The Cliff Notes Version of the BDR Cape Coral Half

It’s currently 7:20pm on Sunday night and I am exhausted.

My alarm went off at 3:30am so that I could get ready for Best Damn Race Cape Coral. Ali, Megan and I had plans to meet up at 5:25am near the start and I like to give myself two hours of prep on race mornings.

There are so many things I want to tell you about this weekend but my brain is total mush right now. I guess that’ll happen when you get up at 3:30am, run a half marathon and then drive clear across the state all in one day.

I’ll have a race report up tomorrow. The cliff notes version of this whole thing is that I missed my time goal for the day, but not by a lot.

On a course with more shade I think I would have easily made it. My legs felt good but I was mentally beat down by the sun. I guess that’s what I get for doing all of my recent long runs in the dark!

Photo thanks to Megan!

I’ll give you the full rundown tomorrow! 🙂

Happy Monday!

Congrats on coming close to your goal! I’m sure this weekend wasn’t ideal for racing in Florida- it was even really warm up here! Hope you guys had fun though:)

It definitely wasn’t an ideal for racing and I am SO IMPRESSED with all of the full marathoners. It was downright hot and steamy out. Those runners showed true guts and perseverance!

Congrats Kristina!!! I’ve heard that it has been unseasonably warm in FL this year, at least according to my sister in Gainesville. It has even been crazy warm up here in Michigan…mid 60s when we usually should be mid 30s. Crazy, right? Anyway, heat is always a wild card when running, if you came close to your goal while baking in the sun, that is pretty impressive! Can’t wait for the full report.

It has been unseasonably warm, hasn’t it? I was thinking this time last year we had dipped down into the 60s a few times, and this year we’ve only hit 68*F one night I think. I hope Jan/Feb are much better!

Mid 60s does seem really warm for Michigan at this time of year. I remember visiting my friend at MSU back in grad school around this time a few years ago and it was downright FREEZING … and snowing!

  3. Megan @ Meg Go Run

Well, you know I know it was hot! I actually got a little bit of color on me and I got that sore throat/fevery feeling you get when you are in the sun for too long. Can’t wait to read your report and hear about all the beautiful sights along the course.

It was blazing hot out! I could not be more impressed with all of the marathoners who had to deal with that heat all morning long. Truly incredible!

  5. Hanna @ TheMillennialNextDoor

Congrats on another half marathon and coming close to your time goal! Like others have said, if you can come close even in awful conditions then you are probably going to have a GREAT race in February! I definitely don’t envy all you southerners having to race in conditions like that though, ugh.

I really hope you’re right! It’s very possible that in February it’s going to be just as hot! Florida weather is just so unpredictable in the winter but my fingers are crossed!

  6. Lizzy

3:30am! That’s not a wake-up time, lol! I’m looking forward to hearing more about the race. I saw on Ali’s Insta that it was pretty hot and sunny out there yesterday. Big Congrats on running a strong race despite terrible conditions!

      Thanks Lizzy!

3:30am is ridiculous … every time my alarm goes off in the 3am hour I seriously wonder why I decided to become a runner 😉

  7. Jennifer

Congrats, Kristina! Love the picture Megan took of you. See you in a monthish!

  8. Ali @ Hit the Ground Running

I was trying to revaluate how I could have prepped better for this race, and sunny runs are the ONLY thing I think I could have added. I just didn’t think it would make that much of a difference, but it definitely did. I’m so glad we got to see each other and spend some time together!!
