Trip Down Memory Lane: The Last 10 Years!

As my 10 year high school reunion inches ever closer I’ve been feeling a bit nostalgic.  I don’t miss high school and I’m not planning to go to my reunion, but senior year was a nice jumping off point into the rest of my life …

My Freshman Dorm Room Closet at UCF, 2004:

I can hardly believe I lived with that as a closet for a full school year!

I’m glad to see that I had pictures of my family and my cat, Leo, up in the room. It’s funny to see that I gave prominent shelf space to those Tiffany and Coach bags though.  The things 18 year old me thought were important … hah!

Hanging with a “Celeb” – Frank R. From the Real World Las Vegas:

My freshman year I met Frank Roessler from The Real World Las Vegas. Do you remember when The Real World and Road Rules were cool shows to watch on MTV?!

(Good grief, I can’t believe I used to let my roommate dye my hair with box dye from Walgreens! Edited to add: I don’t think there is anything wrong with using box dye from Walgreens but … clearly we didn’t know what we were doing!!!)

Seems like Frank is doing pretty good for himself these days. He’s come a long way from The Real World!

Kristina The Intern:

During my junior and senior years of college I interned at Citrix Systems on the User Experience team as a tech writer. I’m in the black shirt and cream colored scarf to the far right.

I had a blast on that team and learned so much! Plus, they paid me an entry-level salary even though I was just an intern and they never made me fetch coffee! It was the perfect way to ease into professional life.

Moving Into the Working World

My first business card!

Two days after I graduated with my bachelor’s I started my first job at a Fortune 100 company. I thought I had it MADE! I ended up staying for less than a year though because I learned that big companies just aren’t for me.

I ended up taking a job as the PR Manager for ion interactive, an Inc 500 tech company, and loved every minute. I learned so much there and caught the entrepreneurial bug. I left ion after two years to start a company of my own. That’s a great story for a different day.

One day in 2012 I woke up and decided, “today I’m going to go for a run.” And I’ve gone running almost every day since then because it never fails to make me feel good!

By My Side for the Last Decade

You’ll never guess who left my that envelope just about a year ago! Just kidding, of course it was Adam, the LOVE of my life.

We met my freshman year/his sophomore year at UCF and he’s been at my side for the last 10 years (almost). He doesn’t like to be on the blog too much, but I promise the pictures of us as little 18 year olds are adorable : )

A lot of good and not so great has happened in between these important milestones over the last 10 years, but it’s been my journey and I wouldn’t change it.

Tell me one (or more) awesome thing(s) that happened to you over the last 10 years!

Have you ever lived in a dorm room? Did you like it?

– I actually didn’t mind it much, but I was glad to move into an apartment my sophomore year where I had my own bedroom and bathroom <—- very important to 19 year old me!

Gah! I want to see 18 year old pictures of you two! And did you manage to stat together even after you transferred out of UCF? Did he stay there? That’s impressive!

    1. Kristina @ Blog About Running

We did stay together! Adam actually transferred first … he came down to FAU after his sophomore year. He’s from down here. I ended up staying in Orlando for another year but we saw each other almost every weekend (we both put lots of miles on our cars!). After my sophomore year when I was a billion percent sure that Adam was The One I transferred down to south Florida too 😉 The rest is history!

Great trip down memory lane. Always more enjoyable to come back each day when you give us info about yourself and how you’ve come to this point in your life. I understand Adam not wanting to be pictured, I don’t like posting pictures of myself, must be a guy thing lol.

Best thing over the last ten years is meeting my fiance, getting a step son, and having two kids together.

Yes I lived in a dorm room, loved it. But also loved an apartment sophomore year lol.

Haha it probably is a guy thing!

That’s so awesome that you’ve built up an amazing family over the past 10 years! Plus, the Mrs. must be an amazing woman to have gotten you so into running 😉

Ah, dorm room life! It was fun, but it was even better when it was over! haha

I’m playing with the idea of going blonde-ish this summer…I wonder if boxed dye would have any effect on my hair though. I always assumed it wouldn’t take because my hair is so dark!

Ah, college dorms…built-in roommate and tiny closets. How DO we survive?!

Hmmm well I seem to remember needing to use two boxes on my hair to get it to lighten up. I’m sure I did a lot of damage to my hair during those experimental years! haha

Re-reading what I wrote I sound like a snob! The box dye actually wasn’t terrible at all. I mean, okay, my hair looks awful in that picture, but my roomie never turned it green 😀

This is so fun! My freshmen year I lived in a dorm room that looks similar to yours. I have noo idea how I fit all of my stuff in there! Your running story sounds almost exactly like mine. I was just laying in bed one day and was like you know what Courtney? You should go running. And so I did and I haven’t stopped since!

Great post, thanks for taking us on your trip down memory lane! Awww, I would love to see the pics of you guys as a teenage couple, I bet they are adorable. 🙂
I would love to hear about the company you started too. 🙂

I have never shared a dorm room to live in, but shared many a dorm room during backpacking around South America many moons ago.

Wow, awesome things that have happened in the last ten years?? I will go with: running races/in events and actually getting a decent position/beating my old times; meeting my husband/getting married; moving to Oz and meeting my best friend Annie; studying for and getting my nutrition degree (haha and then never using it pretty much); oh discovering teaching was a pretty awesome move!

You and Adam are such a beautiful inspirational couple too. 10 years is a long time, that’s awesome Kristina!!

I also love how you just decided ‘today I’m going to go for a run’ and haven’t stopped since then. 🙂

    1. Kristina @ Blog About Running

I will have to share the story about the company someday. It’ll be a long post because it took up a few years of my life but I learned so much during that time!

Ahh backpacking around South America sounds amazing. You have really done so many incredible things in your life so far! I am sure you’ll use that nutrition degree at some point, but really the memories you are making now and just so cool!

Adam and my 10 year anniversary will be this November <3 What would I do without him?! I'm sure you know the feeling. I can tell that you and your hubby are so close, too.

What a great post 🙂 I love the dyed hair, you look great either way! That’s so cute Adam left you a note. I chuckled you are just hitting a 10 year reunion, my 30 year is fast approaching, just scary lol That’s awesome you got a great job right out of college!

Adam and I were both SO lucky to get really good jobs right out of college. A lot of our friends really struggled. We worked hard in school to make the right connections, but we know there was also a lot of luck involved.

Thank you 🙂 I remember letting my friend dye my hair for the first time… now *that* was scary, haha.

  7. Megan @ Meg Go Run

Girl, I would do anything to see you and Adam as an 18 year old couple!!!!!!! 🙂 And I love your throwback posts. Not just the pictures, but you’re good at telling the stories. I used to love Real World and Road Rules. I watched Real World Seattle and Road Rules Australia religiously. Two guys from the Real World came to my college- Nathan and David I think. It was sooooo cool (at the time!!!). I didn’t have many friends in college. I was a huge loner. Within the past 10 years I graduated from college, got my first full time job teaching, and met/married the love of my life!
