Weekend Highlights!

Can we start off today with a moment of honesty? Every time I edit a vlog it’s a journey in self acceptance. Having to pay close attention to myself – voice, face, body – can be overwhelming for anyone, especially someone who has struggled with an eating disorder.

Editing my weekend vlog was definitely this way. The skin on my face has been acting up recently so I went makeup-less in an attempt to let it breathe a little. I almost didn’t post this vlog because I just felt bleh. Anyway, I decided to hit publish on this vlog because, hey, this is me!

ANYWAY, remember on Friday when I told you I was excited for a night in to myself because Adam was going to a wrestling show with a friend? His friend cancelled at the last minute and I ended up being his backup.

Just when I had wrapped my mind around the change in plans (I don’t do well with schedule changes!) Adam decided he didn’t want to go to the wrestling show at all. He was tired from having gotten up early to play racquetball with his dad, and he was sore from having squatted ALL THE WEIGHTS … so instead we stayed in and watched the Heat beat the Cavs, skyrocketing us to #1 place in the eastern conference!

I missed my rom-com, but I’ll always happily skip a movie to watch a good sports game with Adam! All in all it turned out to be a great Saturday night!

Other highlights from the weekend:

1. My GU delivery arrived! A big box of Chocolate Outrage which is the only flavor of Gu that I can tolerate. I’m all set for the Cape Coral Half coming up this weekend! 😉

2. I went to Trader Joe’s for the first time. I now understand what the big deal is about – I love it! All of the Trader Joe’s brand of products are reasonably priced and different from what I’ve seen at other grocery stores. I’m obsessed with these Gone Bananas chocolate dipped banana slices!

3. Went to the Ravens vs. Dolphins game on Sunday … and WE WON! It was truly a boring game, but a win is a win! Be sure to tell all of your friends that the Dolphins are back on track to win the Superbowl this year. You heard it here first ;).

sdfsdf

4. Got in a confidence boosting 8 mile run/walk. My hip is still experiencing some extra tight tightness so I’m continuing to baby it with intervals. I was feeling really good on this run and was able to push the pace the last two miles without wearing myself out. With the Cape Coral half just a few days away now I feel very confident that I’ll do a lot better than I did at the Fort Laud. Half last month.

^ I think mile 5 was a little slower because that was the mile that I was fumbling around with my Gu.

It was good to cap off the week with what feels like a strong run because I really slacked earlier in the week. We had SO MUCH RAIN this week and that really put a damper on my running after work. I’m not proud of how low my mileage was, but there is nothing I can do about it now except have a better week this week.

A1A Half Marathon Training Week 2:

Monday: Strength training
Tuesday: 2.08 miles run/walk @ 14:27 | 80*F
Wednesday: Rest
Thursday: Rest
Friday: Rest
Saturday: 30 minutes (~2.1 mi) run/walk on treadmill
Sunday: 8 miles run/walk @ 14:21 | 80*F, slightly windy, hip tight

Total: 12 miles @ 14:36

The previous week I did 19 miles @ 13:57 so this wasn’t a great week overall, but my long run was better than last week’s long run and that’s a plus!

How was your weekend?

If you shop at Trader Joe’s, what’s your #1 suggestion for something I should try?

Glad you liked TJs! I felt the same way as you- unsure what the hype was all about. Now it’s our go-to store even though its a little bit out of the way!

LOVE it! The only issue is that the milk is so expensive! Adam goes through like three gallons a week!

  2. Megan @ Meg Go Run

And see I had the complete OPPOSITE experience at Trader Joe’s. I really wanted to like it, but I didn’t. I think Aldi is so much better. INTERESTING info though, Aldi and Trader Joe’s are owned by the same family! I am glad you decided to post your vlog because I love them so much.

We don’t have an Aldi’s so I can’t compare it 🙁 We normally do our shopping at Publix and fill it in with things from Fresh Market or Whole Foods. I’m totally ditching Fresh and WF for Trader Joe’s now though!

I’m glad you like the vlogs! I like recording them, I just don’t like watching them back! haha

I sometimes post mine without watching because I can’t take it!

Hey Kristina – you may want to know that we do have an Aldi – it’s on Commercial blvd just west of US-1. A bit out of the way if you live in downtown (like I do) but I make it there every 2 weeks or so. I always buy oats there, as well as avocados (always under $1 each) and their bacon is great too. It looks like a European store and it’s much less crowded than TJ’s but the service is cold unlike Publix. Can’t have it all in one. ?

So happy Miami won this weekend. YAY. Keep up the great work and can’t wait to hear about the race from all my buddies!!

    1. Kristina

Thanks Susan! I’m really happy we won too, we needed it. So far this season we’ve fired our head coach, offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator. My expectations for the rest of the season are pretty low so when we can pull out a win it feels good! 😀

Mojito Salmon at Trader Joes is a great meal! Glad you had a good run! I am glad someone had a good game this weekend :/

Oh man, I feel bad for you Patriot fans … but not too bad 😉 Once your receivers and Gronk get healthy you’ll be back on a roll!

  5. Karen

I am going to watch your Vlog and I hope I don’t get interrupted! Sometimes it takes several tries lol
I am not a TJ’s gal, too far from my house.
If the intervals help the hip keep at it! it is still sop darn hot here, the short breaks must feel awesome 🙂

It really does! I don’t think we’re going to get any cold days this year 🙁

I love TJ’s! I always buy cranberry coconut granola. This time of year I like to get the wintry blend coffee and the chocolate covered JoJos. Our dog loves the dog treats and my cat used to like the cat treats. I love the 10 minute barley for a quick weeknight meal base (we add sautéed veggies and a protein on top and make a bowl out of it). I love their nuts and trail mixes too. The Tempting trail mix is my favorite for a little indulgent snack.

Thank you for all of the great recommendations!

  7. Courtney @ Running For Cupcakes

I think your skin looks great in your vlog! You have nothing to be worried about 🙂 I LOVE Trader Joe’s. Cookie Butter is a must try if you haven’t already. I also love the cowboy/cowgirl bark and the sweet potato gnocchi!

You are too kind, thanks Courtney 😀

      Sweet potato gnocchi sounds INCREDIBLE!

  8. Running schlub

Way to post the vlog and be done with it. I actually talk to Mrs Schlub about that all the time, I only post pictures of myself if she is with me but I like your phrase, self acceptance. Need to step being so negative and just enjoy everything that comes with running 🙂

Haven’t tried chcolate outrage, usually stick to the fruity flavors. Not a big chocolate fan. Make sure to keep practicing taking your gels during the race. I still mess that up lol.

Did you follow sage this weekend?? He missed his OTQ by a minute and a half. So bummed for him but he gave it one heck of a try.

      Thank you!

I did follow Sage, of course. I feel so bad for him, but am honestly SO SO SO impressed that he can still run so fast in a marathon when he spends the majority of his time training for ultras. Absolutely incredible athlete!

  9. Ali @ Hit the Ground Running

I love Chocolate Outrage! It’s so good, especially when it’s a little cold. I like to eat it before my run because it hasn’t melted from my body heat yet and it’s like eating fudge!

True story: I don’t really like Trader Joe’s. I think it’s overrated and I rarely find things I like there for the cheap prices people claim they see.

Nice job on your run!! I can’t wait to see you this weekend!!

  10. Jessie @ The Acquired Sass

Mmmm. I love TJ’s Cookie Butter & their Cookie Butter Sandwiches.

And they have a tasty bagged salad mix of broccoli slaw & kale, and then all the toppings & dressing in a little pouch.
It’s super tasty. But I can eat the whole thing myself in one sitting.

Pro tip : If you’re in store, & want to try something, just take it to an associate, they’ll open anything within reason & let you try.

OMG – I love the Gone Bananas 🙂 No wonder we are friends. Hmmm Cookie Butter Ice Cream is SOO good. I am also loving the blueberry goat cheese.
