Ways I Am Taking My Cross Training to a New Level!

Hola! Bonjour! I hope your Tuesday is off to a good start! I’ve got the sniffles thanks to a few sick colleagues, but I’ve got my fingers crossed that it doesn’t get any worse than this!

I can’t get sick because this month I’ve made a commitment to roaming outside of my comfort zone when it comes to cross training and I have to stick to the plan!

Up until this point my workout routines have pretty much consisted of the same three things: running, weightlifting and light cardio.

Just last month I started venturing into strength training with lower weight, higher reps, and this month I signed up for Brooke’s Holiday Burn. The burn is super cool because Brooke sends everyone signed up a weekly email with a bunch of full body workouts to try!

One of those workout routines last week included wall sits, so I decided to give ’em a go. They looked easy enough and according to Brooke’s plan I only needed to do 4 wall sit reps at 30 seconds a piece. Doesn’t sound too hard, right?

I decided to add in bicep curls while doing the wall sits to help the time pass by a little faster.

All of that went great, I loved the wall sits and definitely felt the burn by the third and last rep. And then I really felt the burn the next day! And the day after! And even still today I am feeling the burn! haha

In addition to Brooke’s full body workout ideas, I’ve also gone through Meg’s latest video routine:

Pretty sure I was sweating and huffing after the first minute!

I challenge you to try this routine and see how many times you can do it!! Meg suggests doing the routine four times in a row (I only did it once!!).

I’ve also decided to start trying out some of the Blogilates videos! There are like a million of them, so I’m using Cassey’s 4-week beginner schedule to start navigating my way through.

Screen Shot 2014-12-08 at 9.19.28 PM

Each day you just look at the schedule and do the recommended video(s).

At first I was like this girl is wayyyy too cheerful, I can’t take it but she’s kind of grown on me!

I’m finding that venturing out of my cross training comfort zone and trying new things is a lot of fun! Of course I’m still focused on making gains in regular ol’ strength training, but being able to vary up my routine is making life a lot more interesting!

I’m even getting up EARLIER than usual to fit in this extra workout time. I used to sleep in until after my snooze alarm went off 10 times, and now I only wait 5 times :). Kidding! (kind of).

There’s no reason to wait until January 1st to start making changes to our routines, right?

Anyone else trying to take their cross training to a new level in 2015?

Have you ever done any Blogilates videos? Thoughts?

Any other video series or online XT recommendations I should try?

This all sounds so great! You know all about my experience with adding new cross training lately:) But its so important to keep changing things up and challenging our bodies in new days. And like you said, no reason to wait until 2015 to start making changes!

I love the way you put that… keep challenging our bodies in new ways! We gotta do it to keep things interesting and keep on improving!

We once had a wall sit contest at work. The loser had to buy everyone lunch! I am too competitive and went until my legs collapsed! Needless to say I did not lose!! But I HURT!!!! Those things are vicious!!
I will have to give some of these methods of cross training a try…to be frank I am just really lazy. I don’t want to cross train due to laziness but I know I need too!!! haha! Hopefully something more entertaining can help me stay focused!

Wow, you have some cool coworkers! I cannot imagine anyone in my office being down for that challenge!!

Try the blogilates videos, she keeps things interesting with random stories in the middle of the workout videos, haha!

I have to say strength training is the kind of cross training that is really out of my comfort zone. I think I feel the burn reading your post! That being said, I think I would benefit the most from more of it. I am trying to do more, but I admit, it is the first thing to go when I get busy!

I hear ya! I’ve always got time for a run, but I have to MAKE time for cross training. I think trying new strength training lifts or varying the weights you use could make it more interesting! I know usually the heavier I lift the more “interesting” things get! haha

I totally agree with you on not waiting until January 1! I’ve tried Cassey’s workouts before and I like them, but I tend to work out at the gym (when it comes to strength training) so I prefer something that’s easy for me to jot down and doesn’t require watching the whole video. (That’s really just me saying that she’s way too peppy for me, haha; I usually watch the Fitness Blender videos to make sure I’m doing the moves right before I jot down the workout.)

She is ridiculously peppy and the noises she makes sometimes… LOL. I was thinking if anyone just heard her voice they might think I’m watching an adult film! haha

I have clicked over to Fitness Blender from your blog before, but haven’t given any of the videos a try yet. I’ll have to add that to my to-do list!

Cassey’s videos has been some of my faves for years! 😀 I think she’s brilliant, but like you say; waaay too cheerful at times haha! Every time I start to struggle and she get’s all “are you feeling the burn, are you feeling the buuurrrrn?! my cat once burned down my house, that was a pretty fun day, cats are fun, come on now, just 5 more” I just want to kill her xD In one of her videos she says “squuuueeeeeze your buttcheeks together like you’re holding a penny” or something like that, first time I heard her say that I thought I was going to die hahaha xD Jillian Michaels has some good ones too, you can find them on youtube 🙂
I need to start working out more like this.. 🙂

YES! Cassey’s random stories in the middle crack me up!

I’ve done Jillian’s 30-day shred videos before and really like them!

  6. running schlub

Totally awesome. Strength training as a while is a new experience for me so the fact I’m even doing it is a new level lol.

Agree 100% with your comment about waiting until January. A lot of people make the old new years resolution “it will all change in January” speech…if it truly is a change to help yourself, why not do it now. I’m on board with making changes when needed.

Exactly! I used to be a total resolutioner and things never panned out long term because I was just giving myself an excuse and once Jan 1 came around I would have another excuse!

The best thing ever was one random day in June 2012 when I decided to start running!

  7. Megan @ Meg Go Run

I am starting to feel like I should actually DO my workout 4 times since I only ever went through it one time haha! I actually MIGHT do it today as it is a freezing rain outside!

Blogilates = me dying slowly. every. time. Seriously, on the ground, panting, dying. So cute.

Definitely trying to up my cross-training game lately! I really feel like it is helping me running and staying injury free.

  9. Hanna

I’m taking my cross training to a new level this year by actually DOING it! I struggle with this though, because like Cheryl, it’s the first thing to go when I get busy. I’m not awesome at time management to begin with, and when I already need to log 40 miles a week for marathon training it’s hard to fit in all this extra exercise. And, to be honest, it’s just hard to find the motivation to do it. I feel like I’m bombarded with all these strength, pilates, yoga, cross training, etc exercise routines and I just don’t even know where to begin.

So….I’m just taking baby steps. This will be my 2nd week in a row doing swimming as one of my workouts (although I think I need to combine it with spinning or something because it doesn’t feel like enough of a workout, and it’s hard to stay in the pool more than 30 mins), and I hope to continue with that. I’ve also started doing little things when I can: a plank and some bridges and some leg lifts or squats, which I’m going to try to make into a habit so I’m doing that almost every day. Start small, you know? All these big XT/strength routines are great but just make me feel overwhelmed. I’m already doing so much.

Hooray for more XT and stronger bodies in 2015!

I agree, it can be so overwhelming! I have a total advantage since Adam loves weightlifting; he built my lifting plan for me and of course lets me know when I’m being a baby and it’s time to move up in weights.

I’m glad I found the Blogilates schedule too. It’s nice that she just tells you what to do every day of the week so you don’t have to put too much of your own planning into it – just gotta carve out the time! Most of her videos are pretty short so it’s not too difficult!

  10. Kim

I did Brooke’s program in the fall – good stuff!!
I’ve done a few of the Blogilates videos – yep she is pretty cheerful but I kind of like it since it is always super early – makes me smile.

Yes! When I first watched her videos at night I was totally annoyed, but I actually do the videos in the morning and I appreciate her upbeat personality early in the day! Most mornings, anyway ;).

  11. Lizzy

Yup, definitely been trying to improve the cross training.

I used to follow Cassie’s videos and still use them from time to time, but sometimes I just can’t handle her peppiness. I liked the workouts though, they are no joke!

  12. LeAnne

I need to up my cross training game toooooooo!!!!!!!!! I never thought about breaking up the wall sit into different reps…does that work better than doing it for 2 minutes straight?

Hey LeAnne! Brooke said she likes 4 x 30 seconds better than 2 minutes straight because it teaches your legs to recover quicker!

  13. Lou @ Running Through China

Ni hao!! Hope your sniffles piss off soon. Ain’t nobody got time for that, hey! Loving your work Kristina – new cross-training workouts (mixing it up frequently) are both motivating AND heaps effective for our bodies (if the ache a couple of days later is anything to go by after a newly tried workout). I tried Meg’s workout too as you know, and it nearly killed me! Other online workouts I like are from Hasfit.com, as you pick and choose from heaps of workouts – from 10 minutes or less up to an hour or so. 🙂

    1. Kristina @ Blog About Running

Thanks Lou! I’ve never heard of Hasfit.com before, checking it out now!!

  14. Jennifer

Hojour or Bonla? Haha ok that was dorky! I’ve never done the Blogilates video – your description was funny, she looks very happy! Since I’ve started doing a little more yoga I notice I sweat sooo much during those classes (even when its not hot yoga). Def giving my body a workout!

      Bonla! 😉

I’ve started doing a little bit of Yoga too using online videos. It is truly so much harder than I thought it would be!

I saw on Facebook that Classpass is coming to Miami soon, I hope it also comes to Fort lauderdale because I really want to try it!

  15. Karen

You are on a roll!! Great job on going out of your comfort zone. I am thinking i will be down to one weight lifting session a week ( maybe a short second one) while trying to marathon train. I am not sure I can keep up with everything and I want to give this marathon try my best. I can’t stop hitting the snooze button, it’s a habit 🙂 I do think it’s really great to mix it up!! I gave a lot more time to strength training the past several months, but time to switch it up now. I think everything has a season and when it gets to hot for me to handle again i will start really upping the cross training. I think the temp is going to rule my life lol

When I was in marathon training I only did one strength training day per week as well. I think if you can do more it will only benefit you, but I just couldn’t (didn’t) make the time for it.

You have had some seriously amazing gains for your strength training over the last few months!!! Your arms look amazing!

  16. Ali @ Hit the Ground Running

At-home videos are my go-to for cross training but I think I may join a gym again soon. I need some real weights back in my life! I can’t wait to try Meg’s video.
