Some Days It’s Just Like That!

Yesterday was HOT. Blazing hot. ?

I have a big window near my desk at work and I could feel the heat radiating through it. I was seriously warm even with the a/c on. It’s actually kind of funny that a couple of days ago I said I felt acclimated to the heat. That was so wrong!

Having gone through three summers writing this blog now I would say I am going to complain about the heat approximately 82959345234234201 more times before February when we finally get a couple of cold days :).

You know what’s weird? On Monday I took a complete rest day and yesterday my calves were KILLING ME. I almost didn’t even notice the heat at first because my calves were so tight.

This was the first time in about two weeks that I took a complete rest day and it’s also the first time in two weeks that my calves have felt like this. I seriously think any time I take a total rest day this happens but I can’t figure out why. I really want Monday to be a total rest day but I’m honestly kind of scared of taking the day off now.

Here is my “I’m-grateful-this-whole-ordeal-is-over face.”

Do you notice increased tightness after a complete rest day? Or is that just me?

    If you’re used to exercising every day, then I think it totally makes sense that your calves would feel tight after a rest day. It’s the same reason we feel a little stiffer in the AM after sleeping all night – the lack of activity made our muscles start to tighten.

    I love that your tightness distracted you from the heat! Honestly, if I had to pick one of those two things to bother me during a run…I really can’t decide which one!

      You know, I actually wake up feeling pretty loose most of the time. I usually feel the most stiff at the end of the work day when I’ve been at my desk for far too long! I hate that.

      I would definitely choose being distracted by the heat. Nothing annoys me more than super tight calves!

    I’ve noticed a similar feeling in my quads lately, if it’s a rest day I will notice tightness but if I run they loosen up.

    I most definitely feel tightness after a test day. That’s why those shake out and recovery runs are so important. They warm up the muscles that are stiff.

    Sometimes my ITB hurts on a rest day but not on a hard day! I am sure you have thought of this, but perhaps a walk would keep your muscles loose on your rest days? Get Cecil a leash and it could be bonding time. 😉

      I’ve tried to walk Cecil on a leash (I’ll look for pics!) but he’s not a big fan! We tried when he was a kitten but it never caught on. I want to adopt a savannah cat if possible when the time is right for another cat because they tend to be natural leash walkers!

      I think you’re right – a walk on a rest day is a good idea. The last couple of weeks I had been doing the elliptical on rest days and that helped keep things loose. I might just need to make sure I get one of those two things in!

    I don’t mind the complaints about the heat because it lets me know I’m not alone. Also, I think those of us in Florida, Arizona, and various southern states have a total right to complain about the heat because it’s just BRUTAL where we are!!

    My calves don’t hurt much on total rest days, but I DO get stiff/sore in my legs after a day of rest. Usually in my quads or hamstrings. Maybe it’s just DOMS setting in or something.

    I laughed out loud at the Harry Potter joke–hilarious! 🙂 I always feel a little tight at the beginning of runs after rest days–it typically goes away quickly, but it is noticeable.

      Hi Rachael! I always buy the Under Armour Heat Gear Compression Shorts in 6″. I like the 6″ versions because you can pull them down and make them long (6″) if it’s colder or very humid (to protect against chafing). But you can also pull them up a bit and make them shorter on days when you want that. I probably have them at about the 4.5″ range most of the time, but I like that I can pull them down if I feel the beginnings of chafing!

    My whole body feels a little off after a rest day. Just not wanting to get moving. But after a few minutes it all comes together. I have been horrible about foam rolling lately and really need to get on it.
    I have that same ua top in a couple of colors. I love it. However, I can’t stand to wear sleeves when it is hot out. How do you do it? I have been dying up here and then you talk about your hot runs and I am like shit! I am just a big heat wimp! haha!
