Summer Lovin’ + a Small Rant

Hola! Yesterday was a rest day for me, so I don’t have any running news to report. Instead I thought I could share some products and things I’m really loving this summer!

I bought all of these products myself! None of the companies mentioned paid me to promote their products. In fact I’ve left the FitFluential community because I’ve decided I’m just not interested in 99% of the products they make available for review, and I cannot stand the constant harping on about growing your blog and social media numbers to get free products.

Honestly, the best offers I’ve ever received have come directly to me and were not brokered through Fitfluential. Working in the marketing industry, as someone who oversees online influencer campaigns, I can say that none of the better brands I work with would ever go through a third party network. The awesome brands I work with want to create unique campaigns and collaborate directly with the influencers.

I know many of my favorite bloggers are part of the Fitfluential community and that’s cool if that’s your jam – I’ve just recently realized it’s not mine – and I don’t want it to be a part of K-BAR going forward.

(K-BAR = Kristina’s Blog About Running, haha).

Okay, tangent OVER! Sorry about that! On to the faves!

Favorite Training Journal:

I’ve just started using Training Peaks as my online training log and so far I like it a lot! It includes space for all of the normal training metrics like distance and pace, but has a dedicated spot for a workout description and post-activity notes. If you work with a coach this is a really nice option for sharing detailed information.

Training Peaks is great, but there is really something to be said about putting pen to paper. That’s one of the main reasons I’m back to using my Believe training journal!

After my half marathon racing season I stopped using this religiously. I wasn’t following a super regimented training plan and my weekly mileage was low so I didn’t want to waste any space. Now that I’m back to a structured plan I’m happy to be writing in this pretty little book again! My Believe journal is definitely my favorite!

Favorite Thing to Write in My Training Journal With

Okay, this is definitely a made up category, but I did blog the other day about my new Kate Spade pen set and I am LOVING it!

I was going to save “So Well Composed” for a while since it’s my favorite from the set, but I figured … cape diem! Why wait?

It’s really just your typical ball point pen, but I love the purple color and I smile every time I look down and see “so well composed.” It’s the little things, right? 🙂

Favorite Nail Polish

I’ve blogged before about being a total nail polish loyalist. Once I find a color I like I will wear it over and over and over again until I can’t stand the sight of it anymore. Right now the color I’m loving is Blink Pink from Sally Hansen’s fast dry line.

20150704_144037

I may have blogged about this color like a month ago? Yep, still LOVING it and wearing it every single day.

Favorite Sunscreen

Every summer it cracks Adam up when I tell him I’m getting tan because, as he puts it, I’m naturally tan all year long. That may be sort of true, but I still get darker during summer, and have to protect my skin.

Right now I’m loving Neutrogena’s sport face lotion. It’s super lightweight and only has a faint sunscreen-y scent.

20150704_142358

Honestly, this stuff still burns when it runs into your eyes during a super sweaty run. I wear a visor when I run which catches most of my sweat, but after a 2+ hour run I’m bound to have some sweat in my eyes and ouch.

The reason I really love this sunscreen though is that it’s perfect for wearing on days that I don’t wear a liquid foundation. It gives me SPF coverage even if I’m just dusting on a little powder and blush.

Favorite Makeup Product

Not that long ago I wrote about refreshing my makeup collection with some drugstore brands. One of the items I picked up was this blush from NYX in the color Silk (MPB05).

Screen Shot 2015-07-06 at 4.56.32 PM

Screen Shot 2015-07-06 at 4.56.43 PM

It’s a dark peachy color and I think it’s perfect for my skin tone. I don’t know enough about makeup to describe it or tell you why I think it works for me – but I love it!

I apply it with the Real Technique stippling brush which I also love because it’s nice and firm. I don’t actually stipple it on; I use a normal brushing motion.

Favorite Running Product

I am still truly, madly, deeply in love with my Garmin Vívoactive. It does every thing I need it to do: track my runs, track my daily steps, connect with my phone to show me emails and texts… and most importantly it connects with the satellites SO FAST!

20150704_144331

My old Garmin FR220 would sometimes take 5 or more minutes to connect to the satellites even though I always started my run in the same exact spot. The Vívoactive never takes more then 2 seconds! LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE it.

Honestly, I didn’t really think I’d care about the way it syncs with my email and text messages, but now whenever I hear my phone buzz I automatically look down at my wrist. This feature comes in handy when you’re in a work meeting and don’t want to be rude and check your phone, but really want to see what that email or text message is about!

Favorite Thing About This Summer

Getting to work from home for a few weeks!

After the awful commute I dealt with through the spring, I am so so so so happy to be working from home during the month of July. It’s such a nice unexpected summer treat.

Adam works from home (and I guess you could say Cecil does too) so it’s really nice to spend extra time with them – I especially love that we can eat lunch together!

Screen Shot 2015-07-06 at 4.57.15 PMSpeaking of treats, now that we’re past the 4th of July, my birthday is the next big holiday ;). Less than a month to go!

Favorite Upcoming Travel Plans

To celebrate the last year of my 20s we’re heading to the Dominican Republic! I blogged about staying at a specific all-inclusive a while ago, but we actually just made a change and booked at Dreams La Romana!

We won’t be heading to the DR until later in August though, so for my actual birthday I think we’re going to do a weekend in the Bahamas.

We are really lucky to live in South Florida where we have so many tropical destinations just a short drive or flight away. It makes multiple travel opportunities during the year such a breeze (and affordable too)!

None of the products in this post were sponsored; I paid for them myself. I have included a few affiliate links throughout the post which just means if you make a purchase through my link I’ll earn a small commission that will be applied to the cost of maintaining this blog. Thank you!

Do you have a favorite sport sunscreen? Any recommendations for a face sunscreen that doesn’t burn your eyes at all?

I feel so indecisive about how to track my workouts. I love the journal, but I feel like whenever I think about tracking my workouts its never around. But Im not good about keeping detailed notes about my workouts anywhere on my computer. I use the same sunscreen! But if Im not running I use a regular moisturizer with SPF in it.

I used training peaks last year for Boston and loved the daily emails! My sunscreen always makes me break out 🙁 I’m still searching for the perfect one.

Hahahaha K-BAR…love it. Every time I see your Vivoactive it makes me want to look into them. Problem is I have so many miles plugged into my 110.

Sunscreen is usually some kids product since that is what we keep laying around. Honestly don’t use it much, I’m blessed to be naturally tinted 🙂

I agree with you – I haven’t reviewed any products through the Fit Fluential community. I like being a part of it to connect with other bloggers and for social media purposes. A lot of the campaigns just don’t appeal to me and the only products I’ve reviewed have actually been companies that have reached out to me directly too. I remember seeing an email with an opportunity to review some new flatbread product… like I’m not really that interested in reviewing bread, haha! I am checking out that online training log right now!! Looks really cool, thanks for sharing!

I used Training Peaks for my marathon last year! It came with the RW plan I bought. I liked it but, to be honest, I wasn’t that wild about it. Now my primary tracking is in the Believe journal. I just love that journal! I also have my Garmin auto-upload to Strava, but I really hate Strava. It’s so inaccurate and weird. The only reason I keep using it is because so many of my friends are on it!

I’ve never done anything like FitFluential. Actually, until this post, I wasn’t quite sure what it really was. I just have no interest in reviewing products. I started a blog because I want to write. My blog is MY space, not other companies’. At least that’s how I see it, but to each their own!

    I love your rant!! haha

I am seriously going to look into that Garmin because I can’t deal with how long mine takes to connect to satellites. I basically set it in the window for 10 minutes before I even get ready to leave so that I don’t have to stand there foreverrrr waiting for it to connect.

Please keep sharing your love of drugstore brand products! I recently moved to the middle of nowhere and the closest Sephora is an hour away. Tear. I’ve been buying a few drugstore products and have been pleasantly surprised by some. One of my current summer favs is Essie Haute in the Heat. It’s a great pink color for the summer 🙂

    Love the pink!!
I do like the Neutrogena too, and right now I have Clarins, but I tend to break out easy from every thing. I do put on powder with a brush and that seems to help for whatever reason and it doesn’t feel as greasy 🙂
I like your brand name 🙂
I am surprised the 220 was so slow connecting, my 110 does better than that. I love the Vivoactive it looks awesome.
Keeping a work journal is the best. I love to look back at notes and see what was going on.

Your rant took the words right out of my mouth! But so much more eloquently and diplomatically than anything I could say. I would not trust myself to rant about the Blue Apron and General Mills posts I read waaaaay too often from some regular bloggers. UGH.

Super green about of your Vivoactive! My birthday’s coming up next month too…I’m SO torn about gifting one to myself.

Before you even said it, I thought “That’s one of the perks of living in Florida…. you can “weekend” in the Bahamas!” hahaha. I am glad you get to have travel time and work from home in July. You work hard and deserve the time. 🙂

I love rants! Bring on more rants! I was actually hoping your rant would be a little more juicy. However, I do love “K-BAR”! Heather from GGR nicknamed my blog MGR, but it hasn’t caught on yet!

I work from home during my part time piano lesson teaching job and it is wonderful. In the summer, if I have a lesson at 9am, my alarm is set for 8:45! Sure, I don’t look like a beauty queen, but that’s okay!

  10. Jenn @ Running on Lentils

I’ve never considered applying to be part of Fit Fluential because everything I see reviewed I’m not interested in. I’d rather buy stuff I love than get free things I don’t like. Ah…the Vivoactive! My FR 220 connects quickly to satellites, but I would love to know how many miles a day I walk since I walk a lot & don’t want an additional gadget. Maybe at some point I’ll get it. When I’m wearing a visor or hat, I don’t wear sunscreen on my forehead because my forehead is covered/shaded. But when I’m not wearing one, I put on Badger SPF stick sunscreen on my eyebrows. It diverts the sweat away from my eyes nicely!

I’ve never tried the Insta-Dry, but I love the color! Have you tried Sally Hansen’s Miracle Gel polish? It’s my current fave – however, for every person I’ve heard say they love it, I’ve heard someone else say they absolutely hate it, so for some reason it seems like it works for some people much better than others. I also second the comment asking to keep up the reviews – I personally am much more likely to try something when it’s not from someone trying to sell something! 😉

  12. Kristen @ Glitter and Dust

I use training peaks (when I am training) and my coach uploads all of my workouts in advance so I can prepare and see what is on my schedule for the week. I absolutely love it! I am also a fan of the pen and paper method of writing down my workouts and use the believe Training Journal – again, when I am training.

My favorite sunscreen right now is the Honest Company sunscreen, which my doctor recommended. I buy it at Costco which cuts the cost.

I’m still searching for a sunscreen that I love. I had been using Coppertone Sport lotion, it doesn’t run into my eyes, but this summer it has been making my skin break out (it didn’t last summer…so who knows). So I am on the hunt for something new. I picked up a Neutrogena one to try on Monday, but I haven’t tried it yet. I tried a sample of a Shiseido sunscreen from Sephora that seemed really good, but I am not sure I can justify that much money on sunscreen. I think I would go through a tiny bottle way too quickly.

You are right, I think you have to be careful of what products you review or promote on your blog. I’ve seen a few running blogs (a couple of very popular ones too) that seem to be more about promoting brands, than running. It’s important to keep the integrity of your blog, and keep it honest. I’ve turned down a few products, just because I found them either to be inferior quality or too expensive, or just not what I think running blog readers want to read about..

Thanks KBAR 🙂 Will Adam include that on a Chicago sign? Hehe. Thanks for sharing the products – I haven’t heard of Training Peaks before . I also use the Neutrogena SPF 70, but haven’t used the sport version. Will need to check it out.

Totally agree. I’m a fitfluential ambassador but not at the same time because I don’t use it at all and have done ZERO reviews from it because of things you mentioned. I’m NOT about ‘branding’ or ‘growing’ my blog. I like it just fine the way it is thank you very much. I have found some cool people from the hashtag though so there’s that.

The Insta-Dry is THE BEST. I’m the most impatient person in the world, so ANYTHING that cuts the annoying “I can’t do anything because my nails are drying” time down is a product worth buying, haha. Honestly, I’ve found that the best sunscreen for running are the cheap-o versions at Walmart and Costco — I go with their brand of spray suncreen in SPF 50+, and never burn and it NEVER runs or stings my eyes. Granted, it doesn’t smell especially pretty, but it gets the job done!
