Scorching Hot

This weekend was all about catching up on my personal life and getting organized. I think I did a pretty good job!

On Saturday Adam and I hit up the gym and I did some core work, ran 30 easy minutes on the treadmill and did lots of stretching. My hip is feeling almost 100% these days and I’m loving it!

^ Look at my thigh gap! LOL

I was recently reading about a popular healthy living blogger who apparently has been photoshopping all of her pictures for at least the last year if not longer. Her readers rightfully feel deceived, but I hope that most readers know that almost every blogger willย often select shots that are taken from flattering angles.

You know I don’t have a thigh gap and I also didn’t photoshop that photo above. My body is just situated in a wayย that gives a specific appearance. Maybe this is a bad example because I’m not standing up, but I think you get what I mean.

I don’t think it’s just bloggers who are guilty of posting flatting photos, I think almost everyone who posts to social media does this. Is it bad? I don’t know. On one hand I think we shouldn’t be ashamed of how we look, and on the other hand I appreciate that bloggers take the time to sort through picturesย and select the best one when there are multiple options available.

Anyway, I won’t be posting any more thigh gap inspired photos becauseย I think it’s ridiculous to fake it… and I apologize for going off on this little tangent!

After the gym Adam and I hightailed it over to meet family for a birthday dinner.

20150425_180155

We brought a bouquet of flowers as part of the gift. I don’t know why I don’t do this more often. Flowers are so pretty and I think they really brighten up a room. Plus, I think people feel special when they receive flowers, I know I do (hint hint, Adam!). ๐Ÿ™‚

Sunday morning Adam and I planned toย get up early, but when we told Cecil it was time to get up he gaveย us a look like we were crazy:

20150426_104548

So we all slept in until noon instead :).

It was a scorcher of a day yesterday – we hit a high of 95 degrees in the mid afternoon!

Screen Shot 2015-04-26 at 8.51.58 PM

When I finally headed out for my run at 6:30pm it was still 90 degrees with a feels like temp of 100 degrees.

When Ali said we officially skipped spring in Florida this year she was right!

20150426_191329

Since I’ve mostly been running on the treadmill this past week my body didn’t handle the heat well at all.

I love running at the beach in the evenings – and I’m not a morning person at all – but this upcoming week I’m going to try running in the mornings when it’s a bit cooler.

20150426_192511

I’ve been getting home from work really late so I think re-arranging my running schedule temporarily will be good all around… even if the thought of getting up in the 5am hour makes me CRINGE!

Is it starting to warm up where you are? Are you running in shorts now or still in long tights?ย

IMPORTANT: Can you recommend a running skirt that doesn’t have built-in shorts?ย Or that has 5-6in inseam on the built-in shorts?ย I currently wear Sparkle Athletic skirts but would like to branch out.ย

I definitely choose the photos of myself that I think are most flattering. Not just with my size but also with my hair, makeup etc. I think that’s what most people would do, right? Haha.

Have you checked out Athleta for running skirts? Ive never tried them but it seems like everyone raves about them.

I thought so too but some people commenting about the situation seemed to think working your angles too much was a bad thing? IDK man, I’m all about those angles! haha

I was on the Athleta website poking around last night. I’m nervous that some of their skirts that have longer inseams also have very long skirt lengths. I don’t want the skirt to go down to my knees. I’m not that modest lol!

So exciting you got your singlet!!! I know I was excited when I got mine from St. Jude! It makes the whole thing seem so much more….real?!
95??? ummmm yeah that would be the death of me! We are still 50’s here in Indiana and I am ok with that. I ran in some warmer weather over the weekend and I forgot how much it changes things!

Now I am DYING to know who has been photoshopping their photos! Methinks I will have to hit up google here in a second…

Yes, I pick the most flattering photos. I agree, I think everyone does! I mean, I have seriously looked 5 months pregnant in one photo and then like my normal self in another photo. Obviously I will choose the one with the better angle. But I have never slimmed myself in a photo. The biggest thing I do, is if it is a photo I really like but my skin looks bad, I will make it a black and white photo then you can’t see all the splotches.

Yep, we’re talking about the same person since I read about it on GOMI too. I wasn’t that upset about the photoshopping thing because I think the blogger clearly has so many issues she’s not dealing with properly, but it does piss me off that she lied about her running paces! Like… why? Sigh.

Glad your hip is feeling better! It’s funny, I think you and I have switched places when it comes to temps. Like this winter I laughed when you said 50 degrees was freezing, you’re going to laugh when I say that I saw this forecast for my race on Saturday and it said a high of 72 and I was like “oh shoot, that’s gonna be so hot!!”

Social media is designed to be more of a showcase of our lives than an honest mirror of them, so it makes sense that we all try to pick out the most flattering photos of ourselves. Although when it comes to Facebook I’ve pretty much given up – everyone who knows me already knows what I look like so I’m not fooling anyone, lol. I tend to not post photos of myself because I just really do not photograph well and every pic of me looks so gross, but I understand the need to want to hide flaws. However, I think there’s a difference between trying to spruce up your photos to look more presentable and trying to pretend you’re something you’re not.

Colorado has been having some RAIN which I am loving because awhile back I got a running/rain jacket that I told Rick I would never get to wear (it hardly rains in Colorado) and now I have gotten to wear it about 5 times. It’s bright orange and I love it–helps me to be seen when I am out running in the dark. Since I always run in the morning before the sun, I do not handle the heat well at all. It’s been about 46 degrees which is just fine by me!

So glad your hip is feeling better! I hadn’t heard about that blogger but cannot believe that! I bet there was a controversy! And you are right, in some cases you don’t even need Photoshop and just need a certain angle. I can easy make myself do “before” and “after” pictures in the mirror just with my posture to amuse myself, ha ha. I don’t think it’s wrong to choose the most flattering pictures, but I don’t always, like when I’m doing product reviews and want to show how something fits. In that case, I’m pretty honest and will say, “You can see it’s not flattering on me.” Other times, I choose pictures because of the lighting/quality regardless of whether they’re the most flattering. About running skirts, I have a lot of very long-length skirts from Athleta, but unfortunately they have none right now in tall sizes. All mine are from last year. The skirt I ordered from Skirt Sports with the 5″ inseam is the Gym Girl Ultra. But somewhere on their site they list the lengths of all their skirts. I think Happy Girl might be the longest. Good luck finding one!

  17. Ali @ Hit the Ground Running

I KNOW! Yesterday I kept thinking about how it’s still going to get almost 10 degrees hotter during the height of the summer. I know we’ll eventually get used to it though. I agree that photoshopping might be going a bit far but I certainly won’t post a picture that I don’t think is a little flattering. And I agree most bloggers do that and I don’t see a thing wrong with it. Photoshopping is a bit much though.

That’s the downside of training during the summer down here. In the early morning the temp. is cooler but the humidity is higher and in the evening the temp is hotter but the humidity is lower. There’s really no better choice!

Cecil is the most adorable ๐Ÿ™‚

I think the photo choice thing is tricky. Clearly photoshopping every single picture is somewhat deceitful, but everyone censors the photos they show of themselves to a certain extent. There IS such a thing as a bad photo or a super unflattering one. Maybe the problem lies when it isn’t just a matter of choosing the best photo of a bunch, or always eliminating the ones that have super bad resting b face (I do this, I have a serious case of RBF), but when someone systematically chooses and edits photos in order to represent themselves differently. Then again, I’m guilty of that as well – I have many tattoos but I choose not to reveal them on my blog or social media. So maybe my point is that I think we need to think about people’s intentions behind why they edit or censor photos. A blogger who is always editing to look much thinner and possibly contributing to making others feel bad, is a different sort of thing, I think, than someone choosing not to reveal a series of regrettable tattoos or a particularly unflattering photo.

I agree with your assessment 100%. The blogger I’m referencing had (and maybe currently has) an eating disorder, so I understand why she photoshopped her pictures. I don’t think her intentions were ever to harm anyone or that she wanted anyone to feel bad about themselves. I think it was all about controlling her own appearance and making herself feel comfortable. #ArmchairPsychologist
