Survey Results: Getting Back to My Roots

Hey there! Today I’m going to share the results of the blog survey I ran last week.

Thank you so much to everyone who took the time to fill out the survey. I really appreciate your feedback, and I was really moved to tears by some of the comments you shared ?.

It’s clear to me from the survey that you want me to get back to my roots and share more training updates.

It’s been difficult for me to do this lately since my training has been all over the place. I’ve come to realize what I need is to put a BIG race on the calendar to help me focus. So that’s what I did!

I registered for the runDisney Wine & Dine Half Marathon: Two Course Challenge this November. I’ll run a 10K on Saturday and a half marathon on Sunday. Training will begin on July 5th!

Until then I’ve decided to set my sights on the Heroes in Recovery 6K being held here in Fort Lauderdale on June 3rd. I’ve never run a 6K before so it will be an automatic PR, but more than that it will give me something to shape my training updates around.

I also see that many of you are interested in mental health updates and weight loss/nutrition updates. I’m still seeing my psychologist once a month, and I also am working with a registered dietitian.

I’m a pretty open book but those kind of posts are still often tough for me to write about. I want to write about them because I know it’s helpful for others so I will try to be more diligent about getting them out on a more frequent basis.

When it comes to what you don’t want to see, I hear you LOUD AND CLEAR: you are not interested in makeup!

I’ll be honest I’m pretty interested in makeup so you’re going to still see some mention of that from time to time. I’ll just try to include makeup stuff in posts where I also talk about training :).

When it comes to vlogs there were mixed results. Many of you said you prefer for me to not upload videos because you don’t have time to watch them, but those of you who do watch them love them and even left me suggestions for future videos.

I may start posting videos on Sundays instead of during the week, that way they don’t interfere with M-F content but are still available for those that like them.

Speaking of things people like, Adam has been really enjoying disc golf these last few months. He mostly plays with his dad on Saturday mornings but hasn’t been able to play in a couple of weeks. He’s been dying to get in some practice so I went out to the park with him just to toss the disc around.

(omg I have a tattoo now!)

I wasn’t expecting to be very good at it but after a few throws I was able to generally get the disc where I wanted it to be. I’m not sure this is the right sport for me but it was fun to do with Adam. Plus I just like going to the park, although it always makes me wish I had a dog.

After I blogged about having a tender spot on my foot Megan asked if I thought it was PF. It honestly hadn’t even crossed my mind and I don’t want to even consider that. I’m pretty sure it’s just that my shoes were really worn down.

Since I didn’t get any running done over the weekend I did a lot of reading about running. Marathon Woman started off a little slow for me as it talks about Kathrine Switzer’s early childhood.

The childhood stories are included to set the stage for things to come; they show you how Kathrine developed the character that allowed her to run Boston when women weren’t supposed to.

Since I already know that Kathrine is a badass woman I didn’t really need all the childhood fluff. The book really picked up for me when she got to college and decided she was going to train for and run Boston. That’s about where I am right now.

BTW here’s a pic of Cecil just because :).

This is his “okay, I’ll pose for the camera in exchange for two treats” look.

Have you ever played disc golf, or do you like playing frisbee?
Anyone else doing Wine & Dine this year?

Yay for a big race! Its always nice to have something to work towards to share. My training updates are so blah because there is no training happening!

Yeah, it’s so hard to be a running blogger when you have nothing to shape your updates around. It’s tough to make a bunch of easy runs and/or cross training sound interesting day after day. I think you do a good job of it though. I love reading about all of the XT stuff you do.

Interesting results! I think it makes sense that people don’t care to see makeup on a running blog BUT as someone who likes to play with makeup myself, I always like a coming across new random suggestions, and you don’t post about it so often that it’s distracting or anything. *shrug*

I totally get why writing about mental health and weight loss is still a struggle, even if you’re doing really well. I said I’d like to see more of it, but I only want you writing what you’re comfortable writing and sharing 🙂

My school usually has a big group of teachers who go to the Wine n Dine every year! I always said if I were to ever to a Disney race, that’s the one I’d choose.

I wonder if it was the male readers that indicated they don’t want more makeup posts. They aren’t vocal in the comments, but according to my analytics close to 30% of my readers are men!

Yeah, Adam and I have talked about going to Wine and Dine before, so this fits in nicely. While I think runDisney races are generally way overpriced I am interested in the challenge aspect. I think it will be interesting to run back to back races. I am on the fence about how I want to approach the weekend. I’m thinking about making the 10K my focus race and then enjoying the half marathon on Sunday, but we’ll see. I still have a lot of time to decide!

Congratulations on getting a big race on the calendar! Having something big looming has really helped me stay on track this spring. Especially since we have had a lot of cold, rainy days lately…but I’m guessing that isn’t a problem for you.

I’m always down to chat about makeup, so I won’t complain about those posts 🙂

I know you are! 🙂 I have to tell you the Tarte finishing powder is AMAZING. I never really understand what beauty gurus meant by “this powder is awesome because it’s finely milled” until I tried the Tarte product. Now I know and I’m obsessed! I think it would be impossible for this powder to cake up because it’s so fine!

      • May 10, 2017 / 9:11 am

You know, I used Tarte’s powder (the loose one) years ago and loved it. I’m glad to hear the pressed one is just as good, loose powders are kind of a pain sometimes.

My training updates have been nonexistent because my training has been nonexistent so I totally feel you there. Even if I am running it can be hard to write about it if it’s just boring pointless easy runs all the time.

Weren’t you planning to do RnR Las Vegas in November? Or am I remembering that wrong? Either way, yay for a big race! I’m SO excited that fall race training season is finally here!

Exactly! How do you make a post about yet another easy run sound like its worthwhile? I mean they are worthwhile runs but there’s no story there.

My November race was between Wine and Dine and RnR Vegas. I think I would have preferred RnR Vegas but I don’t think I’m down for that long of a flight to a race. It brought back memories of how uncomfortable I was flying home after Portland!

Wow Cecil just looks perfect in that picture! I like makeup stuff but only if it is on a vlog cause I like to hear you talk. 🙂 I watched your Ulta haul last night while cooking up mushrooms! The only reason I asked about PF is because whenever my feet hurt that’s the FIRST thing I think of, and if I reign it in quickly, it doesn’t last too long. Although it ends up sort of lasting awhile anyway because I am *so* careful when coming back to running. Like my PF may be rip roaring for 6 days, but then I spend 3 weeks running cautiously so it doesn’t come back! Wine and Dine sounds fun!!! I never did back to back races like that.

I don’t think I’ve ever had PF before. I don’t even want to think about having any injury at the moment but I am sure you are right that I SHOULD be thinking about it just in case. I’ll definitely be conscious of any issues tonight during my run. I did notice it was slightly bothersome this morning when I was walking barefoot up my wood stairs which probably isn’t a great sign… but now everything feels fine!

      • May 10, 2017 / 10:31 pm

Okay not to try to worry you but if it’s pf or the beginning of pf, stretching your foot before getting out of bed is super helpful.

I did the wine and dine last year and it was so fun! Big difference running at night versus during the day, and the after party was truly fun, make sure to get a ticket for your man so he can enjoy it with you!

I really wanted to run in the dark, but I think this year it’s actually taking place in the morning. Such a bummer since I’m a natural evening runner!

I’m excited for all of the non-running wine and dine activities :). I will be earning quite a few treats after doing the 10K and half! haha
