Slow & Steady

We’re halfway through the week! And what a week it’s been!

Work has been a whirlwind for me, and I didn’t even have a new Mindy Project episode to look forward to last night!

1. Yesterday after work I just did a really short run – but I ran it straight through with no walking breaks – and it felt right. #SlowAndSteady

The other day I wrote about how hard it is for me to control my pacing, but by eliminating walking breaks I was able to really dictate the pace the whole time.

I’m going to try to permanently break free of walking intervals over the next little while.

2. I ordered a sampler kit of Justin’s nut butter……. (ugh) I’ve been hesitant to try it because I just can’t reconcile spending $10+ on a jar of something called “Justin’s nut butter,” but I was curious to find out what all the hype is about.

So far I’ve only tried the vanilla peanut butter and it was eh. I’m pretty excited to try the chocolate almond butter and the honey peanut butter though!

3. I saw my neighbor and his little kid (baby?) yesterday and I asked, “how old is he now?” My neighbor’s response, “she’s 20 months.” I was so embarrassed!!!! In my defense the little girl was wearing a gender neutral outfit and has short hair.

I really just should have said, “how old is the baby now?” instead of inserting my foot into my mouth!

I’m sorry neighbor, I don’t know anything about kids!!!

4. This bum needs to get a job.

5. Nicole BQ’d over the weekend in what can only be my favorite BQ story ever. In 2006 she ran her first marathon in over 6 1/2 hours and now, 14 marathons later, she has her BQ!

How awesome is that?! Way to go Nicole!

Do you buy Justin’s fancy nut butter? If so, which is your favorite flavor? 

– Honestly, I’d like to be able to bring the little packets on the run with me as a supplement to my chomps. I’ve tried PB Gu and … I just don’t like any Gus.

    Slow and steady is the way to get ready (sounds like it doesn’t make much sense, but it does!).
    I’ve never tried Justin’s.. Always wanted to, but every time I just end up with my good old PB2 haha 🙂 Those little portion bags are so smart though, easy to bring with you in your purse/bag. Please let me know the verdict of the other flavors aswell 😀
    Don’t feel too embarrassed about the he/she baby thing haha 🙂 I work at the “babysitter” thing at my local gym and I used to do this ALL the time hahaha. Now I tend to just do some random talk-to-babies-voice and ask the kid “well hello there cutie, how old are you” or “whats your name” or something, even though it’s obvious it can’t answer me, the parents think it’s just cute and answer everything. And I hate when people do the month-thing OMG. A couple weeks ago I asked this one lady how old her kid was. She said 26 months… are you serious? He is 2, okay? hahah I will never understand the brains of parents. But hey, it’s not your fault they dress their baby in gender neutral clothes 😉

      Yes!!! I am so with you on the month thing! I really think after the first birthday you should start using years!

      … My cat is currently 87 months! 😉

      I’m saving up the Justin’s packets for the “right moment” since they are expensive little suckers, haha! I will go try the chocolate almond butter for dessert tonight and let you know how it goes!

      Agreed!!! I am excited to try these other nut butters for the first time, but I think good ol peanut butter will always have my heart. It’s basically the perfect food! 😉

      Thank you! I am excited to see what it does with my pace. Yesterday I know I was holding myself back because it’s been a while since I’ve done a run without walk breaks and I wanted to make sure I finished, but at the end I still had so much energy and my legs felt like they were just getting started. Next time I’ll definitely give myself more leeway to run a bit faster.

      I need to look up if any other peanut / nut butters come in little packets. I think that’s the only part that’s really intriguing me because it seems like an easy way to bring them on the run!

    Hahaha, your comment on Justin’s Nut Butter – too funny. (Also, everyone’ s obsession with “nut butters” and calling them “nut butters” is hilarious to me, but maybe I have the humor of a 12-year-old boy.) I like JNB but wouldn’t spend more on it. I occasionally pick up the packets for out-of-town pre-race prep.

      You and me both! I think if it was just a regular brand name like Asics Nut Butter it wouldn’t be so bad, but since they use a guy’s name it just cracks me up. I’m glad I’m not the only one snickering over it! 🙂

      Yes! I found it SO much easier to pace myself without the walking breaks. I know what paces I need to be at during my run / walk intervals to hit my right overall split times, but the moment shifts make it harder to really my targets super accurately. I know some people are really good at it, but apparently I am not one of those people! 🙂

      Haha, I think the opposite! I think since he is a cat he has a certain level of entitlement that tells him he doesn’t need a job!

      I order his canned food in bulk because he demands a certain type that is fairly expensive even in bulk… but every time I place an order I tell him he needs to get a job to help pay for it! 🙂 I am a crazy cat lady!

    We tried Carb Boom during the Detroit Half Marathon and it worked out well. The one I liked best tasted like the inside of a McDonalds Apple Pie but wasn’t as sweet.

      Oh, I’ve never heard of Carb Boom before. I just clicked over to their website and that banana apple one sounds really good! I’ll have to see if I can find some packets at my local running store the next time I go. Thanks for the heads up!

    Easing back in after the marathon is the right way to go. Plus you have a great plan by eliminating the walk breaks.

    I never go to comment on your half marathon goals post, but I’m so excited for you! I just KNOW you are going to crush your goal, no question. You’ve gotten so much stronger from the marathon, and the fact that you got a half PR in the middle of a freakin marathon says a LOT abut how ready you are! Go get it girl!!

      Thanks Hanna! I do feel ready! I think the cooler weather in Portland during the first few miles helped me get off to a quicker start, but I hope race day in Jan. will also be a little bit cool. Crossing my fingers for something in the 60s, although last year at my half in February it was in the 80s. You just never know what you’re going to end up with here! So unpredictable!

    lol! I would totally do something like this! oops!

    I’ve tried Justin’s nut butters before. They’re good, but I don’t think they’re great. I can’t stand GU either. I prefer Clif Shot Bloks and lately I’ve been taking out mini Lara bars (the ones that are 100 calories each). My stomach handles those really well on long runs, so I’m thinking they might be my new marathon fuel.

      Oh I love that! I’ve never thought about taking a mini bars on the run but it makes so much sense. I’m going to have to try that. It seems like alternating between the mini bars and chomps would be a nice mixup on super long runs! Thank you!!

    Interesting about the nut butter. It seems like these designer nut butters are so IN right now and I just prefer good ol’ JIF or Publix brand lol.

      I hear ya! I usually just buy the Smart Balance peanut butter… and actually I’m pretty sure I will keep on buying it. I wanted to try the little samples of Justins to see if they could work during a run, but I think the answer is no. I tried a flavor last night that I really like, but it made me way too thirsty!

      I hope I can make the no walking breaks thing stick. I eliminated walking breaks last year when the weather got cooler, but then I brought them back in as it warmed up during the spring/summer. Hopefully this year I can tough it out and get used to running straight through no matter what the weather is!

      Nah, it’s just a sweeping way to talk about the various types of butters … peanut butter, almond butter, hazelnut butter. Last night was my first time trying almond butter and I thought it tasted pretty much the same as peanut butter. Which is a good flavor, haha!

      Cornbread crackers? I’ve never heard of those before! I’m celiac so I probably wouldn’t be able to eat them, but that does sound really good! 🙂

    great post! are you going to train to run all your race distances without walking? or just the short run? I’m trying to increase my running intervals slowly over time. I did 4:1s this morning…aiming for 5:1 sessions throughout my LRs by the end of the year and 10:1 sessions by the end of next year.

      Way to go on the 4:1s! You run at a good clip even with the walking breaks! And I am really impressed with your ability to log such even splits doing intervals! I wish I could do that! I don’t think I pay close enough attention to my Gamin during runs though, I get caught up in thinking about this or that and forget to watch my pace!

    I love the BQ story, so maybe if I get off my dupa in 8 years I may BQ too 🙂 I am still afraid of that distance…I have never had that brand of PB, I use PB2 in shakes, stuff is awesome 😉 Looook at you go, no walk breaks 🙂 Awesome job. It took me a long time to get 3 miles down and then it seemed a lot easier adding in the miles slowly.

    I am definitely particular when it comes to the Justin’s Nut Butter flavors. I really like the Maple Almond Butter and Chocolate Hazelnut Butter, but have to eat them before I start running. I tried using them instead of GU on my long runs, but had a really difficult time getting them down. They are pretty thick and I had to use a lot of water when eating them. I really want to try the peanut butter cups!!

    And in your defense, all babies look like boys!! Good for you for noticing the baby because I wouldn’t have even acknowledged a neighbor’s baby before I had kids of my own. The funny thing is that I’m SUPER careful with dogs…I totally check out the underside before I tell the human he/she is cute. I was a dog lover before I ever had kids!

    Week 2 is tomorrow for LA Road Runners. Running with a group is the most awesome thing EVAR!!! I probably can’t choke down peanut butter on a run but those little jelly packets from McDonalds are totally awesome.
