Treadmill. Speedwork. “Fun.”

The high yesterday was a very hot and sunny 84 degrees!

I’m definitely not telling you this to brag. I am telling you this because 84* is TOO HOT for running and I need to complain to someone who will understand!

I was able to head out a little earlier than I normally do, and I just wasn’t interested in running in 78* + 75% humidity so I headed to the gym to use a treadmill.

I know lots of runners like doing speedwork on the treadmill because you can control the pace. I really don’t like it because my treadmill shakes when I run at anything faster than 10 min pace and I get scared!

I had a fartlek on the plan and my coach wanted me to do the fast portions at 9:45 – 10:30 pace. I can hit 9:45 pace when I’m running outdoors, but on the treadmill I have to stick closer to 10 min pace to feel safe.

Splits – 13:51, 12:21, 12:26, 13:48.


It wasn’t that long ago that my fartlek miles were in the upper 11-min range and I want to get back to that asap! I’ll take those 12:20 paces since I’m coming off of a two week break, but it’s time to get down to business!

I most definitely need to get over this 10-min-pace-treadmill phobia because I am sure I will be spending a lot more time on the treadmill as we get closer to the summer.

After doing my thing on the ‘mill I did a short-ish strength workout – chest, shoulders, back.


And then I showered and curled up with a glass of hot tea and my favorite cat.


Oh yeah, Adam was there too :). We watched the Heat game and relaxed.

I have no idea why but Thursdays are one of my favorite days of the week, so Wednesday nights are pretty good because I know Thursday is right around the corner!

I think I like Thursdays because I enjoy the anticipation of the weekend. Once the weekend actually gets here I just start counting down the hours until work starts again.

… Wow that sounds so depressing! haha

Do you do that too? On Saturdays I’m always like, “this time tomorrow we’ll be so close to the end of the weekend!” I need to just enjoy the day and not worry about counting down the hours until Monday!

    God, that’s waaay too warm :0 that’s more like summer than early spring, ugh. Wish I could send some colder clouds your way to even it out :3
    Why does the treadmill shake? That must feel so annoying. There’s two treadmills at my gym that does the same thing, it’s the two most popular and used treadmills, so I’ve come to the conclusion it’s because they’ve been run out. And the one I have in my room does kind of the same thing, but that’s more likely because it’s not the most expencive ‘mill out there haha 🙂
    Still, it’s better to be on a treadmill than melting away in heat or freezing your toes off in the cold 🙂
    You’re so good at doing your strenght workouts, I could learn a thing or two from you haha 🙂 I keep telling myself to start doing it, but I always chicken out xD

    I always enjoy the anticipation of the weekend too because I know how fast they go by! Its so crazy that its 85 degrees there and tonight it will be 9 here and we are getting 7 inches of snow today.

    Awe man! Florida goes from wonderful to crazy hot way too fast! When I’m down there, I always run after sunset, but even that isn’t enough. Good luck with that speed work! I hope it cools off again for ya before the summer really sets in.

    My weird phobia is turning my ankle. Any time the weather is bad, I’m always so convinced that I am going to step weird and turn it. That probably doesn’t sound all that weird, but I have never turned my ankle while running on roads (I’ve done it doing other things, for sure). It’s annoying how old injuries haunt us.

    That’s messed up the TM shakes 🙁 I haven’t experienced that, I am sure it would make me crazy.
    Just work on gradually edging that pace up, I was getting faster and faster, way faster than I could ever run outside before I got hurt. I would just focus on 30 second bursts and it was helping me.
    Weekends just aren’t long enough, I am always grumpy on Sunday nights lol

      It’s not cool! I know the treadmills in our gym are all on even ground so there isn’t a safety issue really… but it feels like a safety issue when I’m watching it shake shake shake!

    I’ve never experienced the treadmill shakes, but I don’t think I run on the treadmill enough to notice it. Or maybe it does shake and that’s part of why I hate it so much, who knows. It sounds super annoying.

      The worst is if I focus on the little TV screen because I just see it bouncing all over the place. It’s worse than trying to run when you’re on a cruise ship, which is saying something since treadmill running on the ship totally throws me off!

    I am with ya- not a fan of speed work on the treadmill! But thank goodness we have the option for when there in “inclement” weather! We have a snow day today! There is already 3 inches outside from overnight and it is supposed to snow until 4pm. CRAZY!

      But yesterday I was able to run in only one pair of pants, so it did warm up here for a hot minute. 🙂

        Only one pair of pants!! HAH! I have never run in a pair of pants ever, in my entire life!

        It looks like your snow day was really nice! Our equivalent is a hurricane day, which isn’t so nice because it comes with all sorts of complications — worrying about power going out, needing to get gas, having to eat ALL THE FOOD in case power does go out, etc.

        Adam always has like 3 gallons of milk in the fridge because he makes a big protein shake every night and one time he was like, “okay we can’t let this milk go to waste, we need to start drinking NOW!” So much milk….. oy.

    The cat treadmills cartoon s hilarious! That is crazy that the treadmill shakes when you go fast! I’d be scared too. Also snowing here today. We got 4 inches already & schools are closed. Maybe spring will come….?

    Hmmm…perhaps if we averaged out our temperatures, we would have great running weather. Truth be told, I will take extreme cold over extreme heat. Any day. Humidity kills me. It is interesting that your outdoor running weather is winding down, and ours is (supposedly) cranking up!
    I was never able to run on a treadmill without holding on until maybe 5 years ago. I just cranked up the TV louder than the noise of the treadmill and that really helped. I also found that I cannot run with good form too slowly on the treadmill (I am sure that holds for outside too, but I don’t have to worry about falling off the road!). I would just work on bumping that speed up one increment at a time–You CAN do it! 🙂
    Now my phobia is narrow, roads due to snow piles…
    I almost forgot, I have a fear of getting lost on long runs, I always tell Dave where I am going and when I should be back, and at what time he should come looking for me if I haven’t returned!

      I’m all for running in the averaged out weather! I think maybe we all just need to move to California 😉

      I was thinking about the outdoor running seasons too. Your January/February is my July/August!

      I think my form breaks down if I try to go too slow on the treadmill too. Or at least I seem to run into the front of the treadmill a lot!

    Oh my goodness, look at your warm weather. I bet that would feel super hot to me because it is supposed to be 60 today here and that to me is warm. ☺

    I know the “cat treadmill” all too well. We have to close our bathroom doors or else….

    I don’t have any fears when running on the treadmill, but sometimes when I am trail running I get these thoughts that a cougar is going to jump out and attack me. It causes me to get paranoid and stop my music so I can hear my surroundings.

    The treadmill can totally get ahead of you sometimes, I do have similar fears. I’m dyyyying for hot temperatures, this cold business is getting old.

      I was watching a video of Sage Canaday where he said he has flown off the back of the treadmill before! If it can happen to an elite professional runner like Sage, I don’t even want to think about what could happen to me! haha

    Fridays are my favorite day for much of the same reason… almost the weekend! But then when Saturday rolls around, I start thinking about how it’s almost Sunday, and then it will be Monday. Depressing.

    I’m the same way about the weekends! Though, this week we’re heading to CA for an apartment hunting trip that will go into mid-week next week, so I’m actually pumped for Sunday (a rarity!).

    Hahaha, cat treadmills! Cecil looks very regal in that photo.

    I’m not a big fan of speedwork on the treadmill either, and that’s where I’ve done the bulk of it. I always feel like I might fly off the back, even if it’s a pace that wouldn’t be so daunting outside!

    I owe you and email with cat pics and stories. I haven’t forgotten, I swear!

    There was a treadmill at my old gym that would shake when I tried to run fast and I avoided that thing like the plague. No way, man!

    Don’t sweat it that you weren’t able to get your desired speed paces. Sometimes, your body just ain’t havin’ it, and in that case it’s better to just go with the flow and take it down a notch than give up or push yourself too hard. When that happens to me, I just switch to an easy run, and try again the next day.

    I used to get nervous on the treadmill – part of why I went with a nice commercial grade treadmill was so that it would be sturdy and not shake no matter how fast I run – it helps a lot with the mental thing!!!

    I’ve been noticing that the sun is going down later, so even though I start my runs around 6:30, it’s still hot. I usually start going in the morning or super late, like 8pm, once summer hits. I’m not looking forward to becoming a morning runner again.

      Hey Nikki, really unfortunately we do not still have Duke. With some positive reinforcement/food motivation he was learning to get along with Cecil pretty well, but we experienced another unforeseen issue with him. The rescue we adopted him from had another family that wanted to adopt him asap so he is now living happily in their home. They send us picture updates sometimes and he looks like he fits in perfectly! I had written a post about giving up Duke but I took it down after a week because seeing his picture at that time made me really upset.

    Haha, it’s funny because I know I’m complaining about the snow now, but in a couple of months I will be DESPERATE for the colder temps. I’d still rather run in a snowstorm than a sunny 85-degree day, no question about it! I always feel a little unsteady going faster on a treadmill, too…you’re definitely not alone!

    Thursdays are my favorite day of the week too! Friday is a rest day and Saturday is my long run day. Thursdays (after my a.m. run) is the day i get to stay up as late as I want and eat whatever I want without worrying about my next run.

    Driving to work today, the sun was beautiful, the skies blue and clear. I actually consciously patted myself on the back & congratulated myself because I choose to live in So Cal. My apologies to everybody living through the snowpocalypse. 😛

    I feel like I will fly off the treadmill when I do speed work…like my legs will just not go as fast and they need too. Then there I am star of the next viral dumb ass video flying off the back of a treadmill! lol!

    My issue with the treadmill is at any speed. I get dizzy running on it so I try to avoid it at all costs. I don’t know what I’m going to do once the real summer temperatures hit!

    That cartoon was hilarious! I like Thursdays as well…but then Friday seems to drag. Unfortunately no snow days for me… had to walk through the snow. Luckily this weekend has been gorgeous!
