Running Related Thoughts (Of Course!)

Today I’m coming at you with five thoughts!

1. I’m Toast!

Last night I got in a nice and toasty run at my favorite place!

esdfsdf

I have no idea why but my skin is looking ROUGH so I am sparing your eyeballs and giving you a black and white photo of me coolin’ off post-run.

2. More Adnan!

This run went by SO QUICKLY because I started listening to Undisclosedthe new podcast about the Adnan Syed case! If you were a fan of the first season of Serial I cannot recommend this podcast more!

(Meg, the lawyer from The View from LL2 is one of the hosts!)

3. Please Join!

I created the marathoner Facebook group I promised that I would, and while I would LOVE to talk about running, I would also love to talk about the Adnan case!!!

Seriously guys, join this group and let’s talk about all the new info from Undisclosed that we learned while listening to the podcast while running (because I know you’re doing that too!). I need to talk about the Hae’s Day episode with you all!

We can also discuss McFarland USA! I just watched it over the weekend!

4. Go McFarland!

* Walt Disney Studios kindly sent me this awesome DVD! Wow, I must be a big time blogger now! 😀

If you haven’t seen this movie yet, I seriously encourage you to grab a running buddy and watch it asap! It’s such a great, uplifting story about a coach who puts together an unlikely latino cross country team that goes on to win a state title. Even better than winning states, all of the guys got accepted into college, something that likely wouldn’t have happened if not for track.

The movie is based on a true story and there are quite a few interviews on YouTube where you can learn what the real life people the characters were based upon are up to today. (I also found original photos of the beach scene from the movie here and track photos here!)

The cool thing is that quite a few of the team members are still living in McFarland and involved with the school and the track team!

One of the track members who went on to become a writer, wrote this poem while he was part of the team:

We fly like blackbirds
through the orange groves
floating on a warm wind
When we run we own the earth
the land is ours
We speak the birds language
not immigrants no more
not stupid Mexicans
when we run our spirits fly;
we speak to the gods
when we run, we are the gods.

So powerful – every time I read or hear it I tear up!

Go watch this movie!

5. Meow Meow

And finally I leave you with a picture of the laziest sack of potatoes I have ever met. If he’s not sleeping … he’s thinking about sleep! 😀

In my next life I want to come back as a pampered house cat!

It’s so good! Looks like it’ll be available through Netflix as a DVD (not streaming) on June 30th!

THANK YOU for pointing me in the direction of those Podcasts. I was listening to the Serial ones on my runs but got scared so had to stop. I can’t wait to listen to these 😀

    1. Kristina @ Blog About Running

Haha I know what you mean! I couldn’t listen to the Serial when I was running in the dark!

  3. Susan

Rick & I saw McFarland USA in the theaters and LOVED it. Talk about an inspiring movie for all ages. I want to see it again now that it is on DVD.

I will join your group! I am not a marathoner but I think that will be OK. Just your “run 3- 5 miles per session” kind of gal. No hills, tempo runs, speedwork, etc. But I love to talk about running!!

P.S. do you know of any good podcasts that are more health related? I am not sure I could listen to a story but I could listen to something on health and wellness (more of a news type pod cast)

    1. Kristina @ Blog About Running

      Thanks for joining Susan! 🙂

I actually don’t listen to any other podcasts! Listening to Serial was my first foray into podcasts on the run, and this is my second. I have listened to the Talk Ultra podcast at work before though. The host, Ian Corless, does some great interviews with the elites!

      1. Susan

Thanks! I will check those out.

  4. Molly

I joined! Also, I didn’t know that the podcast was available – thanks for the hint!

I know you’ll really like McFarland – it’s such a positive, uplifting movie all the way around! Even if I wasn’t a runner I think I would have liked it a lot!

  10. polly @ mytimerunner

Oh, I do need to check out McFarland USA……. didn’t realize it was out!!!!!

I have never listened to a pod cast while running, may need to try! I usually run without any music or anything. You have given me a recommendation on possibly my first podcast to litem to! That is when doctor releases me back to running from this bum foot that I have! Ugh

    1. Kristina @ Blog About Running

Yes! Start with Serial and then make your way onto Undisclosed. I had never listened to a podcast on the run before Serial, but it’s so great! The run just passes by in the blink of an eye because you’re so focused on the story – especially a story like Adnan’s where every small detail is important!

  11. Cocomama

I took my nephews to the drive-in theatre to see McFarland USA. BEST MOVIE OF THE YEAR!! So glad I went with a bunch of young boys.

Thanks for the heads up on DISCLOSED! I need to catch up ASAP!

Another friend of mine has turned me onto ESPN’s 30 for 30 series. Just found that there is a running episode, Into the Wind about Terry Fox running across the entire country of Canada!
