The Problem with Running Skirts

I only own two running skirts and both of them are from Sparkle Athletic. One is red with white polka dots and the only time I wore it was during the Disney Princess Half Marathon in honor of Minnie Mouse :).

sdfsdf

The other is a teal one that I’ve worn to a couple of races, including the A1A Half Marathon last weekend.

I love these skirts. They’re cute, lightweight and never shift around while I’m running. Plus I can wear my trustworthy, never-ride-up compression shorts under them which I like.

HOWEVER, when browsing through race photos that include my skirts, I have noticed that I seem to be flying by the seat of my pants. Literally.

I thought about dropping $25 for this digital download because I think it expresses how happy I tend to be running along the beach. But my skirt is completely up… riding high in the wind without a care in the world!

Here it looks proper in the front, but I can tell I’m mooning everyone in the back!

I’m probably mooning everyone here too….

^ That face. I have to tell you a story.

I saw the race photographers as I was coming up A1A. During most races when I see aΒ photographer I smile and wave or give the thumbs up. This time I decided, “I’m going to pretend I don’t see them. Maybe I’ll get a picture that makes me look like a serious runner.” πŸ˜€

I thinkΒ HeatherΒ should write a guide on how to take awesome race photos!

Anyway, I need to find a more sturdy running skirt.

To the girl I talked to after the race who said she was behind me for 90% of the course: I’m sorry for flashing you all race long!

Do you have anyΒ embarrassingΒ race photos?
Do you smile for race photographers or just ignore them?

I have some awful awful race photos..but I try to embrace them! hahaha! Actually I try not to look at them more than once and then forget they ever happened! I usually try to give them a smile, or wave or something. Sometimes I don’t even know they are there. My favorite race photo of all time was from a photographer I didn’t see!
You are wearing shorts under your skirt so the mooning thing I wouldn’t find offensive as another runner on the course. We have all sorts of things happen while we are out there, not always things we can control.

Hahah most of the time I only look at them once and never look again too. I’ve made some truly ridiculous faces. Most of the time I look crazy because I’m singing along to my music so my mouth is wide open in the shot πŸ˜€

Glad I don’t have to worry about running skirts lol.

Don’t think I have any embarrassing race photos. I know there are plenty out there where I’m dying and my face shows the same. If I’m feeling good i try to smile and wave at the photographers.

You should talk to Ali about running skirts!

I love that you tried to look like a serious runner in your race photo. πŸ™‚ Yes, Heather takes the best race photos!

Question, if you have on shorts underneath, are you really mooning them???

Hahah I guess not really mooning them, but it feels funny since I have a skirt over the shorts. I’ve worn just the shorts in races before and that’s totally fine, but when the skirt flies up it feels like a totally different situation! I’m sure most other runners sympathize though!

I wouldn’t be bothered if you ran in just compression shorts, so the fact that your skirt is flying around in the wind probably wouldn’t have even registered on my radar if I were the person running behind you. I have seen much stranger things in races! At one half marathon I ran near a guy who had a t-shirt on but had pulled the shirt up so his entire chest was exposed and was running like that. I’m assuming it was a chafing issue, but seriously just ditch the shirt at that point. I have some photos with him in it that just crack me up. It was so weird.

I would buy the photo. I think you look amazing in it!

I think as long as you have shorts on underneath you’re not technically mooning anyone. I’m sure Ali will tell you all about it better than I can but I run in Skirt Sports skirts and I think they work really well. I have the lionness model and it’s actually a skort, the compression shorts are attached to it. The skirt part is also a little less flowy and frou-frou-y so it doesn’t flap around as much, if that makes sense. I’m kind of outgrowing my skirts, though. I still love them but I’m finding myself more interested in regular ol’ shorts again πŸ™‚

Thanks for the recommendation, I have been eyeing a couple of Skirt Sports skirts for a while. The site is down today for maintenance, but I just ordered through their Amazon shop. Can’t wait until it arrives!

I definitely go through phases too. Sometimes I only want to wear shorts, sometimes I only want to wear capris … I guess we have to change things up to keep it interesting πŸ™‚

We should all start wearing briefs like the elites. Why not!? We can all go get bikini waxes beforehand. IT WILL BE FUN!!!

I have two skirts from Lululemon, which work really well. However, at A1A, the seam rubbed on my leg a little funny and left a bruise. Normally that doesn’t happen, though. I do take some pretty terrible run photos. haha! When I am doing well, I’ll smile, but if I am suffering, I just go and ignore the photographer. I did that throughout A1A and my photos came out pretty bad.

I ran in a skirt once but was so self conscious about the “flashing” thing that I’ve never done it again. I’m pretty in love with my compression pants now though so I’m probably going to stick with those for the foreseeable future πŸ˜‰

I try and smile at the photographers if I see them πŸ™‚

I’ve found my sparkle type skirts definitely fly around and distract me! It looks funny in pictures but I just think of it as a cape for my butt haha!!

The Skirt a Sports skirts are definitely heavier and don’t fly around as much, but on windy days they do, and A1A was windy for sure! I think it makes us look faster πŸ˜‰

Hahaha that’s hilarious, I love it. I’ve been eyeing up Skirt Sports skirts for a while and finally took the plunge today. I ordered through Amazon so it should be here in just a couple of days, can’t wait!

  9. Annette @ Sweating Through Life

I’m really not a fan of running skirts. I don’t like to feel anything when running and I’m too afraid I would get annoyed at their floppiness. If that makes sense. I really prefer everything tight. But, I do think they are really cute:)
I’ve also done the “ignore the photographer and see what happens pictures.” They have never worked out in my favor…

I have never worn a running skirt so I never really thought about this! I wonder if some of them are longer/stay down better? I still think your pictures came out great!

I have half a dozen Capri skirts from Running Skirts that I adore. I am uncomfortable with just tights and can’t do shorts (loose skin from weight loss is terrible) and these were perfect. The skirts are attached to the capris and are pretty fitted, made of the same Lycra material. Surprisingly they don’t ride up. Running Skirts has skirts attached to ticgts, capris, and shorts, they have straight up skirts in a few lengths, and lots of other things too. Love the Capri skirts. They run some good deals sometimes, that is how I got started!

  12. Kristen @ Glitter and Dust

I have never worn a running skirt. Are they comfortable? At least you had shorts on underneath… so technically you weren’t mooning anyone… right? πŸ™‚ Whenever I notice a photographer I try to smile or at least look happy. The worst is when they capture you at mile 20-22. Seriously, does anyone smile during those miles? Half of the time I don’t even notice the photographers because I’m in my own little running world. Haha!

I love the skirts from runningskirts.com! I’ve never seen them fly up at all, they’re such great quality and they have vanity sizing which helps!

have no fear, the skirt is moving because you were cruising! Since you wear shorts underneath, I wouldn’t think twice about it. also, your race photos look great. If you want to see really bad ones – i had a race where i looked like i had lactated. ( i hadn’t) I also had no idea until I was done. They are so awful that I send the link to everyone. So enjoy: http://www.backprint.com/pathendrickphoto/121426/307
