The Soundtrack of My Life (2014 Running Edition)

HAPPY FRIDAY! I don’t know about you, but I feel like it’s been a really long week and I am looking forward to relaxing a bit this weekend!

I’ve got 11 miles on the sched. for my long run and the weather is supposed to be pretty amazing (lows in the 60s, highs in the 70s)! SCORE!

You probably don’t know this, but for the last couple of years I’ve had a premium Spotify account. When I first started running I never listened to music, but now I listen to it 90% of the time.

Just recently Spotify gave me a 2014 Year in Review of my musical listening habits:

I’m not surprised to see that I listen to music most on Saturdays since I (used to) do my long runs on Saturdays.

(I just recently switched my long runs to Sundays because I really wanted to sleep in on Saturdays during the holidays 🙂 .)

This seasonal chart made me laugh because it’s so spot on and totally syncs up with my training schedules!

During the very early parts of this year when I was training for the Princess Half Marathon and the Fort Lauderdale 5K I was always listening to Roar and California Gurls by Katy Perry.

Then during the Spring when I wasn’t really training for anything I just listened to a lot of JT <3.

This summer when I was training for my marathon I listened to “Started from the Bottom” by Drake a little too much, and most recently the Blackout and Femme Fatale albums by Britney have been the soundtracks to my Miami Half training!

You could say I like running to pop music.

I keep hearing about this Serial podcast EVERYWHERE though, so I might need to start listening to that on runs!

What are you listening to these days during your runs (if anything)?

When you’re training for a specific race do you listen to specific songs? I listened to “Started From the Bottom” during marathon training sooooo much I’ll always think of Portland when I hear it!

Thats pretty cool that spotify sent you that! Ive actually never tried spotify. I don’t run with music, but Ive thought about trying it out for other times when I don’t feel like listening to the same old playlist on iTunes!

    • December 12, 2014 / 11:05 am

You can sign up for a free account! I think they have three different tiers: free, paid ($5/mo) and premium ($10/mo). With premium you can download songs to your device so you can listen without a connection. I have to pay for the premium because I get no signal inside my gym! It’s awesome though because they have basically everything! Well, except Taylor Swift since she recently took all of her albums off.

I recently caved and got the Spotify Premium as well because I have serious Music ADD. I change my playlist about twice a week. Loving me some Ghost by Ella Henderson and some throw back Nelly.

    • December 12, 2014 / 11:06 am

Hahhaa about a month ago I went through a throwback Nelly phase! I was surprised at some of the uncensored lyrics … I guess back in the day I was only listening to the radio edits!! haha

  3. December 12, 2014 / 6:11 am

Fun statistics!! I am a total pop lover! Luckily for me I can listen to the same songs over and over again. I listened to the first Serial podcast and enjoyed it. I haven’t been able to listen to the rest, but plan on doing so.

    • December 12, 2014 / 11:07 am

Sometimes I listen to the same one song over and over and over again!

I went through this really bizarre phase where I’ll Make a Man Out of You from the Mulan soundtrack really motivated me and I listened to it on repeat for an entire 5K race LOL!

  4. December 12, 2014 / 7:22 am

Music during running…WHAT??? No music during running for me, need to be aware if your surroundings it on the trails :). But while commuting I listen to sports radio, some R&B, country, and rock. So pretty much everything lol.

    • December 12, 2014 / 11:09 am

Oh, that makes sense! I would want to know if a mountain lion was sneaking up behind me ready to attack!

In the car I always listen to sports radio. I feel like some of the hosts are my friends since I spend two hours a day five days a week with them during my commute to and from work LOL!

  5. December 12, 2014 / 8:04 am

I can’t run w/o music, I can for a short bit, but I would die on along run! I can’t do the podcast thing, talking just isn’t for me I guess. I like a beat, helps me to zone a bit I guess 🙂

    • December 12, 2014 / 11:13 am

I prefer listening to music most of the time, too. I’ve never really tried listening to a podcast before. I’ve listened to sports talk radio on the run before and that worked well for me.

The other night during speedwork my phone ran out of battery when I was only 1/2 done and I thought I was going to cry!

  6. December 12, 2014 / 8:30 am

I have heard about serial as well and currently have it on my mp3 player! I am a little confused though. I have 10 episodes and it seems like they are all connected and it is about a murder. So like, it takes you through everything and by the end of the 10th ep the murder is solved. But is there only ONE 10 episode set, or are there others???

    • December 12, 2014 / 10:19 am

There is one 10-episode set about this particular story. There will be a new season of Serial after this, but it will focus on a new story. 🙂

    • December 12, 2014 / 11:15 am

I think each 10 episode set is like one “season” and then next season they will restart with a totally new story. This season it’s a murder mystery, but I think next season it might be something completely different. I think the basic premise is that it’s always based on a real life story (as it unfolds).

      • December 13, 2014 / 7:04 am

Thank you both! I LOVE murder mysteries. If Forensic Files had a podcast, you know I’d be all about it. I was just wondering if everyone was talking about the same story. Glad yas cleared that up for me! 🙂

  8. December 12, 2014 / 10:17 am

I have to agree with Lauren above: you must listen to Serial. I’m hooked. I didn’t know next week is the last episode though….shoot! Not prepared! LOL

That’s pretty cool that Spotify sent that to you. It’s amazing how much we can do with data these days.

I mostly listen to classic rock/80s rock and 80s pop. That’s my favorite kind of music! #SorryImNotSorry #DontJudge I do like to listen to Aloe Blacc’s “The Man” when I want to get really pumped up. Because I am the (wo)man!! hehe

    • December 12, 2014 / 5:41 pm

      Um, I LOVE that song!

  9. December 12, 2014 / 10:37 am

I’ve never used Spotify before. Am I missing out on something? I primarily make a playlist on iTunes and carry my iPod during all of my workouts. Lately, I feel like I have been listening to a lot of Lorde, deadmau5, and David Guetta. I love how Spotify personalized your year in music!

  10. December 12, 2014 / 10:49 am

That’s really interesting! I very rarely use Spotify at the gym, and usually I just use it at work. I love me some Drake though 😀

  11. December 12, 2014 / 1:26 pm

I’ve never tried Spotify before either. But besides country music I really like to listen to Podcasts. !! It’s so motivating.

    Yay portland.!! Lol

  12. December 12, 2014 / 5:42 pm

    That’s so interesting and cool!!

I don’t listen to music when I run. I do like it when races play music leading up to the start of the race though. I’ll always remember hearing “The Man” as I crossed the start line of my first marathon 🙂

  13. December 13, 2014 / 3:30 pm

I like these stats. It’s cool that Spotify does that. For most runs I just listen to Songza or my running playslist/podcasts, but for races I’m picky about updating my lists and making sure they’re current. I’ve got a lot of modern alt on mine because even if the song is slow, I’m happier listening to music I love than upbeat music I don’t really care for lol.

  14. December 13, 2014 / 10:22 pm

I’ve never used Spotify – my boys hate some of my music choices which makes me laugh!!! (means I’m succeeding at my mom job) I don’t know why they hate when I play PitBull. I think they are the ones with funny music choices.

  15. December 14, 2014 / 2:14 pm

I don’t listen to music when I run anymore. I stopped at some point during marathon training and just never started back up. I listen to a lot of music when I’m traveling and doing housework, etc. I haven’t tried Spotify but I keep hearing good things about it, and I really like that they send you that data.

  16. December 14, 2014 / 10:40 pm

Let me know what you think about the TAL serial podcast when you start it. I’ve been hearing a ton about it, but haven’t made the commitment to start them yet. I hear it’s pretty addictive.
