NXT in Orlando

I was missing in action for a good part of last week because Adam and I were getting ready to go out of town for a couple of days.

Some of you know that Adam and I both went to the University of Central Florida in Orlando for a couple of years. We actually met at UCF when I was a freshman and he was a sophomore. I’ll tell you that I don’t believe in love at first sight … but it kind of was a case of love at first sight. Something made me reach out and grab this stranger’s arm as he was walking right on past me. Maybe it was love, maybe it was alcohol, we’ll never know.

On Thursday after work Adam and I drove up to Orlando to the UCF area for the first time in 10 years. I moved to Miami in 2006 and neither of us has gone back to the that part of Orlando since.

We made the drive up because we had tickets to a WWE NXT show (pro wrestling). I grew up watching wrestling with my dad. As a kid some of my earliest memories are of seeing him sitting on the living room floor with a glass of milk on Monday nights cheering on Hulk Hogan like a kid! He used to take me to events all around central Florida to see shows and meet wrestlers. To this day my dad is the biggest wrestling fan that I know and he couldn’t be happier that somehow Adam has gotten me into it.

Creating signs for wrestling shows is just part of the fan culture, so of course Adam and I had to come up with a good one. My favorite wrestler is Finn Bálor and he just happens to be the current NXT champ. He always comes out wearing his championship belt and a black leather jacket that he flashes open to show off the belt.

Adam said I should recreate this belt situation with a three sided poster board, so that’s what I set out to do! It took me three days but I eventually got it! I started by buying the poster board and outlining the belt and Finn’s legs.

I then filled in the paint and was more than halfway there!

Here’s the final product – closed jacket:

And opened jacket:

It’s not the most beautiful poster but I think it’s kind of cool and creative. Our show was taped so I can’t wait to see my poster on the TV when it airs next month!

Here I am at the show in my wrestling stuff:

Yes, I totally get the irony of being pro-gun control and yet wearing a hat that says Bullet Club on it. I would never, ever, ever wear this hat anywhere but at a wrestling show! 🙂

We really had the best seats ever. I can’t wait to do this again!

After the show we headed back to the hotel and were up by noon to head back home because I had a race on the horizon!

We walked in the door to this:

Yes, that’s Cecil on top of the fridge, belly up. He gets into weird stuff when we’re gone.

Have you ever made a sign/poster for a concert or show?
Until this poster I hadn’t made one since my first *NSYNC concert back in 1998!

I love the story about reaching out and grabbing Adam’s arm! Question: If you hadn’t grabbed his arm in that instance, would you have ever met him? If you guys weren’t at the same party, would you have met him?

Paul and I have determined that if he hadn’t reached out to me on Myspace, we would have never met each other. Even though we only lived 20 min from each other, we didn’t have any mutual friends or activities. That is so crazy to think about! I wonder if I hadn’t met Paul would I have just met someone else and still be as happy as I am now? Oh man this is getting deep.

We went to a shitty carnival this past summer and there were “wrestlers” there. it was soooooooooooo low budget. Like, really gross. But we watched it because it was funny.

I *think* Adam and I would have still met but it’s hard to say. He lived in an apartment across the hall from one of my friends, and a good friend of his lived in the same apartment as my friend. My friend and his friend weren’t really friends though (the student apartment complex just paired them together) so I think we would have had a 50/50 chance of meeting and actually talking under different circumstances!

That’s funny about wrestling – some of the independent stuff is pretty bad. Especially how some of the indies treat women. The WWE is making a strong push to showcase different types of women and to make it more about their athletic abilities and less about hair pulling and sexual objectification. It warms my heart that the majority of male wrestling fans are actually for this change in the women’s wrestling division!

I love that you share this kind of dorky side of yourself with us! My husband got me into motocross for a while and I always kind of felt like it was such a weird/dorky interest that maybe I should be embarrassed about, but then I was like, oh well, who cares what other people think.

Cute story about grabbing Adam’s arm and proceeding to fall in love!

I felt the exact same way about wrestling but Adam said I should come out of the closet about it 😀 😀

First meeting stories are always cool. We met playing adult softball and it WAS NOT love at first sight lol.

Balor is a stud. I don’t get into nxt too much, my son and i stick to the main roster. Although I’m awaiting Mr Balors call up at any time. Funny you posted about this becuae a buddy and I were geeking out Sunday and Monday while the royal rumble and raw were on. If someone saw our messages they would have thought we were 10 year old boys lol.

Adam and I were totally geeking out about the rumble too! Sami Zayn! AJ Styles! Ah! In hindsight I wish we would have went to RAW since it was in Miami, but after all the driving and the half on Sunday, I just figured I would be too exhausted… and I was right about that haha. It would have been great to see the Rock though!

Haha! I love your story about first meeting Adam. That’s pretty cute. Frank and I met a a few times before we actually became friends at work. He was my TA for a semester and then I started working in his lab, where we really hit it off.

I love your sign so much. You are really creative! I’m not much for pro-wrestling, but those seats are awesome and that looks like a pretty fun trip!

Thanks! 🙂 It was fun to work on and I’m looking forward to seeing it on TV! Can I tell you something? We are such wrestling nerds that we had fourth row tickets for the show, but at the last minute we found first row tickets on stubhub and bought them too! haha The seats were so incredible though it was worth every penny!

I love that you and Frank met at school too!

I love this story! I think when Rick and I first saw each other it was love at first sight too. I was still in college and had been in a long term relationship so I told him “friends only” but deep down I knew I was going to marry him. I think you did an awesome job on the poster! I did make a “poster” for a concert one time and it got me backstage to meet the band 🙂 The poster was actually a sign that I was wearing on my chest that said the local radio station that was giving out backstage passes. It was quite the experience that I will never forget!!

I know exactly what you mean! When Adam and I first started seeing each other I had just gotten to college and I told him I wasn’t looking for anything serious… but deep down I was like “WHOA. HE’S THE ONE.” 🙂

That’s so cool that you got backstage with your poster! At the *NSYNC concert that I made a poster for they made us throw them away. I never made a poster after that – so disheartening! Mine said “Justin, are you from Tennessee? Because you’re the only 10 I see!”

He is from Tennessee and he’s still a perfect 10! haha

        LOL…I love that! So clever!!

  6. January 27, 2016 / 6:13 pm

You really had the BEST seats ever, OMG and your sign is AWESOME! I grew up thinking wrestling was silly. BD (my ex) always had it on in our house and eventually I learned to “tolerate” it. However, I once found myself trying to connect with a client whom I seemingly had nothing in common with…until she brought up Rey Mysterio and his 619. I pounced on that link so fast!!! We ended up talking a lot of wrestling–I knew a ton by then–and in the end creating a great rapport. WHO would have known?!?! BD was like, “Told ya so”. ha!

“Maybe it was love, maybe it was alcohol, we’ll never know.” LOL. I’ve had that feeling so many times!!

  8. January 31, 2016 / 10:41 pm

haha, I love that, not that long ago you were the hesitant wrestling fan and now posters lol I have made Tony Stewart Nascar posters for a race 🙂 It was fun, it made people come and talk to me lol
