Speedwork is Doing Its Job!

Hey! Whoa, I went MIA from the running blog world yesterday. Nothing crazy happened, I just needed a night to watch the Heat play and relax with my guy :).

Since my last post I’ve gotten in a couple of really nice runs!

In fact, last night I got home from work really late and the little devil on my shoulder said it would be okay to just skip the run but I AM SO GLAD I DIDN’T LISTEN!

Check this out!!!!

I’ve run an 11 minute mile before a few times, but never two consecutive ones! That’s good stuff!!

Granted I did take a pitstop break in the middle there, but I’m still feeling really good about my progression as a runner so far this winter! I’m also feeling good about my upcoming 5K and achieving a PR.

It probably helped that the weather yesterday was the coldest of the year so far:

I don’t know how you cold weather runners do it, my legs felt like icicles yesterday!

Outside of running, Adam and I have gotten some upsetting news recently. As I alluded to a couple of weeks ago, we are planning to adopt a retired greyhound from a local rescue group! They’re great dogs for people who live in condos because they sleep SO MUCH and they’re good for people with dog allergies because they don’t have a double coat.

One of the cute guys up for adoption at our local greyhound rescue!

Unfortunately when we went to get the paperwork from our condo association we were told that renters are no longer allowed to have dogs!

Whaaaat?

When we moved in we signed a contract that said we could have up to two pets! Apparently the bylaws changed and that’s no longer the case.

Our landlord has put in an appeal to the board of directors of the association and we’re currently awaiting the verdict.

If that doesn’t work out it’s not the total end of the world. Our lease is up soon and we have already researched other apartments in the area that are very dog (and cat) friendly. It’s just a bummer because now we very likely will not be able to bring our doggie home for the holidays.

We are going to the rescue this weekend for their annual holiday party. I can’t believe I didn’t take any pictures last time, but I will be sure to take some this time!

Keep your fingers crossed for us that the appeal goes through! That would be the best Christmas gift!

What are you hoping for this holiday season?

What’s the best gift you’ve ever given or received?

Haha Im sorry but I can’t help but laugh a little when you said your legs turned to icicles in 55 degrees:)
Hoping everything works out for you guys with the appeal!

      Thanks, Lisa!

It’s so true! When I got home from my run my legs were freezing! Even after I took a hot shower I was still cold!! If I ever move out of Florida I will need to toughen up!

Nice job on to consecutive sub 12s!!!

55 AND YOUR LEGS ARE ICICLES!!!!??? 55 in PA = sports bra. Haha. I am currently all bundled up because the “feels like temp” this morning while I run (which is going to be in about 10 min because we have a 2 hr delay!) is 21 degrees! Problem… I am inside and I am still cold! I think I need to put on some more clothes.

I am so sorry you might not be able to get your pup for the holidays! 🙁 I really hope your appeal goes through. That dog does not know what is coming. He is about to get some LOVIN’!!!

21 degrees! BRRRRR! I would need to use the blowdryer on my entire body to defrost from a run in that weather!

I’ve gone running in the 30s before (one time) up by my mom’s and that was kind of nice because the sun was out. I can’t imagine getting up to run in freezing temps before the sun comes up though! You guys are all so hardcore.

I KNOW! Since I have some time off work this month I thought it would be the perfect time to bring the dog home. Sigh!

You are so right, speed work sucks because it’s hard work but it really does help. Sorry to hear about the puppy situation, if you got a house there would be no problems lol.

I have a few races in the first post if the year I need to sign up for so those are my hopeful gifts.

I know! I would love to buy a house but our zip code is not buyer friendly! I saw this nice townhouse that I thought maybe we could afford but it’s $400,000 … for a townhouse! LOLOLOLOL. That would be all good if we got a 30 yr mortgage I guess but we don’t want to be committed to debt for that long. I am hoping to win the lottery sometime soon so it’ll all work itself out ;).

Nice job on the speed work! 55 is perfect running weather.

    Icicles….you’re killing me over here!!

    • December 11, 2014 / 1:52 pm

I agree!! The weather was really nice to run in, way better than the 80s and 90s! But my legs were so cold when I got home! They didn’t even defrost after a hot shower! I was freezing all night!

I’d love to rescue a greyhound in the future! That is so awesome that you guys are doing that!

And I can’t wait to see you kill your 5K this weekend!!! I bet you’ll be able to hear me cheering all the way from MA that’s how excited I am!

    • December 11, 2014 / 1:55 pm

Greyhounds are such sweet dogs and so so so low key for speedsters who are used to racing!

They apparently don’t love endurance running but they do love going on walks, so as long as I don’t get too fast I think I could get my greyhound to run with me since he can basically just walk at my running pace ;).

  6. December 11, 2014 / 9:48 am

I hope your appeal goes through! When do you think you’ll find out?

Hahaha, I definitely laughed out loud at the 55 degree icicle thing. Then again, I think 80 degrees is hot, so there’s that. 55 degrees is still tank top and shorts weather up north.

Great job on the speedwork! You are getting crazy fast, can’t wait to hear how your 5K turns out!

Technically the next board meeting isn’t until January 21st, but we’re hoping they will have a heart and vote on it before the next meeting. If not, we won’t know until after the meeting :/ .

I’m looking forward to the 5k! I am visualizing good things happening while being surrounded by a bunch of running santas!

  7. December 11, 2014 / 9:54 am

Great job on picking up the pace!! I think it’s really good to do a few runs and just push through a few miles like that, it will help you to know when running the 5K how much you can push 🙂 I love grey hounds, a lady here has one she adopted and the puppy is really sweet. I see them out walking a lot. I hope you get a good decision in the pet dilemma!

    • December 11, 2014 / 1:59 pm

Thanks Karen! I really hope so, too.

I am looking forward to growing the family, haha!

  8. December 11, 2014 / 10:04 am

FIngers crossed that the appeal goes through!!
I am pretty sure the thermostats downstairs in our house are set to 55* at night…:)

    • December 11, 2014 / 2:00 pm

WOW! I would need a heated blanket to sleep in your house! haha

Thanks for keeping your fingers crossed. We’re totally ready to become dog parents! 😉

  9. December 11, 2014 / 10:28 am

Oh no, I hope you can bring the little (big??) guy home!

Oh so jealous of your FL weather right about now. I’m heading to South Florida over Christmas and cannot wait to run outside in shorts and tee!!! …It’s the little things 🙂

    • December 11, 2014 / 2:02 pm

Haha, big guy is probably the right way to put it. The one special guy we have our eye on is 80lbs!

So exciting that you’ll be in the area! You’ll definitely be able to wear shorts and a tee!

  10. December 11, 2014 / 10:35 am

Oh I really hope the appeal goes through! Love that you are rescuing a dog. When I get a dog it will definitely be a rescue!

  11. December 11, 2014 / 11:19 am

Awe. I hope the doggy situation works out for you.!! I got a puppy for Christmas one year, that was pretty awesome. But overall, my husband always gives really good presents. Like last year he gave me a heated blanket and these awesome boots.

Anyways. . Good job on your run.!! Progress is always so nice to see. And it comes slow, so it’s even more rewarding when it happens

    • December 11, 2014 / 2:04 pm

That is the best! When I was a kid I would ask (beg) my parents for a dog every single year for Christmas, my birthday, etc. but they never got me one. Which, in hindsight, was probably smart since I’m really allergic to most of them!

Those are great gifts! You’re lucky to have a husband who is good at picking them out. Adam usually just asks me what I want :).

  12. December 11, 2014 / 3:58 pm

I’m sure that too many tenants with pets allowed their animals to do damage (I’ve seen it happen) – bummer for responsible people like you and Adam!!! I hope the appeal works out so that you can bring your dog home soon!!!

    • December 11, 2014 / 5:33 pm

Yes, we were told that the reason renters cannot have dogs anymore is because some people were allowing their dogs to urinate on the landscaping which was costing the association a lot of money. I personally don’t believe you can really pin this on renters… it’s more of an irresponsible person thing vs. a renter thing. In fact since we were told all of this I have seen one person let her dog urinate on the landscaping multiple times (she walks her dog at the same time I go out for my runs). It’s unfair that she as an owner can have a dog and I cannot even though i would be more responsible.

      🙁

  13. December 11, 2014 / 4:38 pm

Great work with your speedwork and progress Kristina! You are on fire!!
That really sucks about your apartment and them changing the rules re: pets. Really hope you can successfully appeal it seeing as you signed a contract with them?? That’s awesome you’ll be adopting a greyhound. Have you picked a name yet, or will he/she come already named?
All I want for Christmas (and I know it sounds clichéd and a rubbish non-answer) is for my friend and family to be healthy and happy, and for us all to eat, drink and be merry (even if we have to communicate via email and Skype). 🙂

    • December 11, 2014 / 5:36 pm

      Thanks Lou! 🙂

The greyhounds already have names, but I believe we’ll be providing a new name. If we can get the appeal approved we have decided to name our greyhound Justice since we feel like being allowed to have the dog is justice served! haha

Originally, when we first met the dog we really like, we thought we might name him Duke. He totally looks like Duke!

Excellent Christmas wishes! I second all of that!

  14. December 11, 2014 / 7:03 pm

Oh no!!!! Tht is very upsetting. I don’t know anything about contract law, but you’d think your contract would stand. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the appeal goes through.

And yay on your fast miles! You’re going to ock tht 5K!

  15. December 11, 2014 / 7:45 pm

WOOHOO! I love when we see REAL results and know our hard work pays off. You’re going to smash your 5k PR.

I love greyhounds. I especially love Italian greyhounds, but they aren’t really in need of rescuing as much as the regular breed. I think they’re so pretty. They need tons of exercise, so maybe you can run with yours when you get him!

PS, I appreciate the appropriate use of “its” in your title lol…I see so many misused apostrophes I have to give props when I see it done right!

  16. December 12, 2014 / 4:22 am

Nice job with the 11s!! Your icicle description cracked me up!! Sorry to hear about the pet situation at your place, but I am glad to hear your lease is up soon in the event landlord does’t win the appeal. Can’t wait to see more pics of the pup!!

  17. December 12, 2014 / 7:50 pm

I really hope the appeal goes through! I’ve heard greyhounds are great apartment dogs and that rescue ones are super sweet. It would be the best Christmas gift for you and Adam!

And nice work on the speedwork improvements! Your hard work is paying off big time!

  18. December 13, 2014 / 3:23 pm

I’m so sorry to hear about the dog, what a bummer :(:(:( I hope the appeal works!
I don’t have too much on my list, but I do really want a Kindle so some amazon gift cards would be nice on my wallet 🙂 Best gift I gave was for John- he loves the Dodgers I think almost as much as he love me, and the Christmas before we were engaged, I gave him a folder that had an itinerary and all of the reservation confirmations to take him to the Dodgers spring training the following March. He loved it and I’ve never surprised someone so much, so that was pretty cool! 🙂

  19. December 14, 2014 / 10:49 pm

Nice times! Good luck on the dog appeal. Hopefully it goes your way!
