The Best Kind of Weekend

I had such a great weekend full of sunshine and laziness! 🙂 Before I jump into that though I need your help. If you could just take a second to answer this one question poll I would really appreciate it!

On Saturday morning I went for a little 8 mile run at the beach (<–the only non-lazy thing I did this weekend).

I’m trying to get into a morning running routine. I’ve tried several times before and it’s never worked out, but I’m giving it another shot. During the week I love being able to come directly home after work and eat dinner at a normal time – and that’s only possible if I don’t have to run after work.

It’s really hard for me to get out of bed in the morning, but I’m sure it’s hard for everyone to do. I just need to commit to it and somewhere down the road I hope it gets a little easier!

Saturday afternoon Adam and I made a trip down to the beach together to grab some frozen yogurt – mmmm! Our first froyo of the year!

The beach was completely packed mid afternoon, which is another reason for me to get into the morning running routine. During the spring and summer it’s so hard to find a parking spot and weaving around groups of people on the sidewalks is annoying.

When we got home we found Cecil all curled up in a blanket fort! He’s the cutest!

Sunday consisted of lunch with my mom, a short weight lifting session at the gym and then laying on the couch watching the Miami Heat!

All in all it felt like the best kind of boring weekend :).

Do you have to bribe yourself to get up early or are you a morning person?

    I have been a morning person for awhile now but I remember in my early 20s I definitely preferred to sleep in. Not sure when that changed, but I realized how great it was to work out in the morning. Its nice to get it done first thing plus i had more energy all day. Now I just get up at ridiculously early times for no reason. I’m sure if you get into the habit of getting up early to work out it won’t be so bad!

      I got up early a couple of days last week – so hard! I think consistency must be the key because rotating on-and-off early mornings was super hard. Initially my thinking was, “okay get up early today but treat yourself to sleeping in later tomorrow” but that was just torture! This week I’m going to aim for early every day!

    I run with a local coached running group (in Dallas) which makes it easier to get up in the morning. I run on Tuesday and Thursday at 5:15 am and on Sunday at 6 am. I wouldn’t get up that early if I didn’t have a group run. I often feel sleepy and do not want to get up, but am fine once I am out and running. The negative side though is I cannot stay awake much past 10 pm.

      I hear ya! On the mornings I do get up to run early I feel great and I love getting it done. I just need to figure out the logistics too – like when should I eat breakfast and what public bathrooms are open early in the morning! haha

        I am driven by my stomach. I get up a 4 am so I can have a nice hot oatmeal breakfast and do some foam rolling before running. I need to leave the house around 5 am to make it for the 5:15 am run. Happily it is through a local running store so I can use the bathroom in the store if need be. But since it is a 5 minute drive from my house that is not usually necessary 🙂

    I am not a morning person at all. It doesn’t matter what time I get up the first hour that I am awake I will be cranky. This could be at 5 am or at 10 am. I just want to be left alone when I am waking up. It has been nice being able to wake up and lay around in bed for an hour on the weekends this winter. No need to start running early to beat the heat if there is snow on the ground.

      Haha so true! Even down here we’ve gotten a couple of breaks where I’ve been able to run mid-day. That has been so nice! It makes me want to move to a cold weather state!

    I would say I’m more of a morning person, but I don’t always run in the AM. If I’m working a day shift, I could start at 6, 7, or 7:30am – and there will be no running happening if I have to be working at 6! I also am more likely to run in the morning if I know I have specific plans that evening. I know consistency is key for some people, but I’m probably 50/50 with AM/PM workouts depending on my schedule, and that works for me!

      That’s really interesting to hear about your 50/50 schedule! Last week I tried getting up early about every other day and it killed me. I figured “get up early today, treat yourself to sleeping in tomorrow” but I think my body would prefer waking up the same time every day. I’m going to give that a try this week and see how it goes. In grad school I used to get up at 4:30am everyday so I know I can do it … I just need to get back into the routine! Or maybe in my old age now it’s just not possible, haha!

    I noticed that its *easier* for me to wake up before 7AM (less groggy/cranky) if I go to sleep before midnight. If I wake up anytime after 7, I’ll roll around in bed until I know I’m going to be 10 minutes late from work (I live 5 minutes – walking- away). The gym/pool is less crowded, I won’t have time to make excuses in my head and I definitely have more energy for the day.

    When I first started to get up earlier than 7, I found that if I had money to lose (Groupon classes were about to expire), I would more likely get up early. Maybe you can make a bet with Adam?

      Ah yes, I definitely need to start going to bed earlier!

      Adam loves to sleep in even more than I do. There is no amount of money that would get him out of bed before the very last minute, haha!

    I really don’t want to be a morning person but I find myself not being able to sleep past 7am these days. If I do sleep in, I usually wake up several times before I just decide to get up. It is nice to get an early start on the day, though. Glad you were able to fit in a nice run this weekend!

      On the weekends when I don’t HAVE to get up early, I tend to find it hard to sleep in (not always, but many times). That’s the most annoying thing ever! I remember that happening to me as a kid too. I would wake up at like 6am on saturdays and watch Double Dare, haha!

    It looks like such a fun weekend. Honestly, I’m more of a morning person to begin with. I thrive on running early and finishing my runs much earlier. I love the accomplishment of just getting it over with.

    I am glad your weekend was everything you wanted it to be! 🙂 It looks so bright and sunny down there. You know me, I get my runs done in the morning because it just feels so good to be DONE. I love driving home from work knowing I can RELAX at night. Although piano lesson nights I can’t but that’s a whole other story.

    I think once you start getting up early, you will be more motivated to do it because you will have the entire evening to do as you please. Getting up very early is easier when you have time at night to just chillax. What time will you have to get up to do your run before work?

      I hope you’re right! I think you are!

      It depends on how many miles I need to run and if I need to do strength training too. I think I’ll need to get up between 5-6am each day! ZzzZzzzZzzzzzz! I don’t need to leave my house until 8:30am … but I move really slowly in the mornings! I need time to drink coffee, read the news/blogs and really ease into my day!

        I understand that. I used to set my alarm for 15 minutes before my workout! I know that is crazy!!! I basically got up, peed, got dressed, and hit the streets. Now I give myself 30 min. 45 would be way nicer buuuuut so is the extra 15 min of sleep. I get up at 5:45 most days, but today I had to run 8 mi so I had to get up at 5:15!!! Ugh!!!

    I wish I could be a morning runner, but I have trouble motivating myself that early. I manage it during the summer because it gets so hot here that it is unbelievably miserable to run any other time. I usually take too much time drinking coffee and then need to get up and go, leaving my run until the afternoon (or between stuff at work).

    Cecil is so adorable with his blanket fort. Elly and Sydney do the same thing.

    I have no leap year buddies as far as I know.
    The water looks so pretty and blue!
    Some folks are not morning people, it is not natural for me, mostly I adjusted because of our work hours…but there was a long time I ran after work. I am struggling again to get out of bed every day for work, so I wonder if I can readjust my habits when I can finally run again. I do get up easier on run days though! I know I get to do something for me so I feel more motivated 🙂 It is a good feeling to get work and have a run in, even my little 5K’s made me feel good.

    I go through phases where morning runs are easy to wake up for and other times where waking up early is just not happening. Hope you make it stick this time lol

    It took me a second to find Cecil in that picture.

    Your poll reminded me of how easy it USED to be to get out of bed. Now, with a 6-month old, I find myself trying to get as much sleep as possible (even if that means sleeping in). I am still a morning person though… all runs must happen in the morning!!!

    Could you image being born on a leap year? I wonder how you would celebrate???

    OMG Cecil in that blankies!!! Total heart-eyes right now haha.

    In the summer if I’m training for long distance, I start at 5-5:30. It’s just so dang hot! I like that it gets a teeny bit less humid just as the sun rises, so it’s like a little relief in the middle of the long run.
