The Unofficial Start of Winter

Thank you for your supportive comments and emails after yesterday’s post went up. I want to reply to each and every one of you today, and I apologize that I ran out of time yesterday to do so.

Last night I dropped my three month old iPhone and the screen shattered to pieces. I feel like my best friend is broken. Isn’t it sad how dependent on these little devices we can become? I mean, I can’t even Instagram right now! Is this real life?!

Luckily I dropped my phone AFTER I went for my run so I was still able to take pictures :).

Yesterday marked the first time that it was totally dark by the time I got to the beach after work. To me this signifies the start of winter, even if it was still 80 degrees out.

Early night fall coupled with some light rain meant I had the whole beach to myself! The drizzle felt nice, but the humidity was terrible. My Garmin recorded the weather as 79*F with 94% humidity! Ugh.

I was supposed to run/walk three miles last night but I ended up only completing two. I saw some lightning zip across the sky and decided to just go home and watch the Miami Heat season opener from the safety of my living room.

Mile 1: 13:26
Mile 2: 13:54 (<– tired, hungry, humid)
2 miles / 13:41 pace / 79*F with 94% humidity

I don’t think I mentioned it earlier this week, but I did go for another ART session with my physical therapist. I have felt a lot better the last couple of days. I still make it a point to get up and walk around my office frequently, but I can sit for a prolonged period of time without feeling any pain in my lower back and glutes. I consider that a success!

I also haven’t had my foot go numb during a run in in a while now, although I have experienced some minor tingling here and there in my left foot while running.

I took a whole week off after Chicago and all of my run/walks since I started back have been short and easy. I think the real test will be seeing how I feel during and after I run/walk 8 miles this coming weekend. If everything goes well I may start eliminating the walking breaks next week… we’ll see!

Enjoy the rest of your day … and please cross your fingers that I’m able to get my phone repaired quickly today! 🙂

What is the longest you’ve gone without using your phone in recent years? Whenever Adam and I go on a cruise we both turn our phones off, The longest was two years ago when we went on a seven night cruise. The number of emails I had when I turned that thing on was overwhelming… luckily they were almost all promo emails so I could just delete them!

So glad your PT is helping you! This is bad but I can’t remember the last time I went an extended time without my phone. I leave it in my locker when I’m at the gym… Does that count?

That definitely counts! I bring my phone all around the gym with me!

    Ugh that humidity sounds awful.

I hope you are able to get your phone fixed quickly. The longest I’ve gone without mine was my honeymoon. I kept it off for probably 90% of the two week trip. I think I turned it on to call my dad on his birthday and to check on my kitties and that was pretty much it.

Two weeks is a long time!!

I went after work last night and got it fixed 😀 Phew! I feel so much better now!

When we go on vacation I try and turn off the phone. It is sad how dependent we are on them! I am glad that your body is healing!! I don’t think I could handle the year round heat and humidity there!
Hey, the game is on tonight!

      That game …. UGH.

I didn’t really think we would win (though i hoped), but I did think we would keep it competitive! That was just embarrassing!

I hope your 8 miles goes well this week! It certainly seems like you are on the mend!

I rarely turn my phone off because I am Paul’s emergency contact if he feels a seizure coming on. BUT seeing as how I have a flip phone with no data plan, I primarily just use my phone to check the time and text. And the only person who really texts me is Paul!

It is so crazy to me that you have no data plan! While I was without my phone for less than 24 hours I realized how dependent I am on it. As I was driving to the place to get my phone fixed I went to check Google Maps on my phone for directions and realized I was on my own! Luckily I didn’t get lost since the place was only a mile from my house 😀

94% humidity! Yikes! Here’s hoping that from now on if you have to run in the dark at least you’ll get some better weather to go with it.

Wes and I go backpacking in the Sierras at least once a year and we leave our phones either in the car or completely off, or sometimes we’ll leave one on airplane mode if we want to use the camera. There’s absolutely zero reception out there, so there’s no reason to have one on for safety. We’ve made a little ritual of stopping once we are back to civilization and getting a drink while we sit and deal with emails. After one trip this summer we spent over 2 hours dealing with emails! Out of control.

      Two hours! Wow!

When we get back from a cruise and I see all of the emails I delete, delete, delete as fast as possible, especially from my personal inbox. I’m a tiny bit more careful with my work inbox 😉

We turn off our phones on cruises, too. Otherwise, I’m attached. It’s pretty sad.

I’m starting to notice cooler weather here. Definitely fall…funny how 85 degrees feels almost cool once the humidity lets up a bit!

They are so helpful though! Last night when I was on my way to the place to get my phone fixed I realized that I would normally check directions on Google Maps and that if I got in a car accident or had some issue I could just call for help. Without a cell phone I was directionless and nervous!
