? I’ll have to check that out!

Cecil roams freely like the king of the castle that he is! We don’t let him up on the counters when we’re cooking or on the table when we’re eating though. As long as we give him his dinner or a couple of treats when we’re eating he’s pretty good about not begging/trying to get up on the table.

Ooohh can’t wait for more of this!:D excited to see what you come up with 😀
I love decorating rooms!:) the only reason I want a huge appartment haha.
I tend to dig deep into my brain for that stuff ;D xD i don’t really look around for ideas, I just know what i like (seriously, i have a full book with ideas, fabrics, patterns etc with ideas for my appartment that i started making when i was 13 or 14, I’m obsessed with that stuff!). I like old style stuff (like Marie Antoinette sofas and chairs), art, and big curtains.
    Good luck 😀

That’s awesome that you know exactly what you want …. and the book idea is so cool! When you get your apartment is going to be the place everyone wants to hang out!

I hope you’ll share your opinions and ideas with me as I go along and start posting more decor stuff!

  4. January 11, 2015 / 3:41 pm

Love it so far, and I really like the garden area! I always thiiiiink I’ll be great at decorating, and then even when I try really really hard, it looks like crap. Oof.

Can’t wait to see more later!!

    • January 11, 2015 / 4:31 pm

I am the same way!! I pick out a few pieces that I love in the store and when I get home I realize it’s not a great fit :/ I’m trying to be really diligent about measuring spaces and stuff like that this time around!

  5. January 11, 2015 / 3:47 pm

So you get to sit but where does Adam sit!? 🙂

I love decorating! I don’t have anything to decorate, though. My favorite places to just look around are places like Ross, Marshalls, etc. since it’s cheap!

The outdoor area at your complex is awesome! You should get Quiddler and play it out there 🙂

Looking forward to hearing about your apartment on Sundays!!

  6. January 11, 2015 / 4:27 pm

What a fun Sunday series!!! I’m not a decorator at all – I just go with things I like:)
Don’t you hate when you buy something and get it home only to find out it is broken?! I hope they get another stool soon so y’all can both have one!!!

    • January 11, 2015 / 10:21 pm

ME TOO! It’s so annoying when you’re excited about a new purchase and it’s broken 🙁 We ordered another one online and it’s being delivered to the store for free this week, so we’ll be able to pick it up soon!

  7. January 11, 2015 / 4:47 pm

Love how airy and bright your new apartment is! Our townhouse is a compilation of random things we’ve gotten from West Elm, CB2, inherited Oriental rugs, a few IKEA pieces, and even a couple of custom-made items from Etsy. (If you’re looking for something in particular, Etsy is a great place to find someone to make something custom for waaay less. We had a reclaimed barnwood table made in Kansas for like 25% from of the cost of someone locally, even with shipping!)

Someone else mentioned it above but Restoration Hardware furniture/linens is soooo nice (but expensive). Can’t wait to see how you decorate your new place!

    • January 11, 2015 / 10:23 pm

Great idea to look on Etsy! I love buying little crafts on Etsy but had never thought about getting furniture from there!

I had literally never heard of Restoration Hardware before this post. I used their store locator and there’s one that’s only about 30 mins away. I’ll have to check it out! The store is in a fancy part of town, so I’m not surprised that it’s expensive! haha

  8. January 11, 2015 / 5:00 pm

This will be a fun addition to your blog! I LOVE DECORATING. When I do a room I take measurements, and collect color swatches, and then browse stores I like taking pictures of what I like. Then I try my best to piece together “the look” by shopping around at cheaper stores, antique shops, and architectural salvage stores. I have re-upholstered furniture, and made pillows, etc. I did our downstairs bathroom by making the sink cabinet from an antique cabinet….OK too much info!
My advice about the master bedroom is that it is your private sanctuary so surround yourself with things/colors you love (Adam too). And splurge on comfy bed linens!

    • January 11, 2015 / 10:26 pm

That is so awesome that you’re really crafty and are able to make so many of your own things! I don’t think I have the patience for that at all, but I love the idea of shopping around at antique shops and such. Incredible that you made the sink cabinet out of an antique cabinet!

We’ll definitely splurge on some new bed linens. We haven’t bought new stuff in a while and are in desperate need for a new comforter. I love the sheets you see on the bed now though and don’t know if I’ll replace them. We splurged on them to begin with; I think they’re 1200 thread count… super comfortable and the color fits!

  9. January 11, 2015 / 5:27 pm

I am really excited/nervous to start decorating my house once we move! It seems so daunting! I’m excited to follow along with what you do and maybe get some ideas:)

    • January 11, 2015 / 10:28 pm

It’s so exciting to start with a blank canvas! When we moved to our old apartment three years ago I really wanted to decorate it with a beachy theme, but at the time we were sooooo busy and then a few months went by and I lost my motivation. That’s why I’m trying to be so proactive this time!

When are you planning to move into your new house? I’ll be looking forward to follow your decorating if you blog about it!

  10. January 11, 2015 / 10:32 pm

This will be fun to read! Since we are still in the process of renovating and decorating I’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about decorations and interior design. It’ll be cool to see what you are doing with your place. I love how clean and modern the space and your furniture is and it works so well with the grey and teal.

    • January 12, 2015 / 7:40 am

Are you using any specific sites for ideas?

I love Pinterest but it can feel so overwhelming since there are so many different styles/options and I like a bunch of them! haha

  11. January 12, 2015 / 8:33 pm

I love your color palette of grey and teal! My faveee store is West Elm, but fun to mix it up with Ikea and Target too. I def troll Etsy and Pinterest. Its also fun to get decor inspiration from IG accounts (West Elm, Real Simple, Domino) etc.. then I see who they follow and follow them 🙂
