Running All The Miles

Hello there! Sorry I’m a day late on my long run recap but truthfully it took the life out of me! As I inch closer to the taper my legs are definitely feeling the effects of late marathon training. I thought I had 18 miles on the schedule for Saturday but it turns out it was only supposed to be 16 miles. Oh well, I don’t think the extra 2 miles hurt me in any way.

The mileage honestly didn’t feel too bad on my legs, but it exhausted me mentally. It took me 4:22 to finish up @ at a nice easy average pace of 14:35 (about a minute slower than race pace). Here’s how I entertained myself for almost 4.5 hours:

  • 1.5 hours on the treadmill watching YouTube videos
  • 1.5 hours on the treadmill listening to my marathon training playlist*
  • 1.5 hours running outside listening to old episodes of the Psychobabble podcast
  • Included in there were about 2 hours of total mental boredom

I really need to figure out what I’m going to do to stay entertained this coming weekend for my 20-miler. I should probably add more songs to my marathon training playlist since it currently rotates between five songs. What can I say, when I find a song/songs I like I listen on repeat until I can’t take it anymore.

If you promise not to laugh I’ll tell you which songs are on my playlist …

  • Starstruck, Lady Gaga
  • Boys Boys Boys, Lady Gaga
  • Don’t Let Me Get Me, Pink
  • Jenny From the Block, J-Lo
  • Wannabe, Spice Girls

Okay, seriously, you promised not to laugh! I like what I like, haha.

I felt pretty good on Saturday night. Adam and I went over to my mom’s house:

And then out to dinner where I ate almost every last drop of this healthy dessert:

On Sunday I woke up feeling like I was hit by a truck! I dragged myself out of bed around 10:30am, watched the Dolphins game (oy, we won but it wasn’t pretty) and then I napped from 5pm – 9pm. I got up for a few minutes to eat a small dinner and then I went right back to sleep. I NEEDED IT! I was just exhausted.

This was my couch situation. I don’t know about you, but after a long run I get really cold and need to pile on all the blankets for a little while.

My coach reminded me that these last two weeks are supposed to be TOUGH but that around the corner I have a nice little break before the big day. I just need to make it through the next few days!

BTW I know I haven’t mentioned my hip in a couple of weeks. I just realized over the weekend that it’s really not bothering me at all anymore. I’m so happy! Deep stretching really made such a world of a difference for me and my fragile hips.

Hope you’re having a great week so far. Today is a BIG DAY for me: The Mindy Project returns :). At 9pm I’ll be hanging a Do Not Disturb sign on my head.

How was your weekend?
Did it involve the two best things: football and running?

Nice job with that long run! Sounds like a good way to break it up. So glad your hip is feeling good, too!

Wannabe is a classic. I am going through play lists on Amazon Prime and there is one for 1 Hit Winders from the 90s. It’s classic! You would probably live it.

Thanks for the recommendation! I truly believe that the late 90s – early 2000s was the BEST time to listen to the radio. So many good songs came out during that period!

Better to run a couple extra miles than to accidentally cut a run short, which I may or may not have done last week (so yes, mid run I convinced myself that 9+2=12. So yeah. Math fail.). Great job on your long run and I am super impressed that you managed all of that mileage on the treadmill. So boring.

The first hour or so never bothers me, but after that I really need to be engrossed in a good show/movie or playlist to stay mentally in the game.

That’s so funny about your long run math. That’s definitely happened to me before!

Great job! Breaking up a run like that is so smart. Sadly, despite the abundance of AWESOME podcasts I found, I just can’t listen to them on long runs. My mind wanders too much and I can’t pay attention 🙁

Just a fair warning – be prepared that your first week of taper might be hard, too. This was something that I was totally not expecting when I trained for Grandma’s this Spring. I thought the minute I was done with my last long run and into taper I’d feel light as a feather but boy was I in for a rude awakening – I actually felt more frustrated and exhausted during that week than I did during my peak weeks! I think because the first week is still fairly high mileage and it’s my body’s first chance to realize how tired it is. This may not happen to you, but I thought I’d warn you so you’re not blindsided by it like I was!

I remember reading about your difficult taper period! I wonder what it will be like this time around. Last year I was totally distracted since I was in Europe on vacation for most of my taper. I also took the taper really seriously last year and I think the second week I only ran 8 or 12 miles in total!

I am also super excited for the new Mindy Project tonight. It’ll be waiting for me for when I get home from doing a track workout with some friends, what a nice reward!

I’m amazed that you’re able to spend 3 hours on the treadmill without completely losing your mind. I’m sure it’s crazy hot there right now, but still, that’s impressive. Nice work with the extra-long long run!

      The perfect reward!

I really liked the premier. I thought the actors who played Mindy’s parents were perfect, and the ending made me tear up!

Wow good job mentally getting through that 18 miler! 4.5 hours is a LONG ASS TIME TO RUN! I struggled mentally on my last run and it was only 10 miles! Maybe you need a good book on tape for your 20?

I LOVE THE SONG BOYS BOYS BOYS!!!!!! I don’t think it was ever a popular one but it should be. 🙂

Ohhh an audio book is a great idea. If I can hold off reading Mindy’s new book until this weekend that would be the perfect thing to take with me! Thanks!

I LOVE BOYS BOYS BOYS! It should be one of GaGa’s most popular songs because it’s so damn catchy!

My weekend involved football at USC!! No running. At the SC game, the music playing in the background was my running playlist–which I put together in 2011 and have not changed it much then: Sexy & I Know It, Party in the USA, Dynamite, All I Do is Win, etc. I felt totally hip and totally not at the same time….hahaha!!

    That dessert looks YUM!

That’s so cool that you heard your playlist! 2011 was a good year for music. I love to rock out to Party in the USA 🙂

Oh man…you are HARDCORE for running that long on a treadmill. And I’m so glad to hear your hip isn’t bothering you anymore, that’s such great news! You’re soooooo close now, so excited for you!

Good job with the long run, you’re almost there!

I was so excited to do my last LONG long run this weekend! 18 miles for me, too. I’ve been keeping myself entertained on long runs by catching up on the Gilmore Guys podcast – I was almost afraid I’d catch up before the end of training (they put them out at 2/week and I listen to more than that), but I think it’ll work out perfectly with the remainder of running through taper. 🙂

You were amazing on your 18-miler! I read your blog post from over the weekend and was so excited for you – awesome pacing!

I’m glad your hip slipped your kind…that’s a good sign!

The best part of long runs is the nap and food after. I never feel like I can nap long enough after!

I was thinking on my run today about how long runs are sometimes so much mentally harder than others. I ran a 10k this weekend with my best friend and it felt like it took about 5 minutes, it makes such a difference when you aren’t thinking about the running part! Good job on all the miles, you deserve to sleep as much as you can!

I can’t believe your training cycle is almost over!! That’s so awesome! I love your playlist. My weekend was spent trying to salvage my iPhone after my son decided it should take a swim in the pool. Fun times!

Nothing like throwing in a couple extra miles on your long run. Hey, if your body is feeling good….

I always create a new playlist and add a couple new songs to the mix when I have a long run on my schedule. Something about new music!

Speaking of football, my Seahawks are not off to a good start. We are notorious for making bad decisions when it matters most. Ugh. Congrats on your Dolphins win!

Hey lady! So glad your 16-turned-18-miler went well. (I know I have been very lax about commenting on blogs, but I still read, even if my own blog did get neglected and turned to dust.) Are you on Spotify? I would be happy to share my Workout playlist. “Turn Down for What” never fails to get me amped up, and I also added a lot of NSYNC to my playlist recently… (no shame here).

Since NFL is back, could you watch the games while running? I watched college football on the treadmill this past week at the gym, and it totally distracted me.

I’m loved the Mindy premiere – what did you think?

    1. Kristina

Jess! I am on Spotify and would love to hear your playlist. How do I find you?

I loved the Mindy premiere too! I thought it was great and now I have so many questions about what this season is going to cover. I wonder if they will get married this season or just focus on the funny stories that come along with being a first time parent along with a little bit of wedding planning. I hope they don’t move the fertility clinic to the background because I loved that Mindy was starting her own business.

Congrats on the win and getting that LR in (plus some). Oh my Washington Football team 🙁
