Run Life, Work Life, Home Life Updates!

Phew. The days just keep on rolling by, and it’s almost June!

May has been a pretty great month though!

Run Life

Every year around this time the running blog world goes crazy with “5 tips to run in the blazing heat” type posts and every year I yawn when I see them.

My cocky runner self is all, “Oh you think 85 is hot? That’s cold to me, I live in South Florida!” The thing is, this year I seem to have lost all of my marbles.

I guess that break I took from running in March – April wiped away everything I know about running in the heat because I have been TERRIBLE at the hydration game!

The last two runs my calves have been super tight, probably from not enough hydration, and I keep thinking I’ll be okay without a water bottle!

I need to get my act together and keep water with me 24/7. I mean, you only know you’re a runner in summer when you have to pee 500 times a day, right?

Dehydrated or not, I am grateful that I was able to get back to an almost normal running and workout schedule in May!

Work Life

If you’re a frequent reader here you’ve heard me talk briefly about the merger that the company I work for is going through and how my role is evolving as I move into a director level position.

The chips are finally starting to fall into place! I’m no longer working until 10 at night (most days anyway) and I feel organized (most of the time anyway).

Oh yeah, and that whole compensation thing is getting worked out too!

Home Life

Everything on the home front is GREAT! My mom has finally committed to moving to Fort Lauderdale later this summer and I couldn’t be happier. It will be so nice to have her nearby instead of a five hour drive away!

After her husband passed away two years ago she said she was going to move here, but she wasn’t sure about timing. Eventually my grandfather moved in with her and she cared for him until he passed away this January.

Now my mom finally feels closure and is ready to move on with her life. She is looking forward to new beginnings!

Also, Adam and I are planning out our summer trip!!! This August we’re planning to go to La Romana in the Dominican Republic for the first time!

The details are not hashed out yet, but I am really excited! This will be our first time staying at an all-inclusive resort. I’ve always thought they were cheesy, but you can find some really nice gems if you look in the right places!

A colleague of mine recommended staying at the Grand Bahia Principe which looks incredible! I can’t wait!

Isn’t it BEAUTIFUL?!

Going in August will be the best way to ring in the 29th year of my life. Last one in the 20s!

Whoa!

How’s your summer hydration going? Back to drinking a million gallons per day?

Have you ever been to the Dominican Republic (La Romana area)? If so I’d love your tips for day trips!

I haven’t been good enough about hydrating lately despite the warmer temps we have had around here. I will usually drink water or nuun right after I run but during the rest of the day Im not as good about it. I have a feeling its almost time to start brining water on my runs again!

Me too – I hate carrying water with me on runs but I think it’s getting to be about that time again. I also need to get back into the habit of drinking an electrolyte drink after my runs, I’ve gotten out of that habit too!

Girl… I feel you on the heat/humidity, I live in Jacksonville. I’m not even very far south and I think it’s horrible up here! Early mornings and evenings are my best time to get out right now.

    1. Kristina @ Blog About Running

Agreed on the early morning and evenings thing! I always go in the evenings but may try to start going in the mornings before the sun rises at some point. I’m not a morning runner at all, but maybe I’ll give it a real try this year!

The vacation looks like it will be beautiful! I would definitely be down with staying at an all inclusive place. Less stress, right? I have never been anywhere tropical (not even FL!) but we are going to San Diego this summer, so at least there will be palm trees so I am going to count that as semi tropical. 😉

I am glad you are going to be working less hours- I know you were staying crazy late!

YAY THAT YOUR MOM IS MOVING. 🙂 That’s wonderful. I am sure she is excited too.

PA is one of those crazy places where I can be all cocky like “I run in 90+ during the summer and in single digits during the winter!!!” Sometimes it sucks, but mind over matter, right? On Monday it was about 83 and sunny. It was the first hot day I ran and I remember going up a small hill and feeling a little throw uppy. But I did it!

Nice job getting up the hill! When it’s super hot out I tend to give myself a million excuses like, “it’s okay to take a 30 second break before running this bridge” or “it’s okay to take a 30 second break to get another drink of water” or “it’s okay to take a 30 second break to retie your shoe that doesn’t need retying but maybe will need retying at some point!”

San Diego is really nice!!! I’ve only been once but I loved it. California in general is tropical and beautiful! I love Fort Lauderdale but if I had to move someplace else in the USA it would definitely be California!

My summer hydration is going great, but my summer running is not. I don’t know how I marathon trained in this last year- I can barely get through 3 or 4 miles now. I’m a wimp! That’s so awesome that your mom will be so close to you, mom’s are the best! And your all-inclusive resort looks amazing!!! You and Adam are going to have the time of your lives!

I’m so happy that my mom is going to be here! She doesn’t know it yet but I am already planning for her to do Couch to 5K so we can run 5Ks together haha!

  5. Susan

That is awesome your mom can move closer to you! So important to have family near by, I think. Today I actually ran in shorts! I was still overdressed (it was 56 but I need to drop the head band and gloves). I am happy Colorado is finally getting warmer–this girl loves summer.

Your trip sounds amazing. You will like the all inclusive. Everything is there if you need it and you don’t have to worry about the bill since it’s paid for plus you can still venture out for excursions if you want (not like on a cruise where you are stuck on a boat which kind of got to me…). We stayed the the Grand Bahia Principe in Tulum. It was lovely!!

    1. Kristina @ Blog About Running

Ohh I’m glad to hear that you’ve stayed at one of the Grand Bahia and liked it. I know you have gone to quite a few all inclusives so I was interested to hear what you thought! I am looking forward to doing a couple of excursions. One of my colleagues used to work for an excursion company in the DR so he has given me a lot of tips and is able to get us some good deals, and another one of my colleagues did this exact trip last year so he’s had some good tips as well. I can’t wait!!!

I agree about family. My next goal is to get my dad to move down here too. He says he will within the next 2-3 years but I’m hoping I can convince him to move sooner!

Hydration has been ok so far. Could definitely drink more water. From one blazing hot state to another, here is a huge tip a buddy and I found…..pickle juice!! He use to cramp really bad in his half marathons and now he drinks pickle juice throughout the run and has pretty much eliminated the cramping. Try it!!

I like pickles but I don’t know if I could drink pickle juice! haha

I may try some salt tabs or something like that soon though because I do remember my calves cramping up quite a few times last summer. Ugh!

We hit 91* yesterday, and it was humid and I thought of you during my 5 mile run. I don’t know how you do it!! We get heat and humidity, but with breaks between, so it isn’t ALL THE TIME. I can definitely say, give me the cold ANY DAY. (How quickly I forget my end of winter griping…). My problem with hydration lately is drinking too much iced tea. I drink unsweetened, but I still think I should be consuming more water.

I drink unsweet iced tea all the time too – it IS water, haha.

Running in 91* with humidity is no joke. Right now we’re still mostly in the 80s in the mornings and evenings but I know the 90s and 100s are right around the corner!

  8. Karen

The trip looks amazing!! My hubby and I looked at your cruise pictures several times 🙂 We need a vacation badly. It’s coming one day soon, i hope!
My summer hydration plan so far has been sprinklers lol I hate putting on the pack, I need to get over it!

    1. Kristina @ Blog About Running

Hahah I saw that in your blog. I can’t imagine drinking from sprinklers! haha

I have a Camelbak, a handheld and a waist pack and I don’t love any of them. The waist pack is the best because when it’s full it doesn’t move at all – but once it gets near empty it bounces all over the place no matter how tight I pull the cord. By the end of the run it’ll be up right under my boobs if I am not constantly pulling it down!

  9. Heather

I have been slacking on my hydration throughout the day because the drinking fountain on my floor at work is out of order. So instead of trekking down to a different floor with my water bottle, I just sit around not drinking any water. I could tell yesterday that it was starting to affect my running…ugh. Need to fix this ASAP.

I’ve been really great about drinking water the past few months but now that it’s getting warm around here, I’m starting to crave soda again and I do not like it! Hopefully it’s just a phase 🙂

A summer trip? Didn’t you just go on a cruise?! LOL. We are going on a cruise in August and I can’t wait! I haven’t had a real vacation in years.

Glad your work is going so well and that mama bear is moving closer! I’ve missed you!

I have no idea how you run in that Florida heat!! North Carolina has been crazy this week and it’s been close to 90 every day, which is just way too hot for me. I’m not a morning runner, so I always run after work which is the hottest point of the day, so I’ve been spending a lot of time on the treadmill! That resort looks AMAZING! That makes me so excited about my honeymoon in September!

Yay on all fronts!! Haha I giggled about 85 degrees…we will need to make sure you get throwaways for Chicago! Hopefully it won’t be too cold for you 🙂 (I’m crossing my fingers for 40s-50s). So glad work (hour wise) is getting better and so nice your mom is moving to FL! Ahhh I could go for an all inclusive vacay on a beach. Cant wait for you go so I can hear about it!

I’ve lost my hydration/heat resistance too. I need to acclimate all over again \, which totally sucks. It takes 14 runs to acclimate according to “experts” but I think I never really fully do!

Fun to catch up a little with you!!!
We are going to plan a 20th reunion (just got back from the 19th reunion in San Antonio) with a group of people Chris went to Flight Screening with (the step before USAF Pilot Training) at an all inclusive – I think that everyone is leaning to Cabo.
Exciting that your mom is moving close to you.

Well, as I’m sure you know, I’m pretty much a hot mess this time of year when it comes to running. Maybe I’m just a big baby, but my motivation to run has COMPLETELY disappeared, and of course, because I’m so inconsistent that just makes every run in the heat that much harder. I think you’re a badass for being able to train so consistently when it’s this freakin’ hot year-round! Super jealous of your summer getaway, BTW! I’ve never stayed at an all-inclusive resort, but I’ve heard great things…so I’m really interested in hearing your thoughts. It looks absolutely beautiful!

Is it pretty easy and affordable for you to catch a flight to different islands in the Caribbean? It must be so nice to travel in close proximity. You and Adam NEED to check out Turks and Caicos. I would not steer you wrong, I promise!!!

I really loved that pics about “La Romana in the Dominican Republic” and summer is too hot getting dehydrated every time so,I’ve to take the water bottle along with me for running.
