Picking Paint Colors

Lately I’ve been spending a lot of time browsing through interior design blogs, with special attention paid to the Young House Love blog!

I think Sherry and John have done an amazing job renovating their current home. A lot of the color schemes they’ve incorporated into their home I’ll be using in my own.

At first I really wanted to do light grey walls with white trim and a lot of copper accents like this:

Then one morning it occurred to me that unless I wanted to re-do the flooring throughout both levelsย of the townhouse this color scheme just isn’t right forย our new home.

I would love to have white marble floors but that’s just not the reality of what we will have on the day we move in. (I want to upgrade to them someday!) Instead we have really light, warm toned wood floors.

Since I’m working with these floors I had to come up with a new color scheme. I still want to incorporate some grey but instead of grey/white I’ll be going for grey/beige. Probably the same Benajmin Moore Edgecomb Grey that Young House Love have put in their current home:

The Edgecomb Grey won’t be far off from what the walls current look like at the townhouse, but a fresh coat of paint will make everything feel brand new to me!

I’m also thinking of stealing the YHL bright front door idea!

I’m not sure if I’ll go for this same blue color but I definitely wantย the door to be something other than white. If you have any suggestions I would love to hear them!

As the closing date gets closer I get more and more excited about the possibilities!

What color paint do you have in your home?
Homeowners, what was the first thing you did when you got your keys?

My favorite wall color is Benjamin Moore’s Revere Pewter. If I ever get another house then I will definitely be using that somewhere!

My old house was freshly painted in a yellowy-beige color. It was a split level and the previous owners had just done it, so it seemed like a waste to repaint. I really disliked the color ๐Ÿ™‚

That’s so exciting that you are closing soon!!

I just looked up Revere Pewter! So pretty!

I love hearing about how you are going to decorate your home. ๐Ÿ™‚ Grey is a good color. I painted our guestroom grey. It has white accents (were already there) and then I did the bedding and other decorative accents a really dark red. Hmmm the first thing we did when we got the keys on the improvement front of things was rip up the astroturf that was on our front stoop! As for painting, we painted both bedrooms and our front room (music room). It is ORANGE. It looked like a fun house at first but once I put all the draperies and decorations up it worked. ๐Ÿ™‚

I feel like your choice of dark colors is such a northerner type thing! Most houses down here are painted really light colors. but I remember living up north and seeing darker colors more often. I think since we don’t get fall or winter seasons, we paint our houses to reflect perpetual summer!

That makes total sense in regards to the color scheme.

I used to have Edgecomb gray in the master br before we moved. I loved it. I went to paint the master here that color and because of large windows, it didn’t work. I tried a lot of the colors I loved–Revere pewter (it looked blue). I guess my point is to buy the small paint sample size and paint swatches on the wall. I went through 8, before I found what works. The amount of light etc. really changes the paint colors! I got to the point of looking up the “recipes” of the paint colors to get precisely what I wanted. Needless to say, I am now pretty good friends with the guys at the paint store. On the front door–I really think front doors are where you get get bold. I painted ours a fushia/purple, and LOVE IT. Of course, I felt bold enough to paint it that color because I ordered a new set of doors that will take 10 weeks to come in, so it was kind of a “why not?” …as you can see home decorating is another hobby of mine :).

Oh no! Now I’m nervous since we have a lot of tall windows in the townhouse. I hope the color ends up working for us. I looked up Revere Pewter and it’s really pretty too, although just a tinge darker than I would ideally like … or at least that’s what I think right now! You’re right, I need to do some swatches to know for sure!

I love that you did your door in fuchsia! That’s awesome. I can picture it in my head and it’s beautiful!

The gray and copper accents look great together ๐Ÿ™‚ Find some inspiration pics you love and maybe that will help you to find the right bright pop of color!
You are going to have so much fun.
When I got my keys I started removing wall paper – it was awful! I still have rooms upstairs I have never redone. I just got burnt out and it is hard because kenny doesn’t help with that stuff at all..

Oh, wallpaper. I have to send you a pic of what one of the guest bathrooms looks like in the townhouse. It’s the most BIZARRE decorating style I’ve ever seen and it includes the tackiest stripped wallpaper. One of the first things I’m doing when we move in is getting rid it! I can’t wait to peel it off!!!!

I swore when we looked at our house, the first thing I was going to do was change the ugly blue curtains and paint…it’s been six years. I’ve done neither. I would love to paint my living room a light grey with a crisp white trim and white ceiling. Maybe I’ll get around to it in another six years.

I did buy new curtains a year ago, but they need to be hemmed, so they are still waiting to be hung.

Hahahha you sound just like me! When we moved into this apartment 2 years ago I had all kinds of plans for decorating and then ended up doing NOTHING. Decorating has never been my thing, but I’m going to try really hard to stick with the projects for the townhouse. We’ll see how it ends up going, haha ๐Ÿ˜€

Tell me of these interior design blogs! (Or, I suppose I could just google it….)
We bought our house in Nov. 2014 & are still trying to get some renovations going on it (planning/permits takes foreeevvvverrrrr….) so we’re basically putting off painting/furnishing until that’s over because what’s the point. I definitely need some interior design advice!!
