Pre-Birthday Gifts and the 50K on My Mind

We’ve made it to Thursday! Thinking-Out-Loud

Thank you to Amanda @ Running with Spoons for hosting!

Today I’m Thinking Out Loud about all running related stuff!

1. Happy Pre-Birthday to Me!

My birthday isn’t until August 4th so this gift to myself is a bit early. Is it too early to even call it a pre-birthday gift? Who cares! : )

My new Adrenalines!!!!

I haven’t run in pink shoes in *forever* and I like to match my shoes/running clothes a bit, so obviously I also had to get a matching sports bra and top (FYI both are on sale and the top is only $16!).

Messy hair, don’t care is my motto most days.

The top is super sheer mesh which is great for staying cool, but I like to wipe the sweat off of my face with my top sometimes and the mesh kind of hurt when I did that last night. I think I am still going to buy another one though because I love how lightweight it is!

(This post isn’t sponsored, I just love Brooks and a good deal.)

2. Chicago Lakefront 50K

A few weeks ago I wrote that I thought I had found the 50K that I wanted to do but I didn’t say which one it was because I’m so dramatic : )  It’s the Chicago Lakefront 50/50.

It’s a 50K and 50-miler that takes place every April (AND November). It is supposedly a small race that is first-timer friendly.

The 50K course consists of three out-and-backs, and is described as flat and fast. The flat part is really important to me coming from pancake-like Fort Lauderdale!

This race will be 6 months after my first marathon which I think gives me time to maintain a solid base, run a few half marathons for fun, possibly run a second marathon as training and then hit the 50K distance with a bang!

That’s how I feel right now anyway. We’ll see how I feel after I run 26.2 miles in October! : )

3. Breaking 24 Mins in the 5K (Adam)

Yesterday Adam and I signed up for a 5K that takes place at the end of August.

This will be the second 5K that A runs with me this year, thus fulfilling his annual quota of running two races per year before declaring that he has retired from running.

He told me last night that he plans to break 24 mins! I’m excited about that for him since 24:XX is his PR. I wish he would stop retiring so he could officially be in our cool club of sexy people.

I haven’t decided on my goal for the race yet since I will be neck deep in marathon training by then. Plus the race is on a Saturday when I normally do my long run. I will have to talk to my coach and see what she thinks!

Bonus: I saw this on the Internet…

and thought you needed to see it too!

If it didn’t make you smile I don’t know what to say! : )

Hope you’re off to a great Thursday!

How did you pick your first big race?

Did you do a lot of research, or sign up on a whim?

Love the shirt, but I can see how it can hurt if you rub your face in it. Get a cool sweatband! And congrats on finding a 50 k. Lakeside in Chicago sounds windy as anything to me! And three out and backs would drive me crazy, but they can be comforting to some. Anyway, don’t want to burst your bubble, that is just me. I’m sure you can handle it well!

I thought A LOT about the 3 out-and-backs thing, but in the end I decided I like the idea. I always break my long run down into segments which I think helps me mentally. And sometimes I do out-and-backs on my long runs anyway. My beach loop is only long enough to do 9 miles total before you have to retrace your steps, so I’m kind of used to it!

I used to *always* run in a sweatband, but then I decided they kind of gross me out, haha! 😀

I signed up for an Olympic distance triathlon before I knew how to swim and a 50k trail ultra because it was cheaper than a marathon … Haha! Both were the best experiences I’ve have. Sometimes you’ve just gotta jump in and go for it! Good for you for signing up for the 50k! Doing the marathon first will be great training for it.

      WOW! You are brave!

I don’t think I have a spontaneous bone in my body!

Happy early bday, heck I buy myself early bday presents all year long lol. Big goal for Adam, good luck to him and I love the idea of retiring every year that is awesome.

So excited for the Lakefront 50k, next April May will be right around my first ultra as well, hopefully :).

We have a few huge races here in AZ so it was pretty easy to pick. It will be much harder when we start to travel for races. These days we sign up based on our friends, hanging out before and after is so much for fun with friends around.

      Sign up for Chicago!!!! 🙂

I love treating myself to new running gear! Those shoes look SWEET!

I can’t believe you’re doing a 50K, I can barely even wrap my mind around 26.2 at this point. You go girl! Chicago is close to me so we’ll have to meet up when you come here to run it!

    1. Kristina @ Blog About Running

It would be awesome to meet up! Let’s definitely plan on it!

Truthfully the only reason I am running the marathon is because it puts me one step closer to the ultramarathon. I am a bit too obsessed with ultrarunning!

Those shoes are fabulous! What a wonderful bday present to yourself. 🙂 My first big race was the Harrisburg Marathon and I picked it because the starting like was 7 minutes from my door and then my friends and family could come cheer me on! We also weren’t huge travelers so traveling + marathon would have been too much for me for my first one.

I’m so excited that they are pink lol.

I have to buy wide width shoes and last year the Adrenalines only came in wide width in blue so I was stuck with blue all year! 😛

Do you follow the Faces in Things twitter? That cheese grater made an appearance…such a sill, fun twitter to follow!

I wonder if 3 out-and-backs for such a long distance would get frustrating…But the course description sounds nice! I can’t believe how close you are to meeting your goal for an ultra before you’re 30!

Love the top! I have two Brooks Mesh tanks and I love them. I wore my Run Happy one at Boston this year. Good luck to Adam and a very happy early birthday!

I have yet to actually run my first race, but I’m thinking that when/if I decide to do it, it’ll most likely be on a whim and whatever the next one is that’s close and short 😆 I’ve heard a lot of people say that racing is what really got them excited about running, though, so that might just be the doorway for me to get passionate about it after trying and failing soooo many times.

You have *never* run in a race? Really?! I am so surprised by that! I think you would really like it!

  10. Karen

I am excited you picked your 50 miler 🙂 I look at trail races all the time, but I always flake out. Great new pre-bday treats! I just want to run more than 6 miles sometime soon lol

I want to run a trail race but I don’t think it’s in the cards for me. There are literally no trails down here that I can run on to build up ankle strength in preparation even if I did sign up for a race out of my area 🙁 You will run more than 6 miles soon, esp. since you have a half marathon in your future 😀

  11. Courtney @RunningforCupcakes

I have a tank from Brook’s made out of that same material, and I know exactly what you mean when you said it hurts to wipe your face. I’ve only worn mine once for that reason but I do really like it!

    1. Kristina @ Blog About Running

Yes! I didn’t even think about the material and when I wiped my face it was like sandpaper! Ouch!

      But it’s soooooo lightweight I felt like I wasn’t even wearing a top! 😀

  12. Jennifer

Wow a 50K! So impressed! Marathon? What a breeze 😉

OH! I have a friend that ran her first 50k there this past spring! She loved it! She thought the out and backs were a great way to break up the race. So excited for you!
