Weekend Snaps: Running, Cats, Fire

Shall we sum up Monday in one word? Nope, I don’t use that kind of language here on the blog.

Instead of thinking about how far we have to go until Friday, let’s rewind to the good times.

Saturday I woke up disgustingly late and it felt amazing. I have zero regrets about sleeping in, except to say that I think my whole “become a morning runner” is becoming something of a running joke. (Get it? Hah.)

I’m cat sitting Georgie while my mom is on vacation, so once I pulled myself out of bed I went over to feed him a very late breakfast. He’s used to my mom being home with him all the time, so I don’t think he even minded that I was late, he was just glad to see a human!

As soon as I got home from playing with that fluffy little guy I geared up for a run at the beach. It was such a pretty day out and I was anxious to get in my long run.

One of my former coaches reached out to me after reading my spring training post. She advised me to keep my long runs to 8-10 miles instead of 10-13 miles since I have no real race on the horizon. Instead of focusing on running 10+ every weekend she said I should do one hard effort and one moderate effort speed workout. Combined with an 8-10 miler every weekend I should still get back to my former paces without risking burn out right before I start marathon training. That sounds like a good plan to me!

In addition to modifying my training plan to include two speed workouts, she also advised that I start lifting heavier again. I admitted that I’m only squatting 50lbs right now, and for me that’s just not a lot. I don’t even feel sore afterwards… so I’m going to work my way back up to at least 100lb squats, which won’t take me long.

Sunday was a light cross training day before heading out to celebrate my friend Aislinn’s bday.

Spent a little bit of time with the elliptical while listening to some guy grunt really loudly by the weights.

For Aislinn’s birthday we went to a place called Mai Kai. It’s a polynesian dinner show theater with some really fun sets. The food was good but the best part was definitely the guys who danced with fire!

The show was great but we didn’t get home until after 10pm which is quite late for a Sunday! ZzZZzzzzz 🙂 I’m going to need a nap….

Before I go today I just have to give a SHOUTOUT to one of my favorite people in the run blog community, Helly. After having to take some time off due to injury she has come back swinging for the fences! In the last couple of weeks she’s set multiple PRs and even earned first place overall at the 5K she ran over the weekend.

If you don’t already know Helly, please visit her blog and follow her on Instagram today! You won’t regret it. Aside from being an amazing runner she’s also so so so nice.

How was your weekend? More specifically, how did your running go this weekend? 🙂
Tell me about your last PR race. I love hearing about PRs, it never gets old!

My weekend was perfect. I spent Saturday with my best friend who is pregnant with her first child so we gushed about baby stuff. I still somehow managed to get in my long run later that night even though it was cold and snowing and I was positive that I wouldn’t make it past 4 miles. Sunday I did all the boring stuff like grocery shopping and meal prepping. And made brownies, yum!

That Polynesian place looks like a lot of fun, but 10 pm is way past my bedtime on a Sunday. I hope the coffee gets you through the day 🙂

That sounds like such a great weekend!

PS: I LOVE YOUR NEW BLOG! What a perfect URL and cute design too! 🙂

oh my goodness the pictures of cecil and georgie <3 my weekend was great; we went on a short trip to visit my boyfriend's mom. unfortunately, i was banking on the fact that she has a treadmill to keep up with training, but then a pipe burst in her basement, and now the treadmill is donezo. so, no runs for me this past weekend because of snow outside. chicago weather is weird though, because today it's 55 and sunny. no excuses today!

      They are too cute, right?

Oh no, that really stinks about the pipe bursting. I hope the treadmill (and everything else) didn’t get ruined!

That weather sounds so so so so nice. It’s heating up really quickly here. We’re going to be in the mid 80s by the end of the week, eek!

That Polynesian dinner show sounds fun – I don’t think we have anything here like it. This past weekend was ALOT of House of Cards (finished), running and blogging 🙂 So impressed with Helly’s PR streak! Last PR I had was March of last year. It will probably be some time before my next PR, but that is okay…all a work in progress 🙂

My coworkers are all talking about House of Cards right now. I really need to get on the train and start watching it!

My last PR was so long ago too. We’ll get there soon enough 🙂

That Polynesian place looks like fun! I was looking forward to eating that kind of food when we were planning a Hawaii trip. Ah, someday!

That’s nice that your ex coach reached out to give you some advice!

Dang girl you can SQUAT!!!! Even when my knee was “good” I don’t think I ever squatted 50lb!

I know! I was like “hmmm so this is a FREE consultation right?” 😀 I’m looking forward to working with a coach again for marathon training, but I just can’t justify the price now when I’m not really training-training, even though I’m definitely training haha.

I think squatting is my superhero power!

  5. March 7, 2016 / 11:44 am

I have went to a Polynesian dinner show before…so. much. fun! Kudos to your old coach reaching out with some advice. It helps to have someone you trust and have trained with before give some insight!

Definitely! It’s so helpful to get professional advice from someone who knows me and what my body can handle and should be doing!

“Shall we sum up Monday in one word? Nope, I don’t use that kind of language here on the blog.”

I don’t know why, but this made me laugh so hard when I read it this morning. And again when I read it right now. Hahaha. 🙂

  7. March 7, 2016 / 6:34 pm

Running sucked this weekend but I made up for it this morning 😉
    BTW…that first line of your post….priceless!!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

  8. March 7, 2016 / 7:01 pm

Sorry that the morning running isn’t going to well:/ I feel like I can’t run in the evening, so we all just have our times that work for us! Your modified spring training plan sounds great- can’t wait to see how it goes for you!

  9. March 7, 2016 / 8:02 pm

So, when you wake up late on a Saturday and then do a long run, how hot out is it? I’m really impressed that you run long in the sun. I have to get up early to my long run in.

Our off-season training is going to be really similar if you’re doing two speed sessions and one 8-10 miler a week, too! It’s like we’re virtually training together!

Saturday wasn’t too bad, only 75*F which is why I thought it was okay to go!

It also wasn’t like the middle-middle of the afternoon either. It was more like 4pm 😉

Most of the time I need to go early morning or late evening to avoid the sun too! The worst is when the sun is directly overhead, I avoid that at all costs. Late afternoon can be okay because the buildings block the sun from directly hitting the skin which is the most important thing for me. Once my skin heats up from direct sunlight, I’m toast!
