Stronger + Faster!

I’m a little late to the party, but WHAT A GAME on Sunday, eh? Those last five minutes were crazy!

Before we talk about the game, let’s just rewind for a second and head back to Saturday when I got in a nice little 2-miler and an upper body lifting session!

20150201_140637

When it comes to bent-over-rows I typically do 5 x 5 with a 25lb dumbbell and will sometimes do an extra set with a 30 or 35lb dumbbell.

Example of a bent-over row (photo: fitstudio.com).

On Saturday I did a warmup set with a 20lb dumbbell and then did 5 x 5 with a 30lb dumbbell!!!

Watch out guys, I’m hulking out over here!

I also did my two miler at 12:50 pace (13:01, 12:40) without even meaning to. On short, easy runs I usually aim for 13:30+ pace but on Saturday I just went by feel and ended up surprising myself! It was a good workout day for me!

Stronger + Faster #Beastmode (I bet Coach Carroll wishes he could take that play back! I feel so bad for him and Russell Wilson because I really like both of them).

Sunday was all about the long run (7 miles), food prep and watching Tom Brady FOOTBALL!

20150131_171253

It was just a little bit bright out but the weather was a perfect 71 degrees in the morning.

My hip started feeling a little tight at the end of the run, but it’s nothing that a little stretching can’t fix.

20150131_171417

While I was out running Cecil went through the Runner’s World cookbook picking out recipes for the week.

20150201_115021

He had the great idea to make the Long-Run Cake with Peanut Butter Cream Cheese Frosting! According to the cookbook it is vegetarian, low calorie and gluten-free.

20150202_210228

I haven’t made it yet but I already know it’s going to be soooo good!

The rest of my Sunday was spent parked in front of the TV cheering on the Patriots who represented the AFC East well!

Before the game we all filled out a survey predicting things about the game and I got the most predictions right – including final score of the game! Somebody take me to Vegas!

Get any snow where you are over the weekend?
What did you think of the Superbowl Halftime Show? I didn’t love it. I thought Katy’s outfit choices and sets were a bit blah.

Are you kidding about her sets being blah!? lol. I loved the show. I mean, she is what she is. Silly, over the top, but at least she commits.

The Nat’l Anthem…. ugh. I am critical of that kind of stuff. I don’t like when people make it too fancy. They should just SING it.

BEASTMODE ROW GIRL. I have always been envious of your rows. 🙂

I like over the top! I think Lady Gaga does over the top really well and I love that she goes all-in. I also realllly like Katy Perry’s songs, but I thought the beach set felt like she was getting ready to record a TV show for toddlers. Riding the tiger thing on the way in was cool, that was the part I liked the best!

I agree on the Nat’l Anthem. Idina obviously has an incredibly voice and it would stand out even if she went the traditional route!

No snow around here…we got some rain and flurries and it was COLD. Like so windy and cold. I need a plane ticket to Florida ASAP.

Super bowl was here in AZ this year. Tons of people. Seattle brought their weather foot most of the weekend but by midday Sunday, the weather was perfect. No snow :).

I thought of you and the Mrs. this weekend and wondered how crazy AZ might have gotten with everyone rushing in for the game! I know Miami gets really crazy when it’s held here. Even though I live a good 30 mins from the stadium all of our hotels and everything get packed. The next time it’s held here I really want to go!

  4. sam @ grapefruit & granola

I didn’t love Katy’s performances. I thought her opening and closing numbers were predictable and I completely agree with you about the outfits. I thought she could have come up with a much better “fire” themed costume for her opening set. I loved Missy Elliot, though!!

YES, I so so so agree on the fire themed costume. Even Adam mentioned that he thought it looked cheap.

Missy was great, although I felt like I could barely see her. I wish they had lit her up a little bit more!

I think this was the first year that I was actually disappointed by the performance. The artists usually knock it out of the park!

The BEST was when it was NSYNC, Britney and Aerosmith! LOVED that one!

  6. Staci @ Hoosier Running Mom

I wasn’t thrilled with Katy either. It was just too animated, like over rehearsed or something.
You can totally kick my ass in the gym!!! I am such a wimp! I am working on it though now that I am going on a regular basis!!

Well you would kick my ass and then some on a run, so it all evens out, haha!

With Katy I didn’t like that I couldn’t tell if she was lip syncing or not. I guess it was probably a combination of live and lip syncing. I like when artists either commit to signing live the whole time or lip sync it all the way and do a lot of dancing! haha

  7. Jennifer @ Running on Lentils

I am loving those pics of you running in sunny 71 degrees. It was 9 degrees when I ran in the dark this morning. But, I’m not complaining. 🙂 I also love the title of this blog post. YES! Congrats on great progress! The game was really good, but I also didn’t like Katy Perry’s show. I thought it was too juvenile. I liked Missy Elliot though.

    1. Kristina @ Blog About Running

Completely agree that it was juvenile, but then I wondered if perhaps her core fan base is quite young? I like listening to her songs but I definitely don’t follow her very closely. I think that might be the case for a lot of people over 25… or even over 18.

      9 degrees! Ouch!

  8. Lizzy

Lifting, running, yummy food and football, looks like you had a great weekend!

I didn’t get to watch the game because I was snowed in in Indiana and the internet crapped out 🙁 so sad. I watched some highlights on youtube yesterday though. I kinda felt the same way about the halftime show. It was both totally over the top and yet kind of strangely low energy at the same time. Disappointing.

It was basically my perfect weekend 🙂

How awful that your Internet went out during the game! I think Adam would have literally died if that happened to us, haha!

  9. Jess

Way to crush your strength training and run! Also, your long run weather looks AMAZING. I’m ready for winter to be over.

Meh, the game kind of bored me. (You know me and my anti-NFL thing…) UNTIL THE END. Holy cow. I enjoyed the halftime show, but I love Katy Perry and the Missy Elliott appearance rocked. I think the Katy Perry show is overall less entertaining than other performers since she can’t dance.

Thank you! Our weather this week is really weird! On Monday it was 86 degrees. Today the high was 72 degrees and I think tomorrow or Thurs. it’s going to be 85 again but right after it’s going back down into the low 70s! Weird but I’ll take it since that means the weather will be nice for my long run this weekend 😉

Missy was awesome! I’m glad Katy brought her out. I feel bad saying it, but i had totally forgotten all about Missy!

  10. Hanna

I’m with you on Katy Perry. Honestly, I think she just tried way too hard. I really like Lizzy’s comment that it was both over-the-top and surprisingly low energy at the same time. I couldn’t have said it better. I’m not a fan of over-the-top-ness in performances to begin with but if you’re gonna go there, it should complement the performer not completely overshadow them. Katy just totally drowned in her own props and theatrics.

Especially when you compare it to Missy, who had so much energy and her performance felt so much fresher and more natural. I wanted her to stay out!

We got a BLIZZARD here on Sunday! Kevin and I couldn’t even go to our Superbowl party across town, and doing a shakeout jog before the game was out of the question!

YES! Loved Missy’s energy. I forgot how much she could bring it! haha

It’s a shame that the beach set was so hokey because I love the Califormia Gurls song! I wish they had brought Snoop out for it!

Wow, a blizzard! That’s so crazy. I honestly cannot even imagine what experiencing a blizzard would be like. I hope you are drinking lots of tea or hot chocolate and staying warm!

  11. Kim

Wow – you are lifting in beast mode for sure!!! I’m not a huge Katy Perry fan to begin with but I thought the whole performance was geared to kids!! I was really happy with the game though – so often it isn’t even worth watching!!!

    1. Kristina @ Blog About Running

Kim, I’m so with you! I really felt like it was geared towards kids as well. I know they don’t want another Janet Jackson moment to happen, but I thought Katy could have really had a more sophisticated set.

  12. cheryl

LOVED THE GAME! Not a fan of the half time show, too much of a caricature thing going on for me…
Yes, we got MORE SNOW this weekend–15″ more. So in the past week we have tallied up 52″…
Not jealous of your weather yet, give me a couple of weeks and you may find me driving south!

FIFTY TWO?! Holy cow! Well, i shouldn’t be too surprised since those pictures you’ve been sharing have shown quite the pile up!

The game was totally stressing me out in the third quarter, but the ending was such a fun Superbowl ending. I would take this type of game over last year’s blowout any day!

  13. LeAnne@thisismyfaster

I know I’m probably in the minority but I didn’t watch the game or the half time show on Sunday. After my long run I had so much work to catch up on plus I did some “family time” stuff and before I knew it bedtime was calling. I’m having some tightness in my hip also. Yesterday I felt better but I noticed it again today (and I didn’t even run this morning!). Gonna watch it and see.

  14. Liv @ Healthy Liv

The half time show seemed like it was supposed to be family-friendly, which would be understandable after people got upset about Beyonce’s performance a year or two ago for being too provocative. Do you remember that?!
Liv @ Healthy Liv recently posted…Refocusing My RunningMy Profile

    1. Kristina @ Blog About Running

I didn’t realize Beyonce’s performance was considered provocative! I remember the whole nip slip thing with Janet Jackson (yikes), but I thought Beyonce’s performance was great! The main thing I remember is that there was a Destiny’s Child reunion which was awesome! haha

  15. Cocomama

I liked Katy flying around on that comet/firework thingy… that’s pretty much it. 😉 But I love her otherwise & love her songs.

Hell NO snow here! We ran our 18 mile long run on the Venice boardwalk this weekend…furthest thing on our minds was the freezing temps in the East (sorry east coast peeps).

    1. Kristina @ Blog About Running

I love her songs too! California Gurls is a staple on almost all of my running playlists and who doesn’t love Roar?! haha

Way to go on the 18!!! Ahhh running along the boardwalk sounds awesome!

  16. Heather @ GirlGoesRunning

We actually got hit by a mega blizzard yesterday and school was cancelled today. 😀 I’m so trying that long run bread!!!!
